    Yikes!
Many users will see references to an application called MacKeeper on various web sites and via pop-ups (and even re-directs) on their browser. Not only is it expensive for what it purports to do (freeware applications that do the same or more are readily available and in fact make up a large part of MacKeeper), it can sometimes install itself without the user realising it, and it can be very tricky to get rid of.
Most positive reviews of it have been found to have been paid for by Zeobit (developers of MacKeeper) in the form of ‘free upgrades’ etc. For example (posted by fellow contributor Softwater), on their Facebook page and on their webpage they have this apparent endorsement from UNC Charlotte:
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-18670779-12515 7/450-259/Screen+Shot+2012-06-17+at+17.04.04.png
Softwater contacted the Director of IT at the College of Arts and Architecture UNC Charlotte, about whether they endorse MacKeeper and his response, quoted here, was:
No, please do not download and install MacKeeper. We have seen problems with this software in the past.
MacKeeper has been described by various sources as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system, adding that it is unethically marketed by a company called Zeobit, with a history of making false advertising claims backed up with paid-for reviews, and a rip-off. One such opinion is:
    http://themacschool.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/mackeeper-is-scam.html
Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware can be read here:
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
MacKeeper have recently said that the uninstaller from here:
    http://applehelpwriter.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malwa re/
    now works.
    This is also worth reading:
    http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=245
    Equally phoney was iAntivirus:
    http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=341
until it was purchased recently (May 2012) by Symantic (makers of Norton anti-virus which does not work well with Apple OS X). Even after having tinkered with it, iAntivirus still fails to do the job properly and cannot be recommended.
There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X and there is therefore no reason to run anti-virus software on a Mac, but a Mac, like all computers, can transmit viruses and malware to other users particularly those running Windows. Note, however, that Trojans are another matter and can represent a genuine threat, an example of which was the recent 'Flashback Trojan' which you can read more about here:

For further information you may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer some guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.
    * The expression ‘malware’ is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software.

    Hi kjkirtley,
Your question is not quite clear about where you are doing the searches from, but I will presume you are trying to do searches from Safari (Apple’s web browser) and it is using Bing as the default search engine. You can set the default search engine to Google by going to the Safari menu > Preferences > General > Default Search Engine:

  • How do I change my default search engine from Yahoo to Google

How do I change my default search engine which appears as a free text band at the top of my default Apple website.  I want to change it from Yahoo to Google.

Safari/Preferences/General.  There is a place there to specify your default search engine.

  • I downloaded, installed and uninstalled firefox 24 yesterday but it had a search engine which I don't want, how can I download without this search engine.

How can I download firefox without the search engine it automatically takes me to when I open a new tab.?

its not search engine change homepage you like
et a single website as your home page
If you like to keep things simple, here’s how to set your home page in three easy steps.
Open the website you want to set as your home page. If you want a blank home page, open a new tab.
Click the icon to the left of the web address, drag it to the Home button, and release.
    Home page Win1
Click Yes to set this as your home page.
Try it out: Click the Home button and your new home page will load in the current tab. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
Set more than one website as your home page
This is the way to have one-click access to all of your favorite websites. For example, you can set the Firefox home button to open your email, favorite news site, and Facebook all at once.
Open a new window and load the first web site you want in your home page.
Click the new tab button and open the next web site. Repeat this step until you've opened all the desired sites in new tabs.
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options
    Select the General panel.
    Click Use Current Pages.
    Home page Win2
Click OK to close the Options window
Try it out: Close all of your tabs and then click the Home button. Watch all of your chosen pages open up in tabs. Do it again! You know you want to.
Note: Setting too many pages as your home page can make Firefox take long to start up.
    Restore the default home page
If you want to delete your home page customizations, this is the way to do it.
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options
    Select the General panel.
In the Startup box, click Restore to Default.
    Home page Win3
Click OK to close the Options window
Set what pages open when Firefox starts
This is a great feature you can use in addition to the home page settings. To save time, you can have Firefox open the pages you were visiting the last time you used it so you can continue where you left off.
At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then select Options
    Select the General panel.
In the Startup box, click the dropdown menu next to "When Firefox starts:" and select what Firefox should display when it starts up.
Show my home page - Displays the home page(s).
Show a blank page - Displays a blank page. This loads quickly since you don't have to wait for lots of tabs to load.
Show my windows and tabs from last time - Opens the pages you were visiting the last time you used Firefox so you can continue where you left off. For more information, see Restore previous session - Configure when Firefox shows your most recent tabs and windows.
Click OK to close the Options window .
Try it out: If you really want to get fancy, you can set a group of web sites as your home page and set Firefox to open the pages you were visiting the last time you used it. That way, you can pick up your work where you left off and have one-click access to your favorite sites.
    Tying it all together
Firefox is really flexible – "you" decide what works best. Keep it simple and set a single website as your home page or set up one-click access to your favorite web sites and save time by having Firefox pick up where you left off when it starts. What works best for you? Try and see!
    Having problems?

  • How do I uninstall Ask?

