How do I update the BIOS?

OK, I finally got my Portege R100 salvaged, and it was a struggle!!!  At this point it boots into XP, but I still have a BIOS problem.  My current BIOS is 1.6 (the latest) but it does not behave properly so it does not give me the chance to change the boot sequence.  This keeps me from running the recovery disk so I need to fix the BIOS.
I have the install packs for 1.6, 1.5, and some of the earlier ones.  If I try to reflash 1.6, it tells me that I already have 1.6 (yeah, thanks for that info).  If I try to "roll back" to version 1.5, it tells me I am not authorized to do that.  So if my BIOS is corrupted and it won't let me reflash the current version, and it won't let me roll backwards, and there is no later version available, what I am supposed to do?
Normally I could burn an ISO image of the BIOS updater and fix it from the CD, but since I can't boot from the CD drive (because of the BIOS problem) . . . well, you get the idea!  It also doesn't boot from CD even if I change the boot priority in Toshiba HW Setup (and it used to so I know this hardware is compatible).
Thoughts?

That uses an external USB cd drive doesn't it?  The only thing I can think of is to make sure the external is plugged in and recognized while in WIndows, then rebooting the system with the bootable CD in the drive, then pray that it actually offers the option to boot to the external.  IF it doesn't I don't know what to tell you as you can't reflash or revert back to a previous flash with a windows based bios flash utility, only one that is run from a self booting disk.
This is one of the many reasons why I consider a laptop that without an optical drive to be a fancy toy rather than a real computer.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • How do you update the Bios safely when using onboard RAID mirror? Z87-G45

How do you update the Bios safely when using onboard RAID with Z87-G45?   I'm using a simple two drive, RAID 1 mirror setup.
I'm currently at bios 1.4, and want to move up.  However, last time I upgraded the BIOS, the machine rebooted with improper settings for the RAID (they get hosed during BIOS flash) and Windows decided to auto-repair the only boot drive it could see, one half of the mirror, because it couldn't see the RAID array correctly and *POOF*  bare-metal reinstall required.
My PC will not let me press the DEL key on bootup to access the bios, even with MSI Fast Boot not installed.  It just ignores the DEL key and tries to load windows which, if that happens, will flame-out my RAID array after a bios flash if I can't catch it to enable the RAID first before windows loads.
I do not want to rebuild my PC again simply because I do a BIOS update.

FYI: BIOS 1.4 & 1.8 are using the same RAID version: 12.7.0.1936
based on this RAID surprise should not hapends.
But as pandaz says if you have no issues, leave bios update alone.
there are still risks something to messed up,
best do a backup of your data just in case if you want to try latest version

  • How can I update the BIOS without using a CD?

    Hello!
I have recently decided to upgrade my RAM from 2GB to 4GB. After installing, I booted up my computer to find that it would not recognize the new memory. After doing a bit of troubleshooting, I decided to try and update the BIOS, as the version was from 2010. I downloaded the BIOS update boot CD application from lenovo, burned a disc, and on reboot I found that the boot order did not have CD listed on it. Here's the catch: I don't have the supervisor password. This is a hand-me-down laptop, and I have tried to find the password to no avail. This is the current boot order: USB drive, Hard drive.
My question is, can I either create a BIOS update disc using a USB, or update the BIOS some other way?
I understand that it is impossible to recover the supervisor password without having it serviced (which I would rather not do, even if I have to send my RAM back to Crucial)
    My system specs:
    Thinkpad L512
    Bios version: 1.04
    Bios date: 2010-3-26
    Embeded Controller Version: 1.01
    Windows 7 32 bit
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Two things here:
    a) If you run System Update, it should offer the latest BIOS for your machine as well. I've never done it on a passworded unit, so it might or might not work but might be worth a shot.
    b) I doubt that the ability of the system to recognize new RAM has anything to do with the BIOS. ThinkPads much older than yours will run 4-8GB RAM with an old BIOS, older than your machine to begin with.
    Good luck.

  • MSI H61M-P21 (B3) - Won't start, how can I update the BIOS?

