How do I use an Airport Express as a "range-extender" for Airport Extreme?

I bought an Airport Express with the intent of using it as an "extender" for my Airport Extreme, but I find no paper that describes how this is done. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks and cheers, Veit

Thanks for the info. Try this to see if it will do the job for you:
_On your AirPort Extreme (AEBS):_
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the *Wireless tab* below the row of icons
Your *Wireless Mode* should already be set to “Create a Wireless Network”
Make sure there is a check mark next to “Allow this network to be extended”
Note the setting for Wireless Security as you will need this for the next setup on the AirPort Express
Update to save changes
_On the AirPort Express (AX):_
Hold the reset button in on the AX until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly
Temporarily, move the AX near your computer and connect a short ethernet cable from your computer to the AX
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup.
Click the *Wireless tab* below the row of icons
*Wireless Mode*….should be set to “Extend a wireless network”. If you don’t see this choice, hold down the option key when you click on the selection box
Wireless Network Name…the name of your main AirPort Extreme network should appear as a choice. Click to select it.
Place a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security….exact same setting as your AEBS
Wireless Password…exact same password as your AEBS
Confirm Password
Click the Base Station tab to assign a name and device password for the AX, set time zone, etc.
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes if you wish
Update to save settings. You can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location.
For further reference, Apple's instructions for the "extend" setup appear on pages 43-44 in the Apple AirPort Networks Guide.
Please post back on your results.

  • How do I use my airport extreme with my FIOS router?

How do I use my AirPort Extreme base station with my FIOS Router to extend my network?  I have hard disks connected to my AirPort Extreme and would lik to access them.

Probably can't answer all your questions - but.... I use a Linksys (wired and wireless) router as my primary entry point for FIOS. I use a Time Capsule and an Airport Express as a common wireless connection. So I have two visibile wireless networks and use them both depending on where I am in the house. Both the TC and AEx can be seen either wirelessly or wired from the entire network. Note - the Linksys provides all the DHCP - you set the apple routers as "bridge mode."

  • HT4145 How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? I get a message saying it cannot be extended. Thank you. Arup

How can I use an Airport Extreme to act as a Range Extender for an Alcatel One Touch Y800Z WiFi modem/router? As we live in a rural area and our landline broadband speeds are awful, I have moved on to a 3G provider in the UK (EE/Orange) and set up the wireless modem which is working very well with an iMac. I have an Airport Extreme base station which was previously connected with an Ethernet cable to the landline router, and two Airport Express stations as Range Extenders. I would now like to use the Airport Extreme and the two Express stations to extend the range of the Alcatel WiFi device. I have tried automatic and manual set up with the Airport Utility but at the crucial step for selecting a network to extend, although the WiFi device is recognised, I get a message saying it cannot be extended.
Thank you for any help you can provide.
    Arup

This is a problem with a lot of cheap end wifi hotspot like devices.. sometimes you can just swap the sim out to a real 3G wireless router.. that is a better approach IMHO than wireless repeater ever will be.
    In the meantime..
Have a go with the suggestion.. place the express as wireless bridge. With a computer connected to the wifi from alcatel unit.. (I am amazed Alcatel still are in domestic market.. I thought they sold out). Set the express to join the wifi.. you do this in the airport utility.. old one is easy.. but in v6 you have to trust to luck so to speak and hope the auto setup works.. tell us if you have trouble.
With the Express bridging.. you can then plug it by ethernet into the TC.. which will be in router bridge..
    ie
You can then run the connection from wireless or ethernet on the TC.. and it will relay back to the alcatel for internet.. all a bit dodgy but who knows.. it may give you what you need.
Wireless repeater is never particularly reliable in my experience. I would avoid it if possible.

  • HT1515 Can I use Air Port express as a signal extender for SKY Broadband router in UK?

Can I use Air Port express as a signal extender for SKY Broadband router in UK?

You are going to have to turn OFF Wifi on the Sky router device so its just a modem.
String an Ethernet cable off of the Sky router to an Apple Airport/Time Capsule device and have that create a stable WiFi network.
Using WDS protocols you can now add additional Apple Airport expresses as needs be to extend the Wifi signal area.
In theory you should able to extend an existing network however inter-operability between differing manufacturers is flaky at best.
Caveat using extenders Will degrade the performance of your network.
So its going to be more expensive - Need Two Airport devices and you my need support in creating the network (you may have to log in to the Sky provided routers advanced settings in the Java Control Panel and from a web browser to turn off features such as Wifi and IP addressing)
You may be better contacting Sky as they may actually have a compatible network extender (BT certainly do for their Home Broadband routers) available.

