How do I upgrade from iOS 4 to new iOS without losing my app data

Hi, I am still on iOS 4, and I understand that I need to erase my iPad before upgrading. But I don't want to lose the game data stored locally, particularly the candy crush. :) is there a way to preserve those data while upgrading?

I agree with Meg.
If you drill down in that HT4972 article you provided, you will eventually wind up on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 article which says in part (under iTunes will back up the following information):
App Store Application data including in-app purchases (except the Application itself, its tmp and Caches folder).
You should be fine.
UPDATE - Here are drill down details from HT4972:
Go to
If you are attempting to update using a Mac or PC with which you normally sync
Go to  Back up your device by syncing it with your Mac or PC first
Go to iOS device backups preserve your settings, the Camera Roll (or Saved Pictures), and other important data. Learn more about what is stored in a backup.

  • How do I upgrade my iPod touch to IOS 5.0.1 without losing my app data?

I want to upgrade my iPod touch (4.3.3) to IOS 5.0.1, but I don't want to lose my app data (Tiny Tower, etc.)
I transferred all my purchases to the host computer. I also backed up my app data. Before I update the IOS software on my iPod touch, I'd like to find out if the app data on my iPod will be erased as part of the upgrade.
If so, will a restore from backup restore the app data?

How do I downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard without losing iWork 09?  I upgraded my MBP from 10.5 (originally 10.4) to 10.6, then again to 10.7.  Should I go back to 10.4, 10.5 or just to 10.6? I don't remember which system included iWork 09 and don't want to lose it. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the information!  My sister gave me the MBP for my daughter with Leopard installed.  I purchased Snow Leopard and installed it, then my daughter purchased Lion.  So I do have all the installers.  If iWork wasn't included with any of those, I guess my sister purchased it while running Leopard.  I'll have to contact her.  Thanks again.

Regarding the game progress, i tried and it do work .
    You can try it
Take any apple device and download any game that you are playing already on your device
Sign in game center with your APPLE ID  on the new device and open the game
U will find it the same as you play it in your device with the same progress .
You can test it without any risk at all

  • How can I temporarily remove games from my iPhone without losing the app data included?

My iPhone 5 is running low on space so I plan on cleaning it out soon. I have a lot of games on my iPhone with app data included that I don't play as often. I was planning on removing these temporarily because some day I might want to play them again but I'm afraid I won't have my progress anymore. Ex: My levels conquered on Cut The Rope or my worlds on Minecraft PE.
So is there a solution out there for me to be able to temporarily remove my games without losing their app data? All feedback is greatly appreciated and I how there is a way to do this!

The only way to recover the data for a deleted app would be to restore from a backup made before you deleted the app.  Apps and their data are integral to eachother, so deleting one deletes the other.
If you have a backup, you could restore from that to restore an App's data, but a restore is also an all or nothing option - the restore will restore everything to the state of the backup, not single or selective items.
Other than that, there is no way to acheive what you wish - if you delete the app you delete its data.

go to your music folder on the old.  copy your music folder.  on the new computer.  move that folder and replace the music folder thats on the new computer.  you have not added anything to the new comp right ?  then open itunes.  it will update your library to all those files and then run a backup.. hope that helps

  • The computer i normaly sync my ipad on has broken. how do i now sync/update on my new computer without losing my apps, music etc?

The harddrive on my old laptop which my ipad was originally set up on literaly melted so i no longer have access to that.
I bought a new laptop and I need to know how to set my ipad up and update it on this one without losing any apps/music etc??

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use your back up copy to put everything on the new computer.

  • My Ipod is synced to my old computer. How to I sync it to my new computer without losing the songs on my ipod?

My Ipod is syncd to my old computer and I want to sync it to my new computer without losing the content on my Ipod

    Transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
Transfer other music by using on of the thirdt party programs dicsussed here:
    new PC: Apple Support Communities
Theaftr transfering the stuff, restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and then sync.
If you can move the iPod backup file to the new computer you can restore from backup.
The backup file is located here:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

  • How do I use my iPhone 4s with a new computer without losing all my data?

Basically long story short my laptop just died, I can't get it past the start up screen and have subsequently lost all my music, files and iTunes Libary - and yes I know it's dumb of me not have a back up and I will not be making that mistake again - I have purchased a new laptop running windows 8 however as my iPhone is synced with my old laptop it will not allow me to sync with the new one without losing all of my data. Now I manually managed everything bar my apps on my old laptop but when I check to manually manage eveerything on the new laptop I obviously get the error message I will lose data when it syncs to the new laptop and I don't know what to do.
I've lost all my music before and when I don't have my old files to back up what I lose I'm at a loss... can anyone help?
If I click to manually manage will I just lose my apps as this was the onlyu thing synced with my old laptop? I can cope losing these....

  • Can I backup my iPhone into a new iTunes install on a new PC without losing all my data?

I've recently lost an old Windows XP PC which I have been using for several years and had my entire iTunes library and iPhone history. I have since purchased a new Windows 7 PC and installed itunes onto it.
Is it possible for me to sync my iPhone onto the new computer without losing any of the data on my phone? I don't have any music stored on my iPhone so that's not a problem, however, I do need to save all the current Contacts, Messages, E-Mails and Photos that are on the iPhone. Any help is much appreciated in this matter.
    - JD.

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your computer, your phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Outlook, Windows Address Book) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • How do I back up iPhone to new Mac without losing all my music?

My old MacBook Pro died and I bought a new one.  i need to sync and back up my iPhone to iTunes on the new Mac, but my friend says that since there is no music in the Mac, it will erase all the music on my iPhone and I will lose it.  A lot of my music was not bought on iTunes, bu ripped from my CD's or bought elsewhere. There is no music on my new Mac.  I hope I can sync the iPhone to the new Mac and all my music will be copied to the Mac. Is this possible?  Is there a correct way to do it.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss.  To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Media syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Upgrading from CC to CC 2014 without losing Actions & Filters

I'd like to upgrade from CC 14.2.1 (64 bit) to CC 2014, but I can't afford to lose my Actions & Filters since I spent 18 months creating and installing. I don't mind moving them, but I need to know where they are and where to move them to. Or anything else that helps me upgrade without losing them all.

I strongly recommend you save your actions in .atn files and keep the files in a safe place.  Do this by clicking on the actions set name, then clicking the icon at the upper-right of the Actions panel and choosing Save Actions.  This protects you from the loss of information from Photoshop preferences (which should not happen, but it's always good to be safe).
If the installation process somehow does not automatically copy your actions to the new version when it is installed, you can always load them from the .atn files yourself.
Regarding what you're calling Filters, I'm assuming you're referring to 3rd party plug-ins.  Since Photoshop CC 2014 is a completely separate and new application, you'll simply have to reinstall them into the new version.  I recommend not trying to copy them from one version to the other, though that can be done in a pinch - you just have to be sure you get all the related files together (some of which may not be under the Plug-ins subfolder).
Keep in mind that if you don't uninstall Photoshop CC 14.2.1 (and I recommend you don't), you can continue to use it in a pinch, until you get Photoshop CC 2014 fully set up and are confident in it.  As I mentioned, Photoshop CC 2014 is a completely separate install.
