How do I update Safari if can't update OSX 2007 Macbook?

I have a 2007 Macbook running OSX 10.6.8.  I can't update to later version of OSX because not supported for 2007 Macbooks.  Can I update Safari separately?  When I go to Apple site it only seems to offer Safari as part of OSX update which I can't do.

Hello susanfromesc,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to update Safari without updating the OS. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

You can find answers to both at OWC as well as installation tutorials. I think you will find 1 to 1.5 TBs are the largest.

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?

  • How do I update my old MacBook to the newest operating system, but want to clean it out thoroughly first (without losing my data). How should I best go about doing this?

Hi everybody. I have a MacBook that's about five years old. I want to buy the newest operating system so that it runs better (because currently it is struggling), however I would like to clean up all the old software before I do that. I want it to be as clean and new as possible before I buy the new operating system, instead of just downloading it ontop of all of the rubbish I must have accumulated. I also want to keep my data (documents, photographs etc). Would anybody be kind enough to provide me with a step-by-step (can be as concise as you like, depending on how much time/effort you have to explain!) guide as to how I might go about doing this myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank so much guys.

Step number one - Back up all your important data!
Seriously, it sounds like you are working without backups. Don't ever do this. Hard drives fail, it is a fact of life. Don't be one of those who get caught without a backup. An external hard drive, burning it all to DVDs, or online backup will save you frustration and money.
Two - don't expect a new operating system to improve performance. Get the computer running as best as it can before you upgrade. You may need more RAM or a bigger hard drive.

  • How do I update OSX 10.6.8 to 10.7 on a Mac Mini with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM?

I have an older Mac Mini but it has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor that I thought would work to update from 10.6.8 to 10.7 - but Lion is no longer available to download on the App Store, Is there any way to do it?

If you have a Early or Late 2009 MacMini3,1 or newer you can upgrade to Mavericks for free by using the App Store.
You should also consider maximizing your RAM.

I have a Mac Book pro (2007) I would like to update to Lion but it currently has leopard on it and I need to find snow leopard before I can update to Lion. Where can I update the Mac Book to snow leopard?

You call Apple and purchase a Snow Leopard installer disk. After you install Snow Leopard you update to 10.6.8 and then from the App Store you can purchase and download Lion.

  • HT1338 How do I update my 2009 Macbook OSX 10.5.8 to Mountain Lion?

I'm not even sure this is possible... My computer has stopped recieving updates so it looks like it's about time for an upgrade but I haven't a clue where to begin given how old my current software is. I read the requirements for Mountain Lion and my computer is compatable but I'm still quite confused. Please help!

Buy or Obtain an OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard disk. These cost $29.99 a peice, and is required to use the Mac App Store.
Run software update. You only need to install the OS X Update. You don't have to update other things like itunes until you have Mountain Lion.
When you have the Mac App Store available, launch it. Locate Mountain Lion. Should be on the front page. Buy it with your iTunes account, similar to buying a song or an iOS App. It will download an Installer application. If the application does not launch automatically, launch it. This application will lead you through all the steps required.
Before you update, make a backup, if you have not already made one. Do not use Time Machine if you are on 10.5.8. Use something like Carbon Copy Clonor. (Google it). You should probably back up your entire disk.

  • How big a internal hard drive can I replace in my macbook pro 160/sd. I had a 750 in but it died. Can I put a 1TB?

I have a MacBook Pro 13.3 inch from 2010. It came with 160/SD. I replaced it 3 years ago with a 750GB Seagate which just died per Apple genius. BUt, need to replace it now. Can I replace with a 1TB or only another 750GB?

it will hold even a 12.5mm thick 1.5TB HD
most 1TB drives are 9.5mm thick
It will NOT however hold a 15.2mm HD.
      Typical bare 2.5" hard drives. 7mm left (250-500gig), 9.5mm right (500gig-1TB), and 15.2mm 4 platter drive at back (2TB)

  • How big of a hard drive can I install on my MacBook unibody polycarbonate

I'm running out of space of my MacBook's hard drive and I want to upgrade it. Would it be able to accept a 1tb hard drive drive? And also I'm going to be upgrading ram to 8gb because mountain has slowed my computer down. I don't mind doing this because my computer is very important to me.

    Hi,
Should be ok to use 2TB HDD and lower. Anything bigger/larger (capacity) than 2.2TB you may get problem and have to do more work to be able to get it right.

  • Should I update my 2007 Macbook to Lion?

I have an old MacBook, specs here:
    2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I really want to update to iCloud, but need to update to Lion first if I am going to do that. Will my computer slow down significantly? I have seen messages indicating that it is either super fast or super slow -- no real indication what may happen if I put it on my machine.
Any advice you can provide would be stellar.
    Thanks so much,
    Olivia

Your computer probably would run the newest OS X Lion OK; however it should have more RAM installed first. Note that Lion is rather different in how it appears and some things have certainly changed from Leopard 10.5 and Snow Leopard 10.6. You may find it interesting, but if you do not like it after an upgrade, the older OS version would no longer be available for you to re-boot to (and the new Lion has a different appetite for applications and utilities, these would likely require an update or upgrade as well, in order to work.) Do you make backup clones? Are they bootable?
My first-edition MacBook (1.83GHz core-duo 13") had 1024MB RAM installed, via two-512MB chips; it was OK even running Leopard 10.5.8, but runs significantly better with two-1024MB chips. In mine, this maxxed out the RAM. Check your computer model's upgrade spec capability and install as much upgrade RAM, usually in pairs or similar capacity/series chips, as it can use.
If you make a bootable complete backup clone of your computer's current hard disk drive content, to an external self-powered hard disk drive, you could still have access to any or all of the older content should you upgrade; as some older files or content may not be available to you after you upgrade. You may have to buy or get later versions of correct software in order to access files; some may also be converted when opened.
The Lion page in Apple Support should cover the minimum hardware specifications for the new 10.7.x system; since your MacBook is a Core 2 Duo, that should work OK if the RAM is upgraded and if the hard disk drive has space enough for any older files. But, you should check into what else you may have to buy to be able to continue using your older saved work; as Leopard 10.5.8 is a few steps behind Lion 10.7.2.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can't Reinstall OSX Onto Macbook Pro

We have a MacBook Pro that suffered a hard drive failure.   We've installed a new Hard Drive, and now are not having any luck getting the OSX to reinstall.
    - Looking up by S/N: this is a "Mid-2010 Core i5 MacBook Pro 15-inch" its an A1286.
    - Just pressing the power button results in a screen with a blinking ? File Folder
    - Pre-Installed OS is listed as 10.6.3. My understanding is that it has to be at least 10.7 for an Internet Recovery to function.  We've tried the Command-R at boot anyway, and the result is that it sits at the Apple logo on a Grey screen indefinitely
    - We have a Retail OSX disc that is labeled as 10.6.3. With the disc in the drive, and pressing Option key at startup, we get to the screen to select the Boot Volume, where the only option is "Mac OS X Install DVD."  Selecting this option makes the DVD start to spin up for a moment then stop, and it takes us back to the grey screen with the apple logo, where it just sits.
    - The OSX DVD is a known good disc.
    - At this point we're stuck, and don't know what to do next.

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
