How do I turn off screen saver whilst running time machine backup?

My hard drive failed today when my MacBook Pro took a tumble from the sofa.
I have replaced it and am trying to restore from a time machine backup.
I have to use the snow leopard installation disc that came with the machine, once I get into disk utility I can format the new drive and select restore from time machine backup.
This all runs great until the screen saver kicks in, normally around 1% into the restore. This crashes the restore and gives me the grey screen of death, it's done it four times now.
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver? Or will I need to install snow leopard first and then software update and then restore from backup once I can turn off the screen saver in system properties.
I paid a lot of money for the time capsule and having these issues the first time I truly need it is disconcerting.

Hi Mewnor,
Is there anyway to disable the screensaver?
This might help you if your computer is running Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8.3). I can not help you if your computer is running Snow Leopard.

    Turn off screen curtain
If VoiceOver is on and the screen is black, but you can still use the device by pressing volume up and volume down, you may have screen curtain on.
Try triple-tapping using three fingers on the device display to turn off screen curtain.

how do i import an iPhoto library from a time machine backup? I did a back up and i formatted my machine. How do i get iphoto to be the same?

This screenshot shows how to restore a library from Time Machine.
There is NO importing necessary.  One should never import one library into another.  Just restore it to your Pictures folder and launch iPhoto.

  • How do I restore a system from an older time machine backup?

How can I restore my full system from a time machine backup using a "snapshot in time" older than the most recent time machine backup?
For context: I am doing work on my machine that required making a full backup (in time machine), working on the computer, then doing a full restore. Unfortunately, when I briefly connected the my external disk during step 2, time machine started and added a "newer" backup than the one I need to restore. Any advice?
    Thanks!

how do i retrieve photos from iphoto on a time machine backup?

To restore the entire library do the following:
For a single photo you need to  know the file name?  If so you can extract photos one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto.  You would do it as follows:
1 - download and launch  Find Any File.
2 - select the Time Machine external hard drive.
3 - enter the file name and search. It will take longer than a normal search due to the nature of the Time Machine structure, maybe up to 1 miinute.
4 - select the file that is in the Masters or Originals folder in the search results window and drag to the Desktop where it can be imported into iPhoto:

  • Turn off screen while OS runs

    Hello
Is there a way to turn off the screen of a Toshiba L300 19J while the system runs (plays music for example) ...?
    Thank you.

But it can be programatically. Not only by OS... I thought Toshiba had an utility software for this.
    Monitor power can be controlled:
    SendMessage(ValidHWND, WM_SYSCOMMAND, SC_MONITORPOWER, MONITOR_STATE);
Maybe I'll write a small app for this...
Would be nice if Flash Cards could do this by default...
Also i found an app specially for this porpouse: http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/07/20/how-to-manually-turn-off-notebook-or-laptop-lcd-screen/

  • How to transfer a single Application from an old Time Machine backup

    Hi
My old G5 unexpectedly died so i picked up a new iMac. When I set it up I used migration assistant to transfer everything but was told by a Genius not to "check" applications as I would need to re-install any apps that used a key anyway and there may be issues with snow leopard.
Turns out the new machine didn't have Snow Leopard after all and the one key application that I forgot to account for was my Palm Desktop. This of course has all of my addresses etc. and was far more up to date then the handheld which I haven't used in a couple years.
Is there any way to selectively retrieve this application from the Time machine backup for my old G5? I would even be happy if I could just get the data but I have no idea where to even look for it.
    Thoughts?
Thanks to any caring sole who thinks they can help
    SDK

This is what I would do, if you absolutely had to run the old Palm Desktop app on your new iMac.
The last version of Palm Desktop appears to still be available from palm.com
    http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/33219_en.html
Note: This is probably an old PowerPC application, so your Intel iMac will be using Rosetta to run it. That is fine, but a window letting you know may pop up if it is the first PowerPC app you have run.
Hopefully, the installer and application will work properly on a new Mac with Leopard or Snow Leopard.
When it sets up the new user, it should create a folder in your user home folder somewhere. I do not know where this will be, but I would look in places like
    <user home folder>/Library/
    <user home folder>/Library/Application Support/
    <user home folder>/Documents/
for a folder with Palm in the name.
If you can find that folder, note where it is located. Connect the Time Machine backup drive from the G5. In Finder, go into the backup folder to the latest date/time folder. You should be able to navigate to that same location and find that same +Palm data+ folder. First, just copy it over to the iMac's Desktop. Once you have it on the iMac, the idea here (with Palm Desktop NOT running) is to replace the new folder it created with the one from the old iMac. When you run Palm Desktop, hopefully, it will use your old data from the iMac G5.
I have not done this myself for Palm Desktop, but this technique works in other similar situations.

