How do i turn off smart address bar

I do not want the address bar to generate a google search. I want to navigate to the address I type in. Firefox just updated to 17.0.1 . Tonight I typed in the web address of Project Guttenberg and endup on a google search page. This is no acceptable. If i typed the address incorrectly an error message would be my preference

Thanks to Corel and AliceWyman. That little tweak in the config settings was what I was seeking.

You seem to have found the right setting. From my notes:
Add the following line to $ORACLE_HOME/search/webapp/config/search.properties and then restart oc4j:
    ses.qapp.similar_doc_handling=disabled
Maybe you didn't restart oc4j (using "searchctl restart")?

    Hi,
    Downgrade rights
    Quoting the Microsoft website:
If you do have downgrade rights and decide to use them, you continue to keep the license and rights of use for your original version and may "upgrade" back at any time.

    My suggestion:
You can backup all of your important data to a external drive and make a clean installation to Windows 7.

  • [solved] How do I turn off SMART warnings in Gnome?

I run the smartd daemon for the 8 hard drives in my server. One drive has about 90 bad sectors so it will most likely fail soon. But I can't return it unless it hits 100. Anyway, in Gnome, I keep getting warnings in that notification section in the bottom that the drive is failing and it's annoying me to no end. How can I turn off these warnings? Smartd mails me every detail anyway, I really don't need these constant warnings in my desktop environment as well.

I'm not entirely sure if i got your setup right, but you could try to disable parts of the gnome-settings-daemon via dconf. Have a look at org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins, especially at "householding". Either try a higher value for "min-notify-period":
Specify a time in minutes. Subsequent warnings for a volume will not appear more often than this period.
Or uncheck "active" for a more radical solution.

  • How do I turn off "Smart Cut and paste" in InDesign?

    Hi,
A programmer told me, that ID has a function called "smart cut and paste":
smart cut and paste boolean -- If true, automatically adjusts spacing among words and between words and punctuation marks when cutting and pasting text.
    http://www.mugginsoft.com/html/kosmictask/ASDictionaryDocs/Adobe/InDesign/OS-X-10.7/InDesi gn-CS5/html/html/FULL/classes/text_editing_preference.html
Unfortunately, it shows some weird text exchange behaviour when copying and pasting text.
My web and my forum search showed no results.
So: How can it be turned off?
    Thanks for your help!
    Mathais

    Thank you very much!
In the German version of InDesign's GUI it is called "Beim Ausschneiden und Einfügen von Wörtern Abstand automatisch anpassen".

  • How do I turn off the tab bar in FF 24 when only one window is open?

I have just updated to FF 24.0 from FF 20 with Tab Mix Plus already installed. (OSX 10.6.8) From the Firefox Preferences menu, Tabs box, I have set the "Hide the tab bar:" option to "When I have only one tab." I have also gone to the Tab Mix Plus option box and set the drop down to the same value. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the desired effect. Firefox opens to my home page with a tab at the bottom. (I prefer the tabs at the bottom and that setting still works.) With only one page open, that tab is completely unnecessary, takes up space, and just plain bugs me.
Now, here's what I have found. Once I've started Firefox, if I go to the Tab Mix Plus options box and select "Hide the tab bar: Always" and then set the option back to "When I have only one tab" I can enjoy one page without the tab bar, that is, until I've opened several tabs and then closed all but one. Then I see the tab bar stubbornly remain. An incompatibility between FF and Tab Mix Plus, perhaps. Is FF 24 not letting Tab Mix see the number of open tabs? Dunno. But I can't seem to solve it.

Are you saying that the problem lies not with Firefox but with Tab Mix Plus? Tab Mix worked up through FF 20 to my knowlege. And I see from other questions that the persistant tab bar was an issue with FF 23 as well.
Please note, that setting aside the extension issue, the Firefox preference Tab option should turn off the tab option when there is only one window open without any help from addons or extensions. I have disabled Tab Mix Plus, and set the FF option correctly, but the problem remains. As I see it, FF is not working as this user expects it to and is (slightly) broken.

  • How do I turn off the advertising bar on the right of the screen?

Everytime I start Firefox there is a very annoying bar on the right that contains advertising. I want to turn this feature off. How do I do it? I've searched the help menu but can't get an answer.