With a Java update my Firefox starting site has been hijacked by Ask Toolbar, indicating itself as my standard search tool instead of the Google, which was my choice.
    How do I remove it?.
I cannot find the name Ask Toolbar in my Windows list of programs. And it is not shown as a part of Java, so I can find no way to delete it. Are there any other names of programs that might cover for Ask?
I have tried to remove Java, and then reinstall it, carefully removing the x for Ask. It did not help, Ask is still dominating the starting site, and claims to be my standard. It is so annoying!
    My system is Windows 7.
    I hope for help...

First of all not that the Search Engine used by Firefox is the same as whatever is set in the search bar. You should be able to easily and immediately reset that yourself. That may be a useful first step as it is likely to assist you in finding information on the internet. Just click on the down arrow at the end of the search bar and choose whatever search engine you like.
    * see [[How to use popular search suggestions in the Search Bar]]
    Now for the uninstalling.
#If it is simply the ask toolbar their own uninstall instruction are here

    # I also note you have mindspark according to your system information link aside.
#* Background info, that may possibly include names or related software see: <br /> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindspark_Interactive_Network,_Inc.
#* And their uninstall instructions http://www.mindspark.com/main/toolbar-info/remove-mws/index.shtml
Note both should uninstall from the Windows control panel. Ask even offers an uninstall utility. Quite possibly the software could be classed as unwanted and maybe some would consider it malware, but the companies are probably reputable enough to provide accurate uninstall information.
    General uninstall instructions are here:
    # [[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]]
#Note also that you may need to reset the home page and other things that were changed this is an official addon that helps with that part of the process. It will install re set things and uninstall itself.

  • How do I change my default search engine back to google

my default search engine is ask.com
I changed my home page to be goggle but its the old firefox start unlike the one it shows when it sent me to ask :(
    Question
Every time I get online my search engine is ask UI have typed in google into my about:config settings many times yet my search engine remaines ASK (it changes back every time and iI used the google URL on firefox's help page)how do I fix this so that my search remaines with goole not ASK because I hate ASK(no offense ask).

    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • How do I change my default Search Engine from Yahoo to Google permanently?

Every time I restart Firefox my search engine reverts back to yahoo, how do I fix this permanently. I only want to use google to search for things it is much more efficient. Is there some firefox connection to yahoo that is causing this?

None of above worked for me.
    This did:
"In your address bar, type in: “about:config”
Inside of the filter search box, type in:
    browser.search.defaultenginename
Double click that entry (or right click and choose “Modify”) and then type in the name of the search engine you wish to have as the default search engine. It must be one that you already have installed and also make sure you type in the name correctly.
Now if you type in “Yahoo”, restart Firefox and when your browser comes back up you will see the red Yahoo “Y” and Yahoo as your default search engine."
    (as found on http://www.searchenginejournal.com/change-your-default-search-engine-in-firefox-google-chrome-ie/24378/)
Since I wanted to be rid of Yahoo and get Google back - in the last part instead of typing "Yahoo" I typed "Google".
    That's it.

  • How do I change my default search engine in Safari?

I would like to change my default search engine other than the options that's given in the Preferences. Does anyone know how to?

This extension claims to be able to divert your search requests to any specified search engine:

This page details a hack to change one of the defaults to an engine of your choice:

  • How do I change my default search engine in the URL bar back to Google after my ISP replaced my default search engine with their own?

Before I changed internet service providers, I could type my search queries into the url bar and receive search results from Google. After I switched ISPs, my queries typed into the url bar are put into my new ISP's horrible search engine. How do I change it back?
I've already tried going to about:config and changing the value of the keyword.URL preference to "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=" but that didn't fix my problem.
New information since creation of the post:
My ISP is Optimum. I have opted out of DNS Assistance and still have seen no change.
When my search term is two words or more, I am directed to Google search results. If my search term is only one word, however, I am still directed to Optimum's search results.

Hello samshine, try to reset the '''browser.search.defaultenginename''' in about:config and check it again.
    thank you

  • How to create an in-site search engine

How does one manually create an in-site search engine (without using Google's site search engine or the like)? Is it very difficult and time consuming?

If your site is dynamically populated with content from server-side databases, it's not hard.
If your site is static, a 3rd party search function might be a better choice until you're ready to build a dynamic site.

  • How can I uninstall Labview run time engine from the machine?

I understand that Labview has not given any provision to show customized 'License Agreement screen'. Isn't it? This is the main cause of my problem. Since I want to show our own license agreement (LA) screen, I made the one using Labview. To show this license agreement screen, I first install a small application which has only this LA screen with Labview run time engine. The customer can see License Agreement Screen with Labview Run Time Engine on his machine. If My customer accepts the LA, I will install the main application further by calling another setup.EXE file.
If my customer selects 'Do Not Agree' to the LA, I will quit the installation process. Here I also want to 'uninstall' Labview Run Time Engine
from his machine since he doesn't accept License. I would like to know how to uninstall Labview run time engine from his machine?
Another way which I could think is to run the LA screen from the CD with Labview run time engine on the CD. I will start installing the main S/W to the customer's machine with LABview Run Time Engine only after he accepts License agreement. I would like to know how to run the Labview application from CD without installing run time engine on the target machine?
Can anyone suggest solution to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Chander

    J-Tek,
I would suggest re-installing the Run-time Engine and then uninstalling it after a reboot. Also, you can download a program called Msicuu.exe (for NT, 2000, XP or Msicu.exe for 9x) to help clean up the registry for uninstalled programs.
