How do I upgrade my 800MHz PowerPC G4 eMac?

What RAM modules do I use? I found a few different kinds and am not sure of the difference.
Kingston 512MB PC2700 333MHz DDR SDRAM Memory Module KTA-G4333/512
Kingston 512MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM Memory Upgrade KTA-G4133/512
Lifetime 512MB SDRAM Memory Module 10274-512
Also, is there any way of upgrading the processor? I saw something online about someone who upgraded their 800MHz to a 1.33GHz. Is this realistic?
Is there anything else I can upgrade? I work with lots of hi-resolution RAW files and multiple applications at once and need to speed up my work. I also want videos on the net to work better and less choppy.
Here are the details of my computer:
Machine Name: eMac
Machine Model: PowerMac4,4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.4.9f1

Welcome to Discussions, inspirenyc,
Your machine has two RAM slots, of which each can hold 512Mb of RAM, so the maximum amount in total would be 1024Mb combined.
You have likely 2 X 128 modules installed. Originally they came with 128 Mb so maybe you or someone added another 128Mb along the way.
The type of RAM for your eMac is PC100/133 SDRAM 168 pin 512Mb. which is relatively inexpensive now. The second one you mentioned would be suitable.
However, eMacs are not very upgradable. You can increase the RAM or put in a larger Hard Drive or upgrade the CD drive to a superdrive, but the processor cannot be replaced. Your reference to seeing online someone changing their processor from 800Mhz to 1.33Ghz was not from changing the processor. It was from altering the circuit board with a soldering iron! No job for the feint hearted. This kind of unconventional 'rewiring' could lead to destroying the eMac altogether.
If you are handling a lot of large RAW files you may benefit from a larger Hard Drive as a lot of that data is swapped out to disk. Replacing a Hard Drive is a bit involved but with care and patience it can be done.

  • How can I upgrade PowerPC PowerBook G4 to intel?

My brother's old PowerBook G4 was recently passed down to me since he passed a couple weeks ago. I am in college now and thought it was a good idea to use it for school. I found alternate programs that don't need intel processors; however, some programs required for my classes need intel processors. I was wondering if I can upgrade my new PowerPC's hardware to upgrade to later software without losing important data and a way that doesn't cause problems. Is it even possible the change the hardware?
    Specs:
    1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 processor
    1.25 GB RAM
    Thanks in advanced.

I'm currently using Safari as my web browser. Decided not to use TenFourFox, or old versions of Firefox and Chrome.
I've been looking for a Frostwire download, but the latest one I was able to find was 4.18.1. It only stays at "starting connection" when my internet connection is perfectly fine. Any later update will ask for Java update 1.6, which apparently isn't compatible. Does Apple even allow those kind of programs?
And as for document creating programs, I use OpenOffice. It's not an exact mirror of MS Office, but it gets the job done. Especially for a college student with a low budget.
    I am confused...
You need Intel to run an internet browser and OpenOffice?

    1) Which one will run best?
    2) How do I upgrade?

It's probably cheaper to buy a new printer & sell the existing on on ebay.

  • How do I upgrade my 2009 Macbook from Leopard 10.5.8 to Maverick?

One discussion indicated that the Aluminum 5.1 model from 2009 should be compatible with Maverick. App Store screen states that one needs 10.6.6 or higher to download from App Store. So how do I upgrade?

Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

How do I upgrade 10.5.8 to leopard or snow leopard?

To get information about your Mac click the apple (screen top left) and select About this Mac. This will give you your OS number. Then click More Info to see which Processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above as they are Intel only. You can discover more about various Macs at: http://www.apple-history.com/
The OS numbers and names are:
    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
    OS X 10.7.x - Lion
    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion
If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that.
You can buy Snow Leopard here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
For details about upgrading this to Lion or Mountain Lion see:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A
In each case check that your Mac complies with the requirements.
If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of the page.

  • How can I upgrade my MacBook3,1 to switch from mobel me to icloud?

I have a MacBook 3,1. Version 10.6.8 snow leopard.  How can I upgrade to Lion so I can switch from mobile me to icloud?  I use a iMac 10.10 OS X Yosemite for all of my work, but going overseas, and was hoping to update the MacBook to use while I'm there.  I could use icloud to access all I need.  Could someone please give me suggestions?  It could also use more memory, and speed.
    Thanks,

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
There are workarounds if the 867MHz is the only hangup...

  • I am currently using Tiger 10.4.11 how can I upgrade to Panther?

Hi  I have a iMacg5 intel,  currently using Tiger 10.4.11 how can I upgrade to  10.5? Thanks in advance, Rene.

There is no iMac G5 Intel,
"G5" is a PowerPC processor and "Intel" is well a Intel processor.
    10.5 is Leopard
10.6 is Snow Leopard whichh only runs on Intel processors)
10.7 is coming out soon and doens't run on 32 bit Intel Core Duo processors.
You can find out exactly what machine you have by going to the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More information.
Look for something like "iMac 1,2" and post what you see here.
You might have to have someone from a Mac friendly computer shop come take a look at your machine, set you up, backup your files and set a backup plan in place and so forth.
Problems with third party software could arise, and you might be forced to upgrade software. All that will have to be investigated before you proceed with a operating system upgrade.
Don't want to be caught later paying for upgrades you might not be able to get.

    *Flash Player for PPC Macs*
Adobe's last release of Flash Player for PPC Macs was in November, 2010 with release 10.1.102.64 Subsequent releases are for Intel based Macs only.
To check your installed version of FlashPlayer - http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about
    To update you should download:
Flash uninstaller: [http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/865/cpsid_86551.html#prob1=uninst,os=m10.6,] Make sure you get the right one.
Flash installer 10.1.102.64 [http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp_10.1.102. 64_and_9.0.289.0_archive.zip]  Open the archive to reveal yet more archives and multiple files. Select: flashplayer10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg
    To install:
    1) Run Disk Utility and verify your hard drive.  If the hard drive reports errors then it will need repairing first (another topic).  If it verifies, run Disk Utility's repair permissions.
    2) Back up your hard drive, ideally to a bootable clone. A bootable clone will allow you to restore your hard drive to its original state should something go wrong.
    3) Quit all applications to ensure nothing is actively using Flash. You can even do the next step while booted to Safe Mode to make sure.
[Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393]
[What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564]
[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
    4) Run the uninstaller application. Adobe says, "Adobe recommends that you restart your computer before you install a different version of the player."
    5) Run the installer application from the .dmg file you got from the second download.
    6) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions on your computer. This is important when installing anything from Adobe.
    7) Restart your computer.
    Notes:
Adobe installs things all over your computer. Simply dragging a file or two to the trash won't ensure you have uninstalled all old file components.
