How do I uncheck "Check spelling while typing" forever?

Hi, when writing in some applications such as text edit it automatically does a spelling check and underlines the words that are not spelled correctly with red. And every time I write something I uncheck this, because I type in both English, Swedish, slang... Etc. I just don't want this function. But then when I quit the application and restarts it, this option is checked once again. I can't seem to get it to be unchecked forever. I JUST DON'T WANT THIS FUNCTION!
Any help would be appreciated.

I disabled this as well, and it stays disabled. If you went to TextEdit->Preferences and unchecked the "Check spelling as you type" and also "Check grammar with spelling" then closed the preference, the plist file should be altered. After you have done this, check the plist file:
/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TextEdit.plist
It should show "Date Modified" as being the time when you do the alteration. Also, you might do a GetInfo on the file and see what the Sharing&Permissions say. They should be
yourname=Read & Write
everyone=No Access
If all that is true but it still isn't working, you could try tossing the plist file, relaunch TextEdit, and reset the preferences. A new plist file should be created.
Finally, I have seen cases where people having File Vault active have problems with plists not functioning correctly, and being reset to default behaviors after shutdown and restart.

  • Check spelling while typing feature (in iCal) disables itself continuously

    Hi there,
We use the iCal regularly to do write-ups for each appointment everyday. The past month or so I've noticed that everyday that I go into iCal, I have to re-check off the "Check spelling while typing" preference. Every day, I check it and then for some reason, it goes back to "correct spelling automatically" by some sort of possible default. We've never had that problem before.
Any ideas on a fix for this?
    Thanks!
    ~Natalie

    ~Natalie,
If you are referring to the Calendar>Edit>"Show Spelling and Grammar" pane, you may also want to check your System Preferences...>Keyboard>Text>"Correct spelling automatically" setting.

  • 'Check Spelling While Typing' does not work for any applications

Earlier I had a problem with misspelled words underlined but when I right-click it does not offer spelling suggestions.
Now, none of my applications underline misspelled words. Even if I select the option to "Check Spelling While Typing" it does not change anything. This applies to all applications (Mail, TextEdit, EverNote, Firefox, etc).

Update: Inexplicably the underline for misspelled words now works but now when I right-click for corrections it shows 'No Guesses Found' for any word.

  • Disable the Check Spelling While Typing feature in Stickies permanently

hello. Each time I start up Stickies, I have to manually disable the Check Spelling While Typing feature anew. Stickies don't offer a preferences panel. Would there be any other way to permanently disable this?

  • Check spelling while typing

Anybody know how to make sure this is on by default in Apreture (sic)? Can turn it on by right clicking or from edit menu or keyboard shortcut but next time open Aperture it is off again. It seems to be on by default in other Apple apps.

  • I unchecked "Check spelling as you type" but Firefox still underlines words in cut-and-pasted text in some web apps. How can I stop it from doing this?

I'm using an online web mapping application that has input boxes for descriptive text and stuff like that. Sometimes I copy blocks of text from a word processing app into these input boxes because I can format the text in the wp. When I paste the text blocks, Firefox does the wiggly red underline on words it doesn't know. I've already turned off "check spelling as you type" but this doesn't make a difference. I don't want Firefox to check spelling on these text blocks that I copy and paste. Sometimes I need to capture screen images of these text blocks in the mapping application and I want them to look clean. Thanks.

Does "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick when this happens?
You can consider to disable the spell check underline by setting the ui.SpellCheckerUnderlineStyle pref to 0 (zero) on the <b>about:config</b> page.

  • How Do I Hide Mouse Pointer While Typing In Firefox

Only in firefox, and only recently am I having problems typing anything through firefox, as the slightest touch of my laptops touch pad causes the mouse pointer to jump along with my typing cursor. This is causing major issues as I conduct all y business emails through firefox. If this cant be helped I will have to start using Internet Explorer Again. EVERY other program I use auto hides the mouse while typing, Except FF....
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Not sure, but I believe a week or so ago

I have had the same problem despite having Hide Pointer When Typing checked in Mouse Properties. Damn annoying. I thought I finally found a solution with a free utility called "Park Cursor Aside" at http://www.makeuseof.com/dir/parkcursoraside-hide-mouse-cursor-when-typing/.
Works great in Chrome and everywhere else EXCEPT Firefox. How about it Mozilla, are you are giving me another reason to switch over to Chrome? Please fix this. Thank you.

