How do I use a quadrature encoder as an external clock (PCI 6229)

Hello, ( a similar post has been placed on DAQ forum apologies as I did not know best place)
I have a PCI 6229 M Series data acquisition card. I want to use a quadrature encoder to be the external clock driving the acquisition of a number of signals. I have set up reading 24 signals each time a clock pulse is received using the DAQ assistant and set my external clock to pin pfi8 (I think) this is then connected to an encoder output. This works well enough until the encoder is run too fast when it appears I am either missing pulses or getting bounce.
How can I set up to clock using a quadrature encoder? I have seen a number of questions on this forum regarding quadrature encoders and reverse counting but not on using them as an external clock.
Basically I want to have the stability and "bounceless" nature of using two outputs from a quadrature encoder whilst still using an external clock. Is this just a case of configuring controls to certain pfi's? If so how is it done?
Any help or pointers would be helpful. So far I have managed very nicely by simply using the DAQ assistant and the interface it has would suggest that if configured for a certain pfi pin I could actually still use it.
Thanks in advance.
Kevin

Hi,
Well I've had alook into this for you and I'm not quite sure I understand what you are looking for.
Is it possible for you to phone back in to support?
The reason you are seeing bounce at high speeds, or indeed loss of points, is due to the sampling rate that you have set up.
What you will find is that the trigger will start an aquisition of a number of points at a certain rate.  If your sampling rate is too low then you will not finish that sample batch before the next set of samples is recorded.
It is possible to use an external clock into a trigger or digital line, however this will limit the number of samples you can take to the speed of your encoder.
If you increase your sampling rates, and then configure a start trigger from a single input from the encoder you will be able to record a number of samples after a rising/falling edge.  (Set the clock as an internal clock)
Hope this helps

  • Using a Quadrature Encoder as a clock at best precision possible

    I would like to use a Quadrature encoder as a clock for analog data acquisition. Currently, I am using only one line of the encoder and the clock "ticks" when the line goes high. This is only one quarter of the precision the quatrature encoder is capable of, since it can count from both lines when they go either high or low. I was wondering if I can get the counter to send a pulse everytime it increments and use that pulse train as my clock. This would increase my analog data acquisition frequency four fold.

    Hello,
    It is not going to be possible to count both rising and falling edges with a single counter. You could route the A phase and B phase of your encoder to different counters to capture the different edges on the signals, but that will not help you in using this encoder as your clock source. What you may want to invest in is a quadrature clock converter. You can find more information on this at the following tutorial:

    How Do I use my time machine as an external hard drive?

    Time Machine is software that allows a Mac to backup to a Time Capsule or other hard drive, so I think you are asking about the Time Capsule here, correct?
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/
    How do you plan to connect the Time Capsule to your network, or is it already connected and configured?
    When you have it configured on the network, you can use the Finder to copy/paste or drag/drop files from your Mac to the Time Capsule disk.

  • Learning how to use a quadrature encoder

    Here is my first post....
    My question involves use of NI cDAQ 9411 and a Unimeasure TTL encoder.  This is all very new to me, actually my first endeavor. First off, I am wanting to veryify my pinout connections, I have tried a few configurations based on the help topics I have reviews.  I am unsure if the Ao and B0 channels need to be connected?  I am using the encoders to build up a deflection / load measurement system.  I have seem mutltiple ways to hook these things up.  (The pinout of my devices are in the attached PDF document)
    Also, I am curious if there are any tutorials specifically for the NI9411 and an encoder.  I have been trying to use signal express, but I keep getting "Clock" errors.  I have not got  to the point to actually see counting or measuring when I pull on the encoder string.  Perhaps there is a good tutorial explaining the use of clocks?
    Thanks!

    After many hours of searching and help I found a solution to the issue.  The issue had to deal with providing an external power source to the 9411 modules.  THe 9411 apparently could not power my 5 volt encoder.  Fortunalty, this was an easy fix.  Thanks!
    My next question is in regards to using multiple encoders with my chassis.  I have been spending the day sorting though the various posts trying to sort through the best way to make this happen.  I am unsure if I should by using "Tasks" or if I should be using the Express DAQ Assistant.  I am using cDAQ 9172 and the 9411 modules in slots 5 and 6.  I would like to aquire continous information from the encoders.
    I would appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks! ~J

  • How to change disk space for encoding assets to external disk drive

    My laptop has only 1G left and I can't seem to burn a video with iDVD 6. An error message says: "Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets."
    How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?

