How do I uninstall LION?

The performance hit on my older MacBook Pro is not what I expected.  I would like to uninstall LION, unfortunately, inserting my Leopard CD did not work, gave me an error message saying I couldn't install Leopard.  Anyone have any suggestions/ideas?  Thanks.

Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

My mac keeps freezing on me, particularly when Im on safari. The most annoying part is that it happens three or four times in a matter of an hour, and then Im prompted to submit a report that feels like a joke considering that we have yet to see an update for lion solving this issue, and the problem persists. How can I uninstall lion and get macs previous iOS back?

I'm getting a window saying the installation has failed, that I should reinstall Lion.  How can I uninstall it?

You can also use the OS X Lion installer from the Mac App Store to create an external bootable drive, complete with a Recovery HD partition. See this article for more details. This approach will, at least, create a bootable drive with Recovery HD which you can carry with you in case you need to use Internet Restore or make use of the other utilities Recovery HD provides.

  • How do i uninstall lion, how do i uninstall lion

I need the online banking feature of Quicken 2006, and Intuit does not make a Lion-compatible version that has this capability.
I made a big mistake installing Lion prematurely.  How do I uninstall it?  Is there any other way besides using  the Snow Leopard installation disc to access Disk Utility erase the hard drive, reinstall Snow Leopard, and restore a Time Machine backup?
    Ouch!

No, there's no other way. But before you do that, consider this: there will probably never be a Lion-compatible version of Quicken. Someday, maybe years from now, you'll need to replace your Mac. The new Mac won't be able to run Snow Leopard, or Quicken. What will you do then? You'll have to migrate eventually. You might as well do it now.

  • How do I uninstall lion without losing all programs

I stupidly (now after a lot of research) installed lion over my main drive, and now my mac is running funny, safari is different, I cannot load my security and privacy preferences pane (and having fraudulant activity on my visa so extremely worried with this one) and other things, generally I just do not like it and wish to go back to snow leopard.  I do not have a time machine but will purchase an external hard drive if someone can verify it will save all my programmes eg microsoft word and ps 5 (which were given to me so cannot reinstall from a disk) and I can reinstall them on snow leopard.  Iv found the only way I can reinstall leopard is to wipe everything - like when I first brought this mac, so this information is critical.  copying all my files, photos etc is fine, but all the year I have spent getting extra programs is the thing Im worried about the most!!

Because you cannot downgrade from Lion without first erasing the drive, then you must make a backup of your files and plan to reinstall your third-party software.

  • How do I uninstall Lion and go back to Snow Leapard

Just discovered that Lion Breaks my NAS Time Machine so I have lost the ability to back up regularly. This is a deal breaker for me until the NAS provider QNAP provides updated drivers.
Is there a simple retrograde step to remove Lion or do I need to do a rebuild of the Hard Drive from Snow Leopard and the last good TM Image?

    Please follow these instructions:

  • I wish to uninstall os x maverick how do I uninstall and  restore os x lion?

After purchasing my mac air I purchased and downloaded os x lion. A few weeks ago apple offered a free download of os x mavericks which I downloaded, since downloading my mac has not functioned well and  some programmes will not run atall, how can I uninstall mavericks and restore lion.

You can only downgrade OS X by first erasing the drive then installing the original version of OS X that came pre-installed when you purchased it. Or:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

Is there anything official from APPLE on how to uninstall LION ?  My Macbook shuts down if I try startup from a Snow Leapard disc.  Can I just drag the entire image from my iMAC to an erased Macbook ?

Thanks for the info.  Here's what I did by copying my iMAC image (SL) onto my Lionized Laptop:  Connected firewire from my Laptop to my 27 inch iMAC, put the laptop in Target Disk Mode (Startup Disk System Preferences), booted the iMAC and used Disk Utility to ERASE and Restore the Laptop with my iMAC image.

To add to Frank's post .... Or you can boot from the install disks that came with your system, use Disk Utilities to erase the Lion volume and reinstall your prior OS. This assumes you want to remove Lion completely. Back up your system prior to doing this.
