How do I use a firewire drive as my start up disk?

I have a 12" powerbook that I am trying to use with an external firewire drive as my start up disk. aI install 10.5 easyily but then when I try to start up from that drive it will not recognize the drive as a Start up disk. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong.

First, what Disk Utility tells you is correct, that SMART indicators aren't supported on an external drive. Nothing is wrong.
I might try this approach .... get SuperDuper at http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html, download it to your internal hard drive, then use it to copy your internal drive to your external drive. Make sure the option to make the external drive bootable is checked. When that's done, reboot holding the option key down, and choose the external drive to boot from. That should work with the firewire connection.

The partition table is corrupt. Boot into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime) and partition the drive with the default options (GUID format, one data partition.) The operation will destroy all data on the drive, so you'll have to restore from a backup.

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will. However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive. There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure. If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.

How to boot from external firewire drive

Apparently my internal HD on the powerbook has died as it repeatedly gives me the black screen "restart" message and re-install of system software fails.
I have an external bootable firewire drive, which is a "carbon copy" of my iMac, however, it's SnowLeopard not Leopard, so is there any way I can use the firewire drive to boot off of on the G4 or any other suggestions?
Also, does anyone know what Apple typically charges to replace the internal drive in the PB G4? I looked at the video for doing it myself and that is not an option for me.

The black screen restart message, or kernel panic, can be caused by a number of causes, most which are typically hardware-related, and many times a problem with memory. Try re-seating the memory to see if that makes a difference.

If you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, find the first one that should say 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert it and reboot while holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. That might give you some additional information on any hardware issue(s).
You can't use your Snow Leopard bootable drive on the Powerbook, as Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based system.
If it turns out it is a hard drive issue, be aware that Apple will keep your current hard drive as a trade in on a new drive. Some people have private data on the hard drive and have a concern with it leaving their ownership (even if the drive isn't working).

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

depending on which model of G5 and OS installed will depend on whether a key command will work
alt at start up may work, if it does not, use the start up disc setting in;
apple menu > system preferences > system > start up disc
of course, the second drive must have a compatible OS installed for it to be able to boot.

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Leopard installer DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Insert the USB flash drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
Release the key when the boot manager screen appears.
Select the icon of the USB flash drive and click on the arrow button below the icon.
When the installer finishes loading follow the onscreen instructions.

There are several ways to do exactly this.
If you partition the external drive, you can use one partition for TM and the other for anything else.
Even if you do not partition the drive, you can safely store other data in folders on the drive. Just to not use the folder that TM creates for anything. And it's best not to put files directly on the drive, in my opinion, but use folders for storage.
Just remember that whatever you put on the drive takes up room from TM and when the drive gets nearly full, TM will start automatically deleting older files from it's own folder.
I have my Tiger clone on my external TM drive in a separate partition and everything works fine.

How do i use additional hard drives for application installation

I have close to a terabyte of drives on my new mac pro and would love to use one of the other hard drives to install applications on- especially my windows applications- like solidworks. However every time i try to install something to my mac it wont give me a choice of where to put it. Same is true under parallels- so I keep on filling up my mac HD and the other 3/4 of a terabyte is unused!!!
I called apple care and they said that Apple doesnt recommend using other disks- where did they find him?

Without repeating what eww has already expressed, it seems, in the first place, you need to give yourself adjust yourself to how Mac OS works, since by your own admission, you are new to Macs. When I use a PC, as I have to from time to time, I always wish that it worked as my Mac does. Of course, I just have to figure how to work with what I see as its limitations to get the job done. The learning curve gets less steep as we move along in the process.
Your work pattern and needs seem to be quite different from most mac users I know. This is neither good or bad, but it does mean that your needs are specialized. You seem to work with especially large files, for example. So your installed volume becomes crowded more quickly that most of the rest of us. However, eww's suggestion that you put some or all of your data on another HDD works for others in the same way, although in different situations. For example, some people with older macs can only install OS X on a partition of less than 8 GB, as they work with a limitation where they have to install OS X on the first 8 GB of the HDD. Thus they have to have most of their data on a separate partition.
You noted, +I have looked through mac HD and havent found " data" i can move any where yet+. May I suggest that you move your entire Documents folder to another drive, since that is where all your data would normally be stored. Another option would be to get a larger HDD. I don't know how large your present HDD is, but you can max out the size of your internal HDD. Or you can keep your working documents on your internal HDD and move the rest for storage on an external HDD. You know best what will work for you. What I am trying to say is that you have options, and I feel sure that you will get it figured out.

When I download a movie from iTunes the cover art disappears. I try get info and add the art, it doesn't show up. So it's just gray. It opens and plays fine. Apple can't figure it out. It's an nas drive. When I use a firewire drive I get the art

When I download movies from iTunes to my NAS drive, I don't get the cover art. It shows up while its downloading, but when it's finish it disappears. If it has an iTunes extra the cover art is there. I tried get info and add the cover art, it never shows. Regardless of how I add it. Funny thing is, if I download the same movie to my external firewire drive, no problem its there. I've called Apple with no success. I've even tried copying the movie with the art from the firewire drive to replace the file on then NAS drive I still loose the movie cover art. I also tried several times to re download it, no luck. Any ideas? I'm out of ideas.

Do you have any videos/movies in the video app?
In iTunes if you right click on the video and select Get Info and go to the Option tap what Media Type is shown?

Natively Windows can read and write to NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT while the Mac can read and write to FAT32, exFAT, and MacOS Extended.
Option 1: You can purchase driver software for Windows to allow it to read and write Mac's MacOS Extended or you can purchase a driver to allow the Mac to read and write to NTFS.
Option 2: you can format the hard drive for exFAT and use it with both Windows and the Mac without purchasing any special drivers. (Obviously the 4GB file size limit is why you don't want to use FAT32)