    Hello Everyone!
I just bought an MSI H61M-P21 (B3) Motherboard along with Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge (2.4 GHz) and 1 DIMM of 4GB DDR3 1600 KingMax. I use NJOY 500W true power as power supply. The system starts but no image, no beep code, nothing... Testet with another DIMM of RAM (4GB DDR3 1333 KingMax), but no luck. Tested with another power supply (450w true power), no luck again. I have tested the motherboard out of case, put on an antistatic surface, no luck... Reset CMOS, same situation: no image, no beepcodes...  On the Main BIOS Chip of the motherboard is a little sticker on which is written "E7680IMSH30" - i guess that the motherboard comes 'shipped' with 7680vH3 BIOS.
Is there a possibility to update the bios without replacing the CPU or send the board to RMA? I'm almost sure that the problem is around here...
Thanks in advance! Any answer is welcome!
P.S.: I appologise for my bad english.

    Good morning.
I've tested the motherboard this weekend with another DIMM of 4GB DDR3 1333, ThermalTake PSU (500W, i don't remember the model) and Core i3-2120 CPU - those components were taken from another IDENTICAL motherboard H61M-P21 (B3) with same version of BIOS. Didn't worked... I have tested my Celeron CPU G530 on the functional H61M-P21 (B3) and it's working...
So, there is a problem with my mainboard, i will send it to warranty.
Thanks a lot. Have a nice day!

  • Tecra M3 - Can't update the BIOS

    Hi,
I have a Tecra M3 (PTM30E) and TEMPRO is telling they're 2 bios updates for the machine.
I have downloaded them, but when I run them I am told the computer is not supported. How do I update the BIOS?
    Best wishes
    Michael

Why to hell do you need a BIOS update?
Only because the Tempro said that there is a new update?
Tempro sends only a notification that a new file has been uploaded
Its not a recommendation that you have to update this!
So if your notebook runs trouble free dont update anything!!
I always follow this advice; never change a running system! And its really wise advice

  • Satellite A660-18N - Screen it too bright so how to update the BIOS?

Hi guys, I need your help with this laptop because it is giving me a lot of problems.
I have changed the screen of this Satellite A660-18N because the one that was fitted in was damaged. I have installed it and is working fine but I'm having problems with the brightness. When I click - on the brightness it goes up and when I click + it goes down. It's way too bright and want to do something to fix it.
Does the bios help to fix this problem and how do I flash the BIOS on these laptops? I did flash BIOS on desktop pc but on this I can't see any way of doing it. Is there any way of fixing the screen without changing the BIOS? Some people said that I have to flash the BIOS because new screens wont work 100% with old BIOS.
    Please help
    Thank you

Thank you very much Xardas for your reply.
It is 3rd party screen. I bought it from ebay. They said that it's original. It says made from Samsung. The original one was also made from samsung. The guys from Toshiba said that you might have to update bios so that it will accept other screens. I told them which one I bought and they did confirm that it should work fine.
I wanted to flash the bios with the latest bios and maybe it could work fine. I just don't know how to do it? I did create a bootable usb and placed the bios in it but don't know the command to flash it. I did go in bios but did not find anything that would be helpful to flash.
I also was thinking to use some kind of software that makes it little bit darker. It's way too bright. My eyes hurt to use it. I always have to use sunglasses.
If you know anything it really would be helpful.
    Thank you

  • Updating the BIOS: is it worth? And how to?

    Hello everyone.
    I have an Hp Envy dv-6 -7280sl
I formatted it, and installed Windows 7 64bit and Ubuntu 13.10 in dual boot.
Some days ago the notebook didn't let me enter in Windows 7 partition, giving me a 0xc00000e9 error. When I ran the Long DST test, it failed.
I managed to format the Windows 7 partition, and installed it once again. Now it's properly working,  and the Long DST test is passing. But If I insert a Windows 7 64bit repair disk, it still gives me the 0xc00000e9 error.
What can I do? Do I need to update the bios? Is it worth?
And how can I do it, since the HP page want me to select "Windows 8"?