    1GB left? Wow - I'm surprised you aren't having trouble with the OS!
    Normally, OS-X likes at least 10% of your hard drive kept free for OS use.
    You REALLY need to fee up hard disk space before you have major problems.
    As for: > How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?
    As far as I know, you can't.

  • How do I use my time capsule as an external hard drive?

    I am trying to use my time capsule as an external hard drive but can't figure it out... can anyone help me out?

    1.  Run AirPort Utility
    2.  Click on your Time Capsule
    3.  Click Edit
    4.  Click on the Disks Tab
    5.  Click on Enable file sharing
    6.  Choose the way you want to control file sharing access, whether it is by the Time Capsule password, an independent disk password, or accounts for different users.
    7.  You should then be able to access your Time Capusle drive from Finder.

  • How can I use an iPad Mini as a external display for any new Vixia Series Camcorder?

    Hey Everyone,
    I've worked with Vixia's previously and am looking to purchace one of my own, a G20 or G30 most likely.
    I'm very interested in using an iPad Mini as an external display and wondering if anyone has had luck with this.
    Cheers and thank you!

    do you mean you want to play your videos from your Vixia camcorder on your iPad mini? Well, that may be a little difficut. Because the video came from your camera may not be a very friendly format.
    Here you can try install VLC on your iPad mini , VLC should support AVCHD (*.MTS) natively.
    If this can't work, then find yourself a free converter;
    Handbrake, Any video converter ,ffMPEG etc.
    If this can't wrok , or the output quality is jerky.
    try this one free mts/m2ts converter from pav, I used it and considered to update it.

  • How can I use my Time Capsule as an external Hard Drive for my PC?  My PC can't find it.

    Hi, I just bought this Time Capsule for my home.  I've got the internet access for all my devices (Mac, iPad, PC, iPhone) and I've got the Mac backup working through Time Machine.  I'm supposed to be able to use the Time Capsule as an external drive for my PC, but I can't figure it out.  My PC doesn't recognize the Time Capsule as a Network Place.  I called AppleCare, but they don't have all the answers for "PC issues."  They tried to get me to Map a Network Drive, but my PC popped up a window asking for a Username and Password.  It looks like something similar to when I VPN into my company network from home.
    I'm using Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Download and install the airport utility for windows.. it isn't strictly necessary but the bonjour service makes life easier.
    The request for username and password is correct. Username is whatever you like.. but windows needs it.. so admin.. being the common router one.. password by default is public unless you changed it.
    Now to get the TC to work properly..
    1. The names should be SMB compliant.. by default they are wrong.. use short names, no spaces no special characters.. pure alphanumeric. That is for TC name and wireless names.
    2. Wireless passwords should also be same use WPA2 private.
    3. In the disk sharing page.. manual setup.. put in the windows workgroup name.. ie WORKGROUP.. this helps the discovery process.
    4. In the same area, turn on the guest account to read and write.. not necessary but helps with later versions of windows particularly.
    5. Access the drive by using the direct IP address. ie in Windows Explorer address bar, \\10.0.1.1 (or whatever IP the TC is at).

  • How I can measure frequency of TTL signal without external clock?

    Hello,
    I want to measure frequency of TTL signal using PXI-6254 or PXI-6713, without using external clock.
    Frequency will be up to 100kHz. How I can use internal counter of 20MHz or 80MHz?

    Hi Yuta K,
    You have not stated what software you want to use for this measurement, but in case you're using LabVIEW, please go to the Example Finder (in LabVIEW go to "Help >> Find Examples").
    In the Example Finder, you make sure the "Browse" tab is stil selected, and than you go to:
    Hardware Input and Output >> DAQmx >> Counter Measurements >> Digital Frequency
    Here you will find some good examples of measuring a digital frequency with 1 or 2 onboard counters.
    If you need additional information, please let us know!

  • Is it possible to read digital data using an external clock (PCI-6259 M)?