  • How to find Mailboxes under OS Lion 10.7 Time Machine backup.5 ?

I am trying to access, from a MacBook, to my MacBook Pro Mailboxes inside a Time Machine backup done under Lion 10.7.5. (the MBP is out of order and I would to check my Mailboxes).
If I open the backup, I do not find any /User Name/ Library (like inside the MacBook (OS X 10. 5.8)
I tried a search by 'Mailboxes' without any result.
Where/how could I find that Mailboxes file ?

No, you can't use a 10.7 altered TM drive to restore Snow Kitty with.
I've written a detailed method to restore 10.6 from 10.7, including advanced preparation before you remove 10.7's icy grip of death on your precious.

  • Grey Screen when restoring from Time Machine Backup

I was having some issues with my Macbook (circa 2008, aluminum) so I thought restoring from a Time Machine backup might solve the problem. The restore goes fine, always, but unfortunately, now whenever I start it up, it goes straight to the Gray Screen and goes no further. When checking the error logs, I see somewhere around 60% (I'm guessing, based on the time) the error:
bookmark failed to issue extension for item /com.apple.recovery.boot/BaseSystem.dmg
And a few other errors. Is there something I should be doing to fix this? Someone recommended reinstalling Lion, but as I have no wireless internet at home (only a plug-in USB 3G thing) it can't verify the installation.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • How do i reformat imac hard drive and restore time machine backup?

How do I reformat my iMac internal hard drive and restore from a Time Machine backup?
I have an iMac 20" Mid 2007 with a problematic hard drive.
IntelCore 2 Duo, Processor speed 2 Ghz
    800 Mhz Bus speed
    4 GB RAM
250 GB Western Digital Hard Drive
    10.6.3
Was getting a question mark upon booting up, so I booted from a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard CD and ran disk utility. Repair disk was interrupted with an error message. 'Disk utility can't repair disk. Backup files, reformat disk and restore backed up files.'
    1. Should I select Erase, Mac OS Extended Journaled, Erase?
    2. If I do this, won't I lose my networkability, and therefore lose access to Time Machine backups?
    3. If it were you, would you go ahead and replace the hard drive? Not sure I should trust this hard drive!
    4. If I need to replace the hard drive, can you send instructions?
    Thanks!

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
If you have your Time Machine backup drive connected, then you can use Setup Assistant to migrate your Home folder, application support files, and third-party applications and system preference files. I recommend doing this via the Setup Assistant when the option appears.

  • How to turn off screen saver?

Why does my ipone go blank after i dial a number?  Is there a screen saver option?

You mean when you hold it up to your face to talk? It's supposed to do that so you don't press buttons with your cheek... If you are on speakerphone or headphones, the screen will dim, then blank after a short time to save battery.

  • Turn off screen saver when unit is charging

    Okay
I am in the car and I have my Iphone on charge, and I am using Maps.
How do I stop the phone going into power save mode (screen darkens then screen saver) without permanently disabling the power saver option?

No, that's the only way to do it unless the app you're using has a feature in preferences to prevent the phone from sleeping while the app is in use.

  • How do I turn off automatic save? Or How do I revert to an earlier version of my file?

I just installed Lion. I use numbers, and I wish to revert to an earlier saved version of my numbers file, as I lost data (blank sheet this morning) last night. I did not close the file overnight, but did this morning in an effort to open an earlier version of the file. How do I open an earlier version of my numbers file? Can I do this only if I make continual "running" backups of the file, or is there a way that Lion saves an earlier version a la Time Machine. Thanks much. Vince

  • Turn off screen while apps run Need help

I'm running the SiriusXM app to stream music but I don't want the screen to keep after I choose my station. Does anyone know of a way to blank the screen? Is there a setting so when there is no touch activity it goes blank?
Also If you switch tabs it won't keep running the music in the background?  I have a choice tunes or surf but not both?
    Thanks
I'm here you wish you were too

You should be able to just tap the power button to turn off the screen.  The app should keep running just fine.
If it doesn't, that's a problem with the app.  I also have a music app in the Android Market and it is possible for the programmer to grab what are called "sleep locks" to enable the screen to be turned off without losing required resources like WiFi and the CPU.  My app lets the screen dim, but not go off... however, the user can turn the screen off and the app keeps working.
