ios3 is installed on my iPAD (1). How do I upgrade to ios4, since itunes has only ios5 ? I don't want to upgrade iPad to ios5 as I am afraid it might slow down or make my ipad unusable ? Thanks in advance for your input.

Might I try to reassure you that updating to iOS 5 is perfectly safe? The early bugs of iOS 5.0 were mostly worked out in 5.0.1, and that is the only version you can download as Apple only offers the latest version that is compatible with your device.
I have updated 4 devices to iOS 5 with no problems.

I would be ideal to have a step by step approach I can follow.

    To update
Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes

A 2G can only go to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10.X. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 or later. With 1OSX 10.4.11 you can only go to iTunes 9.X which gets you as high as iOS 4.1
A 3G to 5.1.1  Requires iTunes version 10.5 or later
A 4G to 6  Requires iTunes version 10.7 or later. That requires a Mac with OSX 10.6.8 or later

  • How to upgrade iphone 3gs ios3.1 to ios4.1/4.3

I have been trying to upgrade my iphone 3gs recently..
Unfortunately Itune keeps popping up the message box and stated that "There was a problem downloading the software for the iphone. The network connection timed out", It also required me to make sure that my network settings are correct and connection is active.
I am sure that all the network connection is working as I am still able to do other internet browsing..
I thought it was because my itune version was not updated to the latest version, so I downloaded and installed the latest itune version 10. I tried to upgrade my iphone after the installation was done and it still popped up the same message box again!!!
Can someone tell me what on earth is going on, please?? I am having problems at updating my other apps and also downloading some new apps which need ios4 to support them all....
I appreciated for any suggestions or solutions here, thanks a lot!!

You cannot. Only the 5g model.
See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

  • Upgraded to ios4, confused how to used ipod feature now?

after recently installing the new software im now confused as to how i can use my i pod. When i go into it the 'songs' it says i have none, all my music is still available to view as albums but you seem to have to create playlists from the 'songs' section. i used to just go onto 'all songs' press shuffle and let it play through but now i only have the option to do 1 artist at a time.
if anyone could help me out that would be great.
    Thank you
    Helen

Try resetting the iPhone with it being disconnected from the computer. Hold down the sleep/wake button and home button until you receive the apple logo and then let go.
This happened to me with photos.
    Hope this helps!!

  • HT5012 How do i upgrade ios3.1.3 to ios4.5 or 5.0 on ipod touch 1st gen

    I cant upgrade past 3.1.3

That's correct; you can't. iOS 3.1.3 is the last version that first-gen iPod touch wil run. If you need to run a newer version of iOS, you'll need to buy a newer iPod touch.

  • Since I upgraded to ios5 safari can't handle the java setting on an internal work web site. When i click on a field it appears to be uncalibrated. How can I add another browser or go back to ios4 till a fix is found?

My current work around is turning java on and off, but all fields are still not active. Please advise. Thank you.

JavaScript is a rather flexible language and not always totally cross-browser, so what works with one browser may not work with another, or even in some cases a revision of one that worked before. Absent corrections to the web site, if the site isn't working on your iPad now, you will indeed probably need a different browser. There's no supported way to downgrade your version of iOS, but there are other web browsers available in the iTunes Store, including Opera Mini and iCab Mobile. One of those might be happier with the JavaScript on your web site. Opera is free, so you might want to try that first.
    Regards.

  • How can I update my iPhone 3gs to iOS4, after iOS5 came out?

I am still running iOS 3 (1.3) on my iPhone 3GS and I'm happy with it - but all the new apps requires iOS4 and now I'm sick of this. I want iOS4 (and not iOS5, cause it will drain my battery as far as I've understood).
How can I update my iPhone 3GS in a normal way to iOS4, through iTunes or another easy way? I have never jailbreaked an iPhone so I don't know too much about "backdoors" into my iPhone.

The only Firmware in the iOS 4 series that Apple is still signing for the iPhone 3GS is 4.1. So you could restore  to 4.1. You will have to download the 4.1 IPSW from Apple, and then install it with iTunes, Option Click Mac or Shift Click Windoz, on the Restore Button and then select the 4.1 IPSW on your computer. The current iTunes may give meaningless Errors, I doubt because you are Upgrading. But if Error Message is given you will have to search the Web for ways to Exit Recovery.