    I’m using a NI PCI-6259 M Series card and trying to write my program in VC++6.0 using the functions in the DAQmx driver.
    Question1: Not all functions listed in the NI-DAQmx C Reference Help seems to be supported by my NI-card, where can I find information about which of the functions that are supported?
    Question2: I want to read data from a device that clock out data on the falling edge of a clock signal. The clock signal and the data signal are routed to two DIO terminals on the NI-card. The question is if it is possible to read data using the clock as a sample clock? See two code examples below that doesn’t work. In both cases 10 samples are read at once, even if the external clock is not present.
    Example 1
    // Create tasks
    Status = DAQmxCreateTask("", &m_ReadTrimTask);
    // Set up read task
    status = DAQmxCreateDIChan(m_ReadTrimTask, "Dev1/port2/line0", "", DAQmx_Val_ChanPerLine);
    status = DAQmxCfgChangeDetectionTiming(m_ReadTrimTask,"Dev1/port2/line6","Dev1/port2/line6",DAQmx_Val_FiniteSamps, 10);
    // Read data
    int32 sampsPerChanRead, numBytesPerSamp;
    status = DAQmxReadDigitalLines(m_ReadTrimTask, 10, 10.0, DAQmx_Val_GroupByChannel, result, 10, &sampsPerChanRead, &numBytesPerSamp ,NULL);
    Example 2
    // Create tasks
    Status = DAQmxCreateTask("", &m_ReadTrimTask);
    // Set up read task
    status = DAQmxCreateDIChan(m_ReadTrimTask, "Dev1/port2/line0", "", DAQmx_Val_ChanPerLine);
    status = DAQmxSetSampTimingType(m_ReadTrimTask, DAQmx_Val_SampClk);
    status = DAQmxSetSampClkRate(m_ReadTrimTask, 1000.0);
    status = DAQmxSetSampClkActiveEdge(m_ReadTrimTask, DAQmx_Val_Falling);
    status = DAQmxSetSampClkSrc(m_ReadTrimTask, " Dev1/port2/line6");
    // Read data
    int32 sampsPerChanRead, numBytesPerSamp;
    status = DAQmxReadDigitalLines(m_ReadTrimTask, 10, 10.0, DAQmx_Val_GroupByChannel, result, 10, &sampsPerChanRead, &numBytesPerSamp ,NULL);

    Hello Magnus,
    Thank you for contacting National Instruments.
    "Question1: Not all functions listed in the NI-DAQmx C Reference Help seems to be supported by my NI-card, where can I find information about which of the functions that are supported?"
    The best place to look for this information would be the M Series Help Manual. There you can find the features of your PCI-6259 and what operations it supports.
    "Question2: I want to read data from a device that clock out data on the falling edge of a clock signal. The clock signal and the data signal are routed to two DIO terminals on the NI-card. The question is if it is possible to read data using the clock as a sample clock? See two code examples below that doesn’t work. In both cases 10 samples are read at once, even if the external clock is not present."
    Look at the "ContReadDigChan-ExtClk_Fn.c" example project which ships with the NI-DAQ driver. This is located at: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-DAQ\Examples\DAQmx ANSI C\Digital\Read Values\Cont Read Dig Chan-Ext Clk.
    You will have to make some minor modifications to convert this to a finite acquisition, but that is simply a matter of changing the "sampleMode" parameter of the DAQmxCfgSampClkTiming() function. You will also have to route your clock signal to a PFI line and specify which line in your code.
    I hope this helps.

  • How do I use my Time Capsule as an External HD?

    I want to use my Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive that any computer on my network could access and save files to. How do I go about setting this up. Currently when I try to drag files to it I get an error message. Any help would be great appreciated. Thanks

    So I had my TC set up properly, but when I would try to drag and drop an excel file to it I got an error message saying that it couldn't complete the task due to an unexpected error and gave and error code of 8058. I tried opening the file and saving it to my TC and it worked. Since doing that I can now drag and drop files onto my TC...including that original file. Just thought I'd post this in case other people read this.

  • How can I use the data pump export from external client?

