How do I type my own screen saver?

Seems to me there used to be a way to just type in a phrase in screen saver settings and have it bounce around the screen as a screen saver. Is there still a way to do this? Or does it require a third party app.?
Thank you

there is definitely nothing built in like this. i don't remember there being a screensaver like that either. there might of course be a 3rd party screensaver that does this.

    How can I get  my Iphotos to show as my screen saver please ?  all disappeared after upgrading ...I have done as suggested and deleted all relevant files , but now am only left with the "Squirly " screen saver option in the drop down menu and no option for Iphoto library.

    Slow, intermittent.  Sometimes bootable sometime not. Odd behavior.
    Sounds to me like a classic case of your HD failing.
    Your SMART status may still show verified, with no errors on the Apple Hardware Test, Disk Utility shows no problems on Disk Repair-  this is of no help.
    I trust you have a good back-up and a bootable clone.

  • How can I turn off the screen saver on the iMac??

    I went to system Prefences - Sceen saver and wen to the Hot corner. Disabled all the hot corner and the sceen saver is still on ???
    What else can I do ??
    Thanks for your help.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power
    If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, you may need to click it to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
    Move the Display sleep slider to the right so that the display sleeps after the screen saver starts.

  • How can I over ride my screen saver passwords to access my iBook G4?

    Yesterday, I called Tech. support via Apple and was provide a case number for my issue.
    The e-mail that was sent to me did not assist me.
    Today, I am told that I would need to purchase a 30 day technical support plan for $50.  They would not be able to assist me unless I paid into this (frustrated).
    Does anyone know how I can hack into my own iBook G4 without unnecessary expenses?
    Any references and or support is greatly appreciated.
    Respectfully,
    David

    Hi, David. Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
    Which exact iBook model is it?
    You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
    Which version of the operating system is it running now? (Mac OS X 10.0 would not be possible on an iBook which was purchased new in 2004.)
    How much RAM is installed?
    What kind of optical drive does it have? (CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, Combo, or SuperDrive?)

    Hi BK,
    Ran Memtest.  (took about 1 hour)  the test found what appears to be over 30 errors in many different Hexidecimal labeled areas.
    I read the readme within the install, however, I have no idea how to report back to you the results of the test other than to say that it apeard to find errors.  The directions did say that at times, errors are normal.
    Another question for you.  Earlier you had directed me to go into the BIOS and "LOAD BIOS OPTIMISED DEFAULT"
    I cannot find this option... I can find an option for setting Defaults.  Do you think its the same thing?
    Do you see any issues with my other bios settings?
    "Another question for you.  Earlier you had directed me to go into the BIOS and "LOAD BIOS OPTIMISED DEFAULT"

    yes

    load bios defaults, and retest with memtest. looks like you got failure memory stick(s) or wrong configured. paste memory details as well, you have one or more memory sticks? if you got more than one test it individually one by one to find failure one and replace it.

  • How should I find my Screen Saver's preferences?

    I'm writing a screen saver that basically draws stuff the user types into a box. I have not completed it yet, because I have not been able to locate where the screen saver preferences are located. Here's the code that takes care of the preferences:
    //PrefControl.m
    //I wrote this on my brother's school computer. Go !:
    #import "PrefControl.h"
    //define what you have - not defined in header file because there is no need to access the predefined text in any other file:
    #define DISPLAYED_TEXT @"com.nodomain.Saver.DISPLAYED"
    @implementation PrefControl
    @synthesize displayed;
    -(id) init{
    self = [super init];
    if(self){
    //read user defaults
    NSUserDefaults* defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];
    displayed = [defaults stringForKey: DISPLAYED_TEXT];
    return self;
    -(void) writePrefs{
    //write preferences the way the UserDefaults guide says to:
    NSUserDefaults* defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];
    NSMutableDictionary* defs = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithCapacity:1];
    [defs setObject:displayed forKey:DISPLAYED_TEXT];
    [defaults registerDefaults:defs];
    -(void) dealloc{
    [self writePrefs];
    [super dealloc];
    +(void) initialize{
    //set up user defaults for the first time:
    NSUserDefaults* defaults = [NSUserDefaults standardUserDefaults];
    NSMutableDictionary* defs = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithCapacity:1];
    [defs setObject:@"Hello, World!" forKey:DISPLAYED_TEXT];
    [defaults registerDefaults:defs];
    +(PrefControl*) prefs{
    return [[[PrefControl alloc]init]autorelease];
    @end
    and its header:
    //PrefControl.h
    //I wrote this.
    #import <cocoa/cocoa.h>
    @interface PrefControl:NSObject{
    NSString* displayed;//the text my Screen Saver displays.
    @property(readonly, nonatomic) NSString* displayed;
    -(id) init;//sets up all the properties. done over time.
    -(void) writePrefs;//writes the defaults.
    -(void) dealloc;
    +(void) initialize;//sets up the defaults.
    +(PrefControl*) prefs;//makes and autoreleases a new PrefControl.
    @end
    Now on to my question: Where can I find my preferences file? Is it the System Preferences preferences PLIST or is it my own Screen Saver's PLIST? How can I change the file so I can test if it saves properly? I am going to edit it with the PLIST editor that came with XCode.
    I prefer to do the behind-the-scenes work before working on the major GUI if I can.