  • Advice for people upgrading to iOS4

I hope this little note will be helpful to people doing their first iPhone OS upgrade (maybe a reminder too for some of us who've been round this before).
Apple releases at 10.0 (or thereabouts) in Cupertino. You won't see it before hten anywhere else. If, for example, you're in the UK, that's about 18.00; in most of Europe, 19.00, and so on.
The first couple of days after Apple posts a major iPhone OS update can be a little fraught. The first couple of hours can be very fraught. The servers are loaded to capacity with download requests, and the forums are full of queries and worries. If you see this, read it and maybe it'll make the process a bit smoother.
The 2 key things are: take a backup first, and allow plenty of time.
Backup: most iPhone OS upgrades go OK, but a small proportion don't. Your backup is your safety net in case you are among the unfortunate (very) few. If you have a problem, it'll be painful, but if you have a backup, at least you know you won't lose your data. Use iTunes to do a full backup; make sure you sync your data to wherever you sync it.
Some people don't use iTunes or MobileMe or Gmail or Exchange to sync their contacts, calendar and so on. To those people I say please consider doing this at least once, just to keep your data safe. Once synced, make a backup of the synced data on your computer, again just to be safe. There have been cases where people, as a result of issues in the upgrade, have lost the data - this will help to avoid that.
Allow plenty of time: the download can take a long time. I don't know how bigh OS4 is, but OS3 was around 275MB. The servers will be rammed, and download speeds might be slow. There might also be interruptions in the download. You can use/unplug the phone during the download so don't feel as if you have to sit there watching it. Actually, I'm convinced that, if you watch it, it goes slower, all scientific evidence to the contrary.
The installation takes time: half an hour isn't untypical, sometimes longer. And when that's done, you'll have to sync all your data fresh - if you have a 32GB iPhone full of goodies, that could take a loooong time.
The moral is: *do not try to do this in a hurry*. We've seen many cases where people started the process just before they were about to go somewhere and needed their phone, and then got stuck. Interrupting the upgrade is very likely to cause problems, up to, in the extreme, bricking the phone.
Ideally, wait a few days: the servers are quieter and more reliable, and many common issues will already have been raised and resolved. I know how keen we all are to be early adopters (me included), but it really is more rational to wait (if less fun ).
Some apps may not be completely compatible with iOS4. There will be upgrades but they may not have got into the Store yet. If you have any apps you absolutely depend on, check wth the developer or the Store whether it'll work on iOS4. If you're unlucky in that respet, don't give the developer a hard time - they haven't had that much time to adapt to some very significat changes in the OS.
Finally, if you do run into a problem (and I really hope you don't):
    - Search before posting your problem: there might already be an answer, and having many different threads on the same problem makes it harder for the people looking for answers and for the people trying to help too.
    - Please remember, the people here are users, not Apple employees. If you need help directly from Apple, use the contact info on the support pages to find it. You'll get plenty of help (I hope) from your fellow users here, but please remember everyone's a volunteer, and don't give them (us?) a hard time if you don't get what you're after when you want it.
    - If your iPhone has been subjected to non-Apple-standard software manipulation (i.e. j'broken), *you won't be able to get any help here*. The terms of use of the forums don't allow it.
Remember: *take a backup and allow plenty of time*
OK - that's it. Happy upgrading one and all

Thank you, those instructions are great! My one question is how to make a backup of my backup? I sync through iTunes on a Windows 7 laptop and my contacts and calendar are in Outlook. I'm assuming that this upgrade wouldn't effect anything in Outlook so I'm not worried about that part, but what about my apps? After I run the upgrade I am assuming it will then just sync with iTunes and as long as I haven't done anything stupid, I should be good to go. Is that not a correct assumption? I have upgraded entire operating systems with no trouble, including from Win 95 to XP, XP to Vista, and Vista to 7. After those upgrades, especially 95 to XP, I'm assuming this will be a piece of cake! Anyway, I'll stop rambling here. LOL! Any suggestions on how to actually make a backup of my backup would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