That is not a built-in feature of Firefox. First check to see if an add-on is causing this, to do that follow the procedure in the [[troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article.
Also check to see if that bar is part of a site that is stored as a home page, if it is you can change the home page, for details see [[how to set the home page]].
I am not aware of any malware that behaves like this, but to be safe try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:

How do you turn off the extremely annoying smart mail account selection?

On the iCloud website, set up three Rules (click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose Rules) to move all messages addressed to [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected] to the Trash. It will be deleted from there after 30 days.
You can't set up an automatic bounce, but in any case please, never bounce spam. Most spam has forged 'From' addresses so all you are doing is sending yet more spam to totally innocent people (who are probably already getting a lot of bounces because of this) and making a bad situation worse. Even if the 'From' address is genuine, I very much doubt any spammer is going to remove your address from a huge list  (they certainly would get a lot of bounces from actually dead addresses) - and in any case they can probably tell it's not a genuine bounce easily enough, so now you've just confirmed that your address works. Don't bounce it - just delete and forget.

  • In Safari 5.0.6 how do I turn off the auto save to contact list of addresses I send mail to?t

How do I turn off the auto saving to my contact list of every e-mail address I send a note to?

It might help knowing that Apple uses the term "Versions" instead of AutoSave. I have not yet found how to turn it off, but in the meantime, here's how to delete "Previous Versions":
    Do one of the following:
If you have unsaved changes in a document, choose File > Revert To, and then click Previous Save.
Hold the pointer to the right of the document title, click the downward-facing arrow, and then choose Browse All Versions from the pop-up menu.
Click a gray tick mark along the timeline on the right to display various versions of your document.
    Do one of the following:
To restore your document to the state of a particular version, display that version, and then click Restore.
To delete the displayed older version, hold the pointer to the right of its title, click the downward-facing arrow, and then choose Delete This Version. To delete all older versions, press the Option key while holding the pointer to the right of the older version’s title, click the arrow, and then choose Delete Old Versions.
To create a new untitled document that duplicates a particular version, display the version, press the Option key, and then click “Restore a Copy.”
To leave your document in its current state, click Done.

  • How to Turn off Smart Quotes

I am unable to turn off “smart quotes” (for the purpose of entering computer code). I have unchecked the box in System Preferences > Language > Keyboard, and in Safari and Mail under the Edit Menu > Substitutions (also in Word and TextEdit), but the smart or ”curly quotes“ continue to appear in each application. Is there any way to fix this in Mavericks? I am running OS X 10.9.3

TL;DR: AFAIK, nobody tries to use Microsoft Word for programming in Python, or programming in general, and TextEdit is dicy here at best.

That's my problem: no matter how I set the preferences in the applications, the smart quotes won't go away.
There is clearly an issue with smart quotes in your configuration.  The global smart quotes setting is not being honored, nor is any local setting that might exist.
Which particular application are you using to edit your Python code when this problem arises?
(As with programming in general, details matter here.)
Did the tools you are using also get restarted after the global settings were changed?
Why ask this stuff?  This information will allow folks to see if there's something else going on within that particular application, and it's also because there are text tools around that just won't create text files that the Python interpreter can process — whatever you're using here is probably closer to creating a plain-text file than some, as you're noticing the smart quotes here, though.  Of what you've mentioned so far, Microsoft Word is not known for its ability to create ASCII or UTF-8 text files, and TextEdit is dicy here at best as that tool is quite fond of using RTF formats.
But if it's Word or TextEdit you're using?  That won't work at all well.   TextWrangler (free) is a common choice for folks that prefer a GUI editor, or MacVim (free) or whatever emacs is current (also free) or other such if you'd prefer a more advanced editor.  (Note: vim and emacs are much more cryptic, and much more powerful editors.)  Or use the included nano editor (has an on-screen list of commands), or the integrated vim or emacs editors at the command line.   There are also Python IDE packages around, as well.  (Xcode doesn't support Python, though there are reports of some success with it.)  These tools all work, and these tools all produce the sorts of sequential text files that the compilers and interpreters can process.   In some cases, these tools also provide syntax highlighting and other features, which can be very useful when coding, too.

  • How do you turn off the suggestions form the google search bar?

How do you turn off the suggestions form the google search bar? the drop down boxes are really starting to annoy me!

You can't turn off the suggestions in Safari, though you may be able to do that if you install Glims, which also offers some additional options that aren't available directly in Safari.
Quit Safari before you install it, then restart and go to Preferences>Glims to setup your options.
As for drop-down boxes, what exactly are you referring to?