  • How do I hide the keyboard while typing an email?

On the iPad you can hide the keyboard anytime while typing.  I cannot see a way to hide the keyboard when typing a mail message. I saw a post saying you close, save, go to your saved messaes and open the message again - too time consuming.  There is a fix on the jailbroken site, but I dont want to jailbreak the phone.  There must be a way to hide the keyboard in a mail messge.  In a text message you can.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Edit
I CAN, but not fully for a preview, as the text box goes up completely after 80 odd characters on the iPhone.
So, now i cannot see a previous message for reference.
Apple needs to incorporate a  'hide keyboard' button

  • How can I set check spelling to catch words with numbers in them?

I sometimes inadvertently type a number in the middle of a word, e.g., "typ9o," but the spell-check feature never catches them. Can I change a setting to get spell-check to catch these kinds of words?

    Hi, Again,
Thanks for the info. And for a quick reply. ;-)
I checked my current cop0y of LibreOffice (I replaced OpenOffice.org with it several months ago). LibreOffice uses Hunspell as well. I had not checked the boxes to check words with numbers or all-caps as I had previously done in OpenOffice.org, so for all this time I have been thinking it would flag errors in those when it wasn't. Must have made LOTS of mistakes I didn't catch in that time. ;-(
In LibreOffice, go to Tools => Options => Languages => Writing Aids. You can choose to enable spelling and grammar checking (not sure what the grammar checker oes, since it was already enabled but I have never seen any evidence of it). The below that is a section of checkboxes where you can specify what is and is not flagged by the spell checker. I checked the words with numbers and capital letters choices. So now it will catch all the acronyms I haven't added to the spell checker dictionary.
I was looking for the same sort of choice in Firefox but didn't see it. Perhaps there is an API in Hnnspell the Firefox developers can use to add this choice as a checkbox, the way it is in LibreOffice.
I realize this may be perceived as a low priority, but I would certainly appreciate seeing it in a future update of Firefox. At least making this post helped me get the settings i wanted in my word processor.
    Take care and God bless.
    Don :)

  • How can I delete a character while typing on the iPad?

Is there a way to delete a character to the right of the cursor, instead of having to place the cursor to the right of the character you want to delete and then hitting the backspace key? It's a real pain to try to locate a cursor just to the right of a character sometimes. I'm not encouraged - haven't seen anything suggesting this feature's available - but figured it's worth asking, as Apple may fix something like this in an update.
Thanks in advance for any help.

How would it be less of a pain to locate the cursor just to the left of a character so that you can delete in the direction you are asking?

  • IWork  Pages ect. spell check while typing.

When I am using Pages, or any other program if I miss spell a word it gets underlined while I am typing. How do I make the correction while typing ? In other programs that I have used you would just dbl clicking the word and pick from a list of words to correct it. Is there a way that I can set up the spell checker to do this type of correction while typing ? I have the "Check Spelling While Typing" and "Correct Spelling Automatically" checked off to work.
    Thnx for any help.

    Hmmm, those settings should work.
Without Pages Running, move this file to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist
Reopen Pages, set those settings again & test.

  • My mac apps won't check spelling

I have a MacPro running OSX 10.8.4. My TextEdit, Pages and other mac programs have stopped checking spelling. Yes I have checked to make sure that the check spelling while typing is checked. Any ideas for fixing this?

My TextEdit does not work, nor does the spell check in Mail. I have Mountain Lion 10.8.4 on my iMac 9,1, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I have shut down and restarted.
I selected the Spelling preferences under "Edit" in both apps to Check Spelling While Typing, Check Grammar With Spelling, Correct Spelling Automatically. When typing in either app, Spell Check and Check Grammar doesn't work; I tried
Also when I selected Show Spelling and Grammar, the dialog box that should open up, doesn't---not in TextEdit nor in Mail. Check Document Now doesn't work.
I followed your directions to: 'go to System Preferences > Language & Text.  Choose the "Text" tab on top, and check the spelling box there.  Also check the "Region" '  That didn't make a difference either.
    System Software is up-to-date.

    Hey benjamin,
Please let me know what Acrobat version are you using.
You might need to go into Edit> Preferences> Spelling and check if 'Check spelling when typing' is enabled or not.
Are you trying to do the same thing? Have you tried repairing Acrobat?
    Hope to hear from you.
