Do you have a SD slot? If not you get a USB to SD memory card adpater at the computer/office/online store and use that.
It appears as a drive on your machine and you can use Export from iPhoto or drag and drop methods too.
    Make sure you backup

how do I export pictures from iphoto to a sd card?

Exporting from iPhoto to the SD card is preferable. Dragging to the card will only write the lower quality  preview files and not the high resolution originals.
Export to a folder on the Desktop and then drag the folder to the card. If the file system on the SD Card is not MacOS Extended (Joournaled), you'll avoid a problem with the limit of files, that can be stored on the top level of the card by collecting all files in a folder.
Actually I found the opposite was true.
As you can see in the following picture, the dragged photo, which is the one named IMG_2268.JPG  retained more metadata and had a larger file size than the one I exported which was reduced in file size, and lost a bit of the meta data in the export.   Including the creation date, and the latitude and longitude.
I think Dragging is the better option.

  • How do I transfer pictures from iPhoto to an iPhone 5 without using iTunes?

Hey there. I have version 10.5.8 on my macbook, but an iPhone 5, which basically means I can't open my iPhone in iTunes. However I would like to transfer some photos from iPhoto onto my phone. Does anyone know how this is possible? Thanks so much!

That will work, if your Mac is supported, not all Macs with Yosemite will support Air Drop to the iPhone:
AirDrop between OS X and iOS is supported by the following Mac models:  (From the Mac Help)
    MacBook Air (2012 or later)
    MacBook Pro (2012 or later)
    iMac (2012 or later)
    Mac mini (2012 or later)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)
AirDrop to iOS devices requires iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 7 and the Lightning connector.AirDrop between two Mac computers is supported by the following Mac models:
MacBook Pro (late 2008 or later)*
MacBook Air (late 2010 or later)
    MacBook (late 2008 or later)*
    iMac (early 2009 or later)
Mac mini (mid 2010 or later)
Mac Pro (early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or mid 2010 or later)
    * The MacBook Pro (17-inch, late 2008) and the white MacBook (late 2008) do not support AirDrop.

How do I transfer pictures from my iphoto to an external harddrive to free up space?

To get photos off of your Mac the solution is to run your iPhoto library (and probably iTunes library) on an external drive. The drive must be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled). Quit iPhoto and drag your iPhoto libeprary to a properly formatted external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library window to select the new location. Fully test it and then delete the one on the internal drive. Test one more time before emptying the trash. Verify that your back up software is backing up the external drive.