BIOS update is always a good thing to do if needed but in your case first needs to solve the error problem your having when you use the repair disk. And then if you want to check on the HP driver support with your product number and see if there was BIOS update to your system. But when doing BIOS update make sure your batter is working order and power is good causing having a filed BIOS update is not a good thing to have. But in my experiences of flashing the BIOS unless something forbids happens updating a bios is something you should read the instructions and do it when your not using the computer for anything else. But generally if you do it carefully and not rush BIOS updating is should work fine just make sure to get the right BIOS that matching our product number. Also to your two paritions is there a reason why you need Ubuntu? I would think Windows would more then suffice and the problem might coming from the Unbuntu partitions when the repair disk does a scan. Put this way wipe the total hard drive clean partitions and make just one system Windows 7 and if any errors appears then you can tell if it is software based or hard drive based problems.

    Hello Daniel,
Im a little bit confused about your message.
What do you mean with only have half of the bios?
    Whats wrong with the BIOS?
The Toshiba support said -> try a BIOS update.
On the Toshiba page you can download the BIOS for the Satellite A40.
It seems you didnt check the download page detailed because on this page you would find this instruction:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07
The BIOS update was detailed described in this document and you should follow these guide lines to update the BIOS.

  • How do you update the song/artist information on songs that you have loaded to the cloud.  Some are not displaying correctly on my Iphone.

I have loaded all my music to the cloud from my hard drive.  When I am viewing the music on my PC from the cloud it wasn't displaying all of the song/artist information correctly.  I took the time to go into each one that wasn't displaying correctly using the "get info" option and I updated them all.  Now they are displaying properly on my PC but not on my Iphone.  I'm sure it was because of the way they were loaded.  My question is how do I update the information for the music that is on the cloud so it will display to my Iphone correctly (and the Ipad I just bought but haven't setup yet?

Pretty sure I just downloaded the .exe files to the SD card (I have a directory called "drivers" there & ran from Windows, no need to boot from anything else. Didn't even need to use Safe Boot. The files do need an .exe extension IE someimes downloads as _exe. No idea why but would just need to rename if download has the underscore and not the period. The you can run them.
Was so easy I really did not think about it. One of the Intel Platform drives does say "requires 1.60 update" so that is the one you need. Do the 1.60, reboot, and then the Intel update.
Key point is the release note on the Intel Platform Installer
    "Release Notes
1.Please install the  Windows BIOS version 1.60 or higher for Encore WT8-A (PDW09x) before installing this Intel Platform Installer update." note this says "BIOS" and not "USB BIOS" which is a smaller file.

Stop further attempts and follow the below:
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
A.) Download the attached archive (180.rar) and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress.
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool.
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick.
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled.
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive.
         F.) Boot to the USB
G.) Now follow the directions and let the tool flash
H.) After flashing reinstall ME drivers in Windows: http://download.msi.com/dvr_exe/intel_amt10_mb.zip

  • How can I flash the bios of a MSI kt3 ultra2 without a floppy drive?

How can I flash the bios of a MSI kt3 ultra2 without a floppy drive?
I used the msi live update software to download the bios update programe...when I run it gives 2 options dos and windows
but the windows option is greyed out and the dos option requires a floppy drive (mine does not work)..what can I do?

I can tell you what you need to do but unfortunately - not how to do all of it.
You will need to make a bootable CD with the neccessary files on it .- Somewhere on the www you should be able to find the instructions. I have flashed from a CD   with no problems on a K7S5A board . The CD image was available as a complete download and just needed burning to the CD  so - apart from the obvious ( BIOS file , BIOS installer ,command.com,msdos .sys, io.sys)I don't know what else might  be needed on the CD- unfortunately the disk I made is long gone.
I'm sure a search will find what you need to know.
Once you have the disk -just insert in CD Drive - restart and follow the instructions.

