  • Can not see hard drive on desktop after reinstalling Mountain Lion

I have erased my hard drive and reinstalled Mountain Lion 10.8.4 and now I can not see the MacIntosh HD on the desk top. Downloaded the most recent updates and restarted but still do not see the hard drive on the desk top. Any ideas?

Open Finder preferences and on the general tab check Hard disks for Show these items on the desktop.

  • Wiped hard drive and tried to reinstall Mountain Lion but it installed Lion instead.

Everything was fine except that it was going slow from 2 years worth of clutter. I wiped the hard drive and continued on with the installation instructions without noticing until now that it installed Lion instead of Mountain Lion. What do I do? If I have to reinstall, I'd rather not have to download it again. I have it on my external hard drive but it won't show up since I did all this.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You used Internet Recovery to reinstall Mac OS X, so Lion was installed instead of OS X Mountain Lion. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
To install OS X Mountain Lion, open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download OS X Mountain Lion. If you have a USB drive with Mountain Lion, you can use it to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion

  • I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need

I am looking to back up my MAC, and I need to know how big of an external hard drive I need. How do I determine this?

Well, they recommend at least 2 - 3 times the size of your hard drive if you are using Time Machine because that keeps making backups until it runs out of space (and then deletes the oldest to make room for the newest).
However, if you prefer to have a bootable clone as a backup, you need about the same size as your hard drive since it is a perfect copy of your system (unless you want to partition and keep an older clone separately).
So, check to see how large your hard drive is and go from there.

What version of PS?  If it's CC, just reinstall the CC application manager then PS and sign in.  For an earlier version you will need to call Abobe to have you S/N reset.

  • Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2 try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2nd try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

    Yes.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

  • How do I unlock my hard drive (using disk utility or otherwise)?

    Help!
I accidentally locked my Mac hard drive where I know the system password, but now it won't boot up.  When I go to disk utility to try to change the password or unlock the drive, I see my hard drive, but when I click on the drive and go to the file menu, I don't have the option that I've seen in some solutions to this problem posted on this site (including one by Dr Mac that describes going to the command under "file" as "unlock drive name" - which doesn't seem to be an option for me)  (Instead, my options are new window, new, open disk image, close, get info, and unmount (name of my hard drive)).  In grey, and not available, are the options - "eject, enable journaling, change password, and turn off encryption."
How do I get to a point where I can enter the system password and get back into my computer?  Any assistance you can offer would be hugely appreciated!
    Jim

Boot into recovery mode (hold down the ⌘R keys on restart), select the Terminal app from the Utilities menu option, and copy & paste in these one liners into the window that pops up, following each with hitting the return key. At the Password: prompt, enter your admin user password and hit the return key.
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
Then, select Startup Disk from the Utilities menu, select the normal boot volume, and click the Restart button.

  • Had to get new hard drive and need to reinstall iTunes

My very new PC went beserk and I had to get a new hard drive. Everything off the old drive is irretrievable. I have my iTunes library backed up to an external drive (everything is also on my iPod). However, I don't want to have to "count" the new computer as one of the five machines on which I can copy my iTunes library, since it's not technically a "new" computer but just a replacement of my not-so-old one, which was barely 9 months old before it went kaput. Is there a way to reinstall iTunes and my library without getting dinged for yet another transfer of the library? Thanks.

Hi I can't figure out how to post a question of my own, so I'm asking it on this one because it is close to mine.
I just switched from a Sony Viao to a MBP, and tried to transfer my ITunes library from the Sony to my new MBP using a USB stick. I put all the music in my music library onto the stick, it said that it used 4.99 GB, and when I tried to put the music onto my MBP it only added 1.98 GB.
I thought that maybe the music it wasn't transferring was the music I purchased on my earlier laptop, but it transfered a few of my movies that I purchased off of ITunes. Please Help?

  • After my hard drive was replaced I installed Mountain Lion. I was unable to use time machine or migration assistant to access files on my external Omega hard drive even though the files are still there?  Is there another way?

My hard drive on my iMac was unrepairable so Apple installed a new one for me.  When I reconnected my external Iomega USB hard drive I could "see" the original backup figures and the rows of "windows" and back to the original red rows of dates in time machine, but I could only access the recent installation date of my new OS X Mountain Lion.  Migration assistant would not work as well only accessing the recent backups.  Is there a way to "unlock" the past data so I can retrieve my documents and photos without resorting to purchasing "rescue" software??

    I can't see backups for a disk/partition that's no longer connected

  • Hard Drive Died need to reinstall Audition and Sounbooth on new SSD. Both products are registered on adobe site with s/n's

The hard drive on my Dell died and the backup discs and external drives were useless in getting me back to normal. How do I reinstall these products or am I forced to purchase more?

Just reinstall them, then use your serial number to activate them.
If you already activated more than once, you may need to Contact Customer Care.

  • I use a registered copy of LR5. I lost my hard drive and need to reinstall it on my new HD. Please advise the correct way to do this.

I Use a registered copy of LR5.5.  my hard drive has been replaced & I need to know the correct procedure to reinstall it on my new HD.  I should get my PC back within a week.  Can you please provide direction for this?

Paulewog you can install Lightroom 5.6 by downloading the installation files from Product updates.  Please choose the download appropriate for your operating system.  If you need to locate your serial number then it can be found under your account at http://www.adobe.com/.  You can find more details at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.

  • Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive won't mount on Mountain Lion

I have the Western Digital My Book Studio II external hard drive.  It was working fine.  After upgrading to Mountain Lion, the disk does not mount.  I can't find any help on the Western Digital site.  Has anyone else run into this?  Is there a solution?
Immediately, I'm more concerned about getting the data off this drive than getting it to work.  If I take it to an Apple Store with another external drive, could they transfer the data to it for me?

Also, check the Western Digital website for software updates. They have made numerous updates recently.

  • Can i still use my old hard drive without time capsule in Mountain Lion OS

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion OS but don't want to use Time capsule for time machine backup and still like to use my existing external hard disk for time machine backup. Is this possible? At present I have OSX lion.
    Thanks
    svjaymacuser

It should work if the drive is connected directly to your Mac. That is not the same as saying that it will work.
Since Mountain Lion was just released, it might make sense to hold on a few weeks and watch the forums for new and unforeseen issues before you dive in.

  • I have to replace my Hard Drive and I upgraded to Mountain Lion via iTunes download. Am I going to face issues?

I'm planing on installing a Seagate Momentus LP 1TB internal drive. I've read that it is difficult to formatt the HD to macs on OS systems prior to Mountain Lion. I was running ML when I crashed but I don't have an instalation disk for Mountain Lion given that I downloaded it from iTunes. Any advice or words of wisdom. Thank you.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
