How do I upgrade my iMAC OS X v10.5.8 to Snow Leopard?

How do I upgrade my iMAC OS X v10.5.8 to Snow Leopard?

And it is very easy to install in contrary to earlier system versions. Don't forget to do the Software updates for the system as  you might not get the latest version on the disc. Best is to download the 10.6.8 COMBO update (1 Gb) first before updating.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's an Intel Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

  • How do i upgrade my OS X version 10.5.8 to Snow leopard so i can then install mountain lion?

I M TRYING TO INSTALL MOUNTAIN LION BUT THE SITE SAYS I HAVE TO HAVE SNOW LEOPARD FIRST. I CAN'T FIND THE DOWNLOAD FOR
    . CAN YOU HELP?

There are several ways around this. You can go to on Amazon and buy snow leopard. Update to 10.6.8. Then use The App Store that comes on 10.6.8 and upgrade to 10.8.
This is assuming you have a iMac that can go to 10.8.
Note. You are posting in the wrong forum. You should be posting this in Mountain Lion, not OS X Server.
Other way around it is, if you have another computer that is on 10.6.8, download 10.8.  Extra the disk image out from the Installation o mountain lion. Clone image to a USB flash drive.
Do a full backup of 10.5.8 to external HD such as a clone of it. Then boot up with the USB drive on 10.8. Format the internal HD. Then install 10.8 on it. transfer data back with migration tool after you boot back up.
The easiest way would be just getting 10.6 DVD
    Good Luck

    As mentioned, no 10.6 for you,but 10.5.x
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

How can i updgrade my iMAC OS X 10.4.8 version to 10.7 ?? I'm not so computer literate but my computer is considered old and it is in desperate need of the latest upgrade. Also, how much is the cost for upgrade?  Many thanks to you Apple folks...

    You don't require Leopard.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • How do I upgrade my iMac from OSX10.5.8 to Mountain Lion?

How do I upgrade my iMac from OSX10.5.8 to Mountain Lion? I'm guessing I have to first purchase Snow Leopard? Is there anyway to download or upgrade online?

First, determine how high you can upgrade.
SL requires an Intel processor and 1 GB RAM, though more RAM is better.
Lion requires Core2Duo processor and 2 GB RAM, though more RAM is better.
Mountain Lion has higher requirements: http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Also review applications that do not work under Lion or ML to see if you will lose critical functionality: http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Research first, as too many have discovered only after the upgrade that things are lost to them.
You can buy SL or Lion from 1-800-MY-APPLE.  SL is a disk ($19 single disk license, $29 for 5-user license).  Lion will be a $19 download code to use in App Store that you get with SL.

How do I upgrade my Imac to two TB hard drive start to finish?

Those are definitely good drives. The OP lists his iMac as a 2011 unit, so it should have a Thunderbolt port on it. If money isn't an object, he could probably put together a RAID unit using Thunderbolt. I think OWC is selling an Thunderbolt hub of some sort. He could do all this, get good performance, and not even need to bother cracking the case. It's a lot easier and convenient working on an external drive than it is having to service an internal drive. He just needs to steer clear of some of the low power/backup drives.
Just my two cents, of course.

Back up your data, install at least another 1GB of RAM(you should install another 4GB) in the machine, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004; some other installed software may also be incompatible.

You stated; " I have been successful with My Power Mac "
A Power Mac is incapable of being upgraded to Mavericks. It is a PPC Mac which can only run versions of OS X up to 10.5.8 and no higher. Any version of OS X higher that 10.5.8 requires an Intel processor to run.
Does the iMac meet the hardware requirements for Mavericks?

  • I upgraded my Mac from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  I did have Microsoft Office for Mac 2004 in my applications and now get a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported."

I just upgraded my MAC from OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard and then to Mountain Lion 10.8.2.  When I try to access my Microsoft Office for MAC (2004 edition) files I am getting a message "can't open Office because Power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I access all of my save Word documents?  I just want to be able to retrieve all of my documents that were in Microsoft Office for Mac (2004).  If I purchase the newest version of MS office for Mac from Apple will I be able to retrieve my old documents?

Use any number of free alternatives to your nearly decade old version of MS Office.
    Consider
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
    NeoOffice (free)
    OpenOffice (free)
In addition to the above I also recommend Apple's Pages ($19.99). I use OpenOffice and Pages and have been completely Microsoft - free for years. Life is better without Microsoft.

Not possible. You need to update to v10.6.8
Click your Apple menu > Software Update
Or update using the this download > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
    Then restart your Mac.