    I just did a little test and changed something in my Screen Saver settings and looked to see what changed (just had a Finder window open in my ~/Library/Preferences and had the "Date Modified" column selected so that the most recent change would appear at the top) and noticed that the file called com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file changed (the xxxx is a hex number that is part of your UUID, or perhaps the whole UUID, as have seen it both ways). This screensaver preferences file is located in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost which makes sense, as every user would need their own set of screen saver preferences on each host.
    Looking at this file in TextWrangler it looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>askForPassword</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>idleTime</key>
    <integer>300</integer>
    <key>lastNonRandomModuleName</key>
    <string>Flurry</string>
    <key>moduleName</key>
    <string>Flurry</string>
    <key>modulePath</key>
    <string>/System/Library/Screen Savers/Flurry.saver</string>
    <key>tokenRemovalAction</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Hope that helps.
    One thing I did have a question about is how to find the UUID. On a Mac Pro system the command:
    system_profiler | grep -i uuid
    returned the expected number that was part of the com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file, but this did not work on a MacBook Pro. No luck trying to find out why so far. Anyone have any ideas? There is also a UUID associated with a disk volume, that appears to have nothing to do with the UUID associated with the system. So the UUID I'm talking about here is for the system, not a disk.

  • Screen saver slide show keeps reverting to National Geographic photos?

    Hi all - quick question about a minor annoyance.  I have the screen saver set to display photos from one of my iPhoto photo sets using the built in screen saver options.  For no apparent reason, it occasionally decides to stop displaying my photos and instead starts displaying the National Geographic photos instead, which is one of the options in the screen saver setup.  I can go to settings and change it back to my photos but it always seems to eventually go back.  I can't find any rhyme, reason or pattern to this happening - if its something that I am doing, I've got no idea what it could be.
    Anyone have any idea how I might be accidentally causing this, or is this some sort of bug?  Any way to prevent it from happening?  Any help appreciated.  Not sure but I am pretty sure this did not happen before Yosemite.

    Another workaround is to delete the pictures in the National Geographic folder and add your picture there. Hard drive level Library/ScreenSavers.

  • Screen saver banner

    Does anyone know how to type in a screen saver banner so that when the computer is in this mode it shows the scrolling/flying/moving text across the screen?

    I've seen this asked before and the only solution I can come up with is to generate the scrolling text using an iMovie transition and then use xbMovieMaker to convert this to a screen saver. There are other screen savers that do text but not in the fashion you're after.

  • I have a brand new Mac Mini (July 2014) with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB hard drive and I typed in my screen saver password today and it froze up.  Had to push the power switch and restart the computer.  Why, and what can I do to prevent this?

    It shouldn't crash just because I type in my screen saver password.  But it did.  I had to push the power button to shut it down and turn it back on.

    Freezes happen occasionally. Hard to pinpoint a cause. I wouldn't let it worry you as they are rare. If this happens often then post back as there may be something wrong.

  • Screen Saver - can't use any iPhoto images

    I know that there have been reports of the mosaic screen saver with iPhoto not working, but I can't get any type of photo screen saver working with iPhoto. If I click on an iPhoto event, album or just iPhoto, I get the spinning ball for about 30 minutes before System Preferences crashes.
    Has anyone else seen this? I am using the latest version of iPhoto. All the photos in my iPhoto library are actually stored in an Aperture library.

    My guess is that ILMediaBrowser is referring to the iLife Media Browser. You might run Software Update and see if you somehow missed an update to it. However, if it worked with a new iPhoto Library I think the iLife Media Browser is probably OK, but there is something funky in the innards of your original iPhoto Library that is crashing the Media Browser.
    You could try holding the Command and Option keys down, then launch iPhoto from the Applications folder. Keep holding the keys until it asks you if you want to rebuild. There are list of items to be checked, click on the ones that sound likely to help matters.

  • IPhoto Screen Saver Disappeared

    I have iPhoto as my screen saver (the whole library, random order) and today suddenly it stared showing National Geographic photos.  I went into the Desktop & Screen Saver options, and iPhoto is not in the drop down list.  It _does_ appear in the Desktop options, but it does not appear in the Screen Saver.
    Anyone have any ideas how I can get my iPhoto screen saver back?  I searched these forums but can't find any reports of the same issue.

    Well, I broke down and upgraded to the latest version of iPhoto because I finally found a thread that said that this fixed it.  Sure enough, after I did that the "Photo Library" that Linc refers to re-appeared.  Apparently recently something happened with the previous version of iPhoto (I think I had '09) that took this out.  I  don't think I ran any software updates between when it was working and when it stopped working, and I'm not sure if upgrading to the new iPhoto actually was the issue or if upgrading caused something in the database to get repaired.  But the long and short of it is that upgrading did resolve the issue for me.