  • (How) can I use my Airport Extreme to send FLAC files/iTunes to my stereo?

(New to this topic.) Is it possible to use my Airport Extreme Base Station to send FLAC and iTunes music files to my (ParaSound P3/A23) stereo system wirelessly?
    If so, how?
(Not interested in iOS devices doing this - just, effectively, in using my 'mid-2011'  2.7 iMac (10.7.3) as a music server
    TIA!

Yes, add an AirPort Express and convert FLAC to Apple Lossless and iTunes will be able to play them. VLC will not help since you need iTunes to connect to the AirPort Express and VLC will not work with iTunes.
There may be an exception to this but I've never tried it. You could try using AirFoil to connect to the AirPort Express and play your FLAC files that way but I have no guarantee it will work. AirFoil seems very flexible so it may prove to be a solution for you.
I'm not familiar with the Sonos Bridge/Connect system so I cannot comment on the quality. I understand that it is comparable to using the AirPort Express but locking at the price it seems a more expensive solution for your needs.

  • How do i use the airport extreme to extend my wireless network

How do i connected my airport extreme up to my existing network so that it can extend my wireless through out the house ??
Can it be done wirelessly or do i need an ethernet cable thats about 10m ?
    Keith

The AirPort Exteme can "extend" your existing wireless network (using wireless only) if it is being provided by another Apple router.
If your current main router is not an Apple product, then you will need to plan to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an Ethernet cable.
Post back for more information if needed.

  • HT5022 How do i use my airport extreme to extend my wireless network, or make the signal stronger

I have a wireless modem/router and want to use my airport extreme to strengthen the signal throughout my house...how do i do that?

Plan to establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from one of the available LAN <-> ports on your modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Extreme. Locate the AirPort Exteme in a central location in the general area where more wireless coverage is desired.
Configure the AirPort Extreme using AirPort Utility to "create" a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name, same exact wireless security settings and same exact password that your modem/router uses.
Finally, the Extreme must be configured in Bridge Mode to operate correctly with the modem/router.
To get everything in the proper sequence on the network....once the Extreme is configured, power off the entire network for a few minutes. Then start the modem/router first and let it run a minute by itself. Then start the Exteme next the same way. Continue starting devices the same way until the entire network is back up.

  • How can I use an AirPort Extreme to expand a normal Wi-Fi router range?

I used to use my AirPort Extreme as my router, connecting it to an old modem I had. Recently, I had some problems with that modem and had it changed. Now, the new one is also a router, so I decided to use it instead of the AirPort Extreme. However, I don't want to let such an expensive router not doing anything, so I decided I would use it to expand the range of my new router/modem. Is it possible to expand the range of a non-Airport Extreme/Express router, like mine? I tried configuring it to "Expand a network", and it was even in "Bridge Mode", but even with those configurations, it's yellow light kept blinking and AirPort Utility said that it the AirPort Extreme wasn't being able expand the network, and told me to check if the normal router was on and if AirPort Extreme was within its range, and the answer is an obvious yes for both (I can assure you it's within range). Am I doing something wrong, or is it simply not possible?

Is it possible to expand the range of a non-Airport Extreme/Express router, like mine?
Yes, if you connect the AirPort Extreme to one of the LAN <-> ports on the modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection.
Extremely unlikely if you are asking about having the AirPort Extreme connect wirelessly to the modem/router and extend or repeat the signal in that manner.
The reason for this is that Apple designs their routers to only the extend the signal from another Apple router wirelessly.

  • How can I use an airport extreme to extend my wireless network?