    I am trying to export a bunch of table from a DB but I cant figure out how to do it.
    I dont have access to a shell terminal on the server itself, I can only login using TOAD.
    I am trying to use TOAD's Data Pump Export utility but I keep getting this error:
    ORA-39070: Unable to open the log file.
    ORA-39087: directory name D:\TEMP\ is invalid
    I dont understand if its because I am setting the parameter file wrong or if the utility is trying to find that directory on the server whereas I am thinking its going to dump it to my local filesystem where that directory exists.
    I'd hate to have to use SQL Loader to create ctl files for each and every table...
    Here is my parameter file:
    DUMPFILE="db_export.dmp"
    LOGFILE="exp_db_export.log"
    DIRECTORY="D:\temp\"
    TABLES=ACCOUNT
    CONTENT=ALL
    (just trying to test it on one table so far...)

    ORA-39070: Unable to open the log file.
    ORA-39087: directory name D:\TEMP\ is invalidDirectory here it should not be physical location, its a logical representation.
    For that you have to create a directory from SQL level, like create directory exp_dp..
    then you have to use above created directory as DIRECTORY=exp_dp

  • How do I Use Time Machine to back up external HD

    I have an iMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.7). I have a 1 TB USB external hard drive directly connected to the iMac that I use to store about 300 GB of pictures and videos (I will call this one AUX). I have another 1 TB USB external hard drive (I will call this one BACKUP) that is also directly connected to the iMac. I am using this one with Time Machine to back up my iMac hard drive. All connections are direct USB, no WiFi. Both external drives are formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Time Machine works fine with the iMac hard drive but will not back up the AUX external drive. The Time Machine system preferences window has an "Exclude these items from backups" display that shows only the BACKUP external drive (grey so not selectable). It does not seem to see the AUX hard drive. How can I get it to back up AUX???

    Uhh, well, I guess I have to qualify my question above. Upon using a third party file search program, I find that the contents of my AUX external drive are being backed up by Time Machine. But, when I use Spotlight to search my Time Machine backup HD, I get nothing, which is why I thought it was not working right.
    So, why is Spotlight not giving me results on my Time Machine BACKUP external drive???

  • How do I use time machine to backup to external drive on other machine on network

    I have 2 x McPros, 2 x iMacs and 2 x MacBook Pro all integrated in the same home network. I have a DroboPro Network which can only be recognised as a Shared device by one MacPro only. There are 2 DroboPro 8 Bay RAID devices attached via Firewire to one MacPro.
    With Mavericks how can I ensure that
    a. The networked Drobo can be seen by all computers as a shared device (it is connected via Ethernet to central Gigabit switch)
    b. That, failing the networked Drobo sharing, how can I ensure all computers on network will always have access for Time Machine backups using the DroboPro attached via Firewire to the one MacPro.
    Many thanks, it's probably right under my nose.
    Darrin

    Time Machine will only back up internal and directly connected external drives. It will not back up a network attached storage device.  You'll have to use some other software to back up the NAS.

  • How can I use my time capsule as an external hard disk?

    Hi ,
    I hav en Airport Extreme 3 TB. I have done the setup. And it seems to working well. But I also want to use it as an external hard drive. When I go finder Shared folder I could not see Data folder in it. I have this screen. How can I see that folder.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    I count 36 characters in your TC name.. This is not good.
    Please reduce the name to somewhere less than 10 characters if possible.. 20 at most.
    No spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    See C9 here for why the present name is bad.
    http://pondini.org/TM/C9.html
    Also if your wireless name is the same.. change it to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric as well.
    Then manually mount your TC disk.
    In finder use top menu, Go/Connect to server.
    Type in AFP://TCname.local (TCname is your new short name. Local is the default domain).
    Or it can be even better to use IP if that doesn't change.. ie TC is in router mode.. and by default is 10.0.1.1 then
    AFP://10.0.1.1
    Then apply and you will be asked for the TC disk password.. default is public but whatever it is you set. Make sure you save it in your keychain.
    The TC data share should then mount.
    And small comment about using the TC for files..
    TC is designed for Time Machine. It is not a NAS.. it has no backup.. it is slow to spin up and fast to spin down. Using live libraries will result in corruption and loss of your entire library in the case of iphoto.
    Please be very careful. Do not jump in and think very carefully. Time Machine cannot backup any network drives including the TC. You are going to have issues with backup if the TC is only location for your files.. it is unsuitable for this. CCC can backup to another drive.. but where will that be.. USB plugged into TC you will experience new visions of pain and suffering as the backup takes almost as long as digestion by a Sarlacc.
    Pondini has some pointers here.
