How do I transfer purchased item to my library.  I have an iPad 2.

I want to upgrade my iPad 2 to OS 5, but I keep getting the folowing message:  "There are purchased item on the iPad "xxxxxxx" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library.  You should transfer these item to your iTunes library before updating this iPad.  Are you sure you want to continue.
Also, how do I know which of my purchases have not been transferred?
My computer is a PC running windows 7.  My computer-ese is one step above a know-nothing.