  • Updating the BIOS on Satellite A30

    Hi,
I'm about to update the BIOS on my Toshiba Satellite A30 Laptop (Service Pack 3).
I have downloaded the updated BIOS and have decided to update the BIOS from within Windows as recommended on the Toshiba website.
On the website it mentions prior to upgrading the BIOS please ensure the following:
    Notebook PC BIOS update:
Prior to upgrading the BIOS please ensure the following:
    - Notebook is undocked.
    - Notebook is connected to the mains.
    - Notebook must be in boot mode and not resume mode.
    - Remove any PC Cards.
    1. Windows based BIOS update:
    1. Extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
    2. Make sure that all open files are saved and all applications are closed.
    3. Execute the extracted *.exe file in the temporary folder. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    4. The BIOS update will be done automatically.
    5. After a few minutes the Notebook will restart automatically.
I'm not sure by what it means by Notebook must be in boot mode and not resume mode
What is boot mode and how do I get my laptop in this mode?
Can I not just run the downloaded file from my desktop?
    Thanks;

    Hi
Boot mode means the notebooks should be powered off ;)
Its simply off and ready to boot the OS when pressing the power button ;)
    But listen dude;
This decryption belongs to the traditional BIOS update.
You can find ONLY the win-based BIOS update on the Toshiba page.
This BIOS can be updated only from running Windows OS.
PS: BIOS update is not necessary if the notebook is running trouble free

  • Tecra S5 - Is it worth to update the BIOS?

I bought a Tecra S5 notebook recently and yesterday I noticed an update of the BIOS in the Toshiba website.
I googled alot and also searched this forum and found a lot of threads about people having problems after updating (flashing) their BIOS. So I want to ask if the update is worth it, and if somebody owning a S5 has done it. Also could somebody tell me if there is a way to ensure you can roll back previous BIOS version after an update goes wrong?
The notebook is precious to me and since living in this financial crisis time means I won't be able to buy a new one if I screw this up I want to be sure. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I installed Vista 64 due to having 4 GB of RAM.

    Hello
First of all a BIOS update is not necessary if your notebooks runs smoothly. Never touch a running system ;)
A BIOS update is only advisable if you have problem with it, for example not properly recognized RAM modules or so.
I only update the BIOS of my notebook if I have problems with it and that means I updated the BIOS on my Toshiba notebooks 3 times as yet. Im not a Tecra S5 owner but I never had a problem with the BIOS updates. Some people who reported that the BIOS update failed did forget to read some instructions how to do that:
Before you start a BIOS update you should close all running programs and close all background processes that you dont need. Also your antivirus and firewall should be disabled and must be logged in as administrator. Dont forget to connect the AC/DC adaptor before you start it.
If you follow these tips normally the BIOS update should be done successfully.
A BIOS downgrade to an older version can only be done from anuthroized service provider. That means you can downgrade it yourself.
But newer versions are pretested from Toshiba and should not cause more problems as before. Newer BIOS versions fix problems.
I hope I could help you a little bit! :)

  • How do I update the software on my Airport Express?

    Hello everyone,
I have an Airport Extreme base station acting as WDS and an Airport Express station. I recently upgraded the security on the Airport Extreme base station from 128-WEP to WPA (Personal), but I don't know whether I have to do something to the Airport Express base station. It's green light is on. Do I need to do something? Also, how do I update the software in the Express? Whenever I open the Airport Admin Utility, the only thing that comes up on a scan is my Extreme base station. Any advice would be most appreciated.

yes you need to update your Airpost Express. I just went through this last week with two of my Airport Expresses. I updated my Base and my Remote's light was green but was unable to view it in Airport Admin Utility. So this is what I ended up doing and it works great.
First bring the Airport Express you are working on in the same room as your computer......just the ease of seeing what is going on with the Airport Express. Next you need to reset it.....take a paper clip and push in the little button next to the Audio port and hold in 10 seconds. Then unplug the unit wait 10 seconds and plug it back in. wait about 3 minutes and then you will need to use Airport Set Up Assistant. You will need to make sure you have WPA Personal on your Airport Express too.
don't forget to make sure you have the update firmware too.