I have a Verizon FIOs router with both wireless and ethernet capability. I also have an airport extreme base station, which is currently connected to the Verizon router by Ethernet and provides wireless to a MacBook in a distant room upstairs. Practically, I have two wireless network now. I have two G4 Sawtooth, which do not have wireless PCI card and require ethernet connection for internet. One of them is in the upstairs study room and connected to the Verizon wireless router by Ethernet. The other is in an downstairs room has not wireless connection.
Can I relocate the airport base station to downstairs and connect it to the Sawtooth there for receiving wireless from the Verizon router and broadcast further to its wireless network? If so, how do I set up the airport station downstairst? If not, I know that I have get a PCI wifi for the Sawtooth downstairs.
    Your advice is greatly appreciated.
    Robert

Can I relocate the airport base station to downstairs and connect it to the Sawtooth there for receiving wireless from the Verizon router and broadcast further to its wireless network?
Sorry but no the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) will not wirelessly connect to the network provided by the Verizon FiOS router.
What you could do is get another AEBS, an AX, or a Time Capsule and place that downstairs. Then use that device to wirelessly connect to the wireless network provided by your current AEBS. If your current AEBS is not 802.11n capable then you would need to use WDS to make this happen. One bad thing about WDS is that each WDS link cuts your affective wireless bandwidth in half.

I no longer have any disks for my airport extreme (its pre-time capsule)... how can I connect my windows machine to it in order to get to the internet?

You can directly download the AirPort Utility for Windows from Apple Support here.
Once the AirPort Extreme is properly configured for Internet access you can connect your PC to the Extreme either by a wired or wireless connection.

  • How do I use the Airport Extreme feature.

For a while I have used a Netgear WGR614 wireless router, which worked fine (with a cable modem).
At this time I have a DSL modem, and for the life of me I can NOT get this Netgear router to work anymore. The period for free phone support has expired, every call for support is now at least $ 40.00 so I am going to buy something else.
This is available in my Powerbook:
    * Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme
    * Wireless Card Locale: USA
    * Wireless Card Firmware Version: 404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
Is there anything I can buy from Apple that would make it possible to be wireless with this?
I'd be gratefull for any kind of information.
    Best regards,
    Mildred Denney.

  • How do i add my airport extreme to my DSL WIFI Modem to expand my network

I have a DSL MODEM with WIFI. It replaced my Airport Extreme as a router.
How can I use the Airport Extreme in conjunction to expand my wifi service through out my house.
    AIRPORT EXTREME MODELA 1354
    Modem is a Qwest PK5000z

    MAC BOOK PRO 2011

Ok, the Airport Utility Program NOW shows the globe, a green light next to the word internet
below, there is a now a yellow triangle next to AirPort Extreme with an ! in it. """the messase to the right says
Diveic Not Found:Airport Extremem was previously part of your net work Check that is still in range of you network
(it is it's right next to the PK5000) it's plugged in. Forgetting this device removes it from this network."""
    AND NOW
Bob, I can now see where I missed the fact that to do this the Airport had to be Wired_via ethernet,
I was looking for it to be a boost wirelessly, not tethered.
I’m not at liberty to modify the living space I am living in, holes and such and have cable run up exposed.
Again, ignorance on my #1 status. This has been very informative but I do see where I can't accomplish what I wanted to do, have a booster in another room wirelessly.
I think what I need to do is restore the Airport to factory setting and sit on it, not literally.
I can't thank you enough for taking all this time with me. I trust you understand what I wanted and you did your best to provide.
So I guess that's it for now.
I'll look to you in the future, you really know your stuff

  • I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and a Netgear VPN Switch for wired connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect?

I am using an Airport Extreme for wireless and also have a Netgear VPN Switch (FV5318) for internal wired ethernet connections.  How do I get the two networks to connect to each other?

Tesserax, I would like to keep the Airport Extreme in nplace before the Netgear FVS318 switch because I am using all of the 8 ethernet outputs distributed to 8 differerent locationsl  This way I can just use one of the LAN outputs from the Airport to feed the FVS318.  Here is what I think I am hearing you say:
Tne reason why the wired and wireless devices are not communicating is because the FVS318G is also a DHCP server and in conflict with the AEBS.
To remedy the situastion here is probably what I need to do in order:
    1. Change the LAN IP Address of the Netgear FVS318G to be the same subnet of the Airport Extreme.
    2. Then, disable the Netgear FVS318G as a DHCP server.
    3. Make sure the ethernet cable from the LAN port of the Airport Extreme connectis to the LAN port of the Netgear FVS318G.
    4. Restart everything.
Can you provide me the steps I need to take to get the right IP addresses from the Airport Extreme to put into the Netgear to fix the conflict?  I have the Airport Utility.  I also have two airport express hot spots, and two Apple TVs in addition to computers attached to the 8 ethernet lines.
    Thank you.
