How do I use imac or mac mini as media server for Beoplay A*?

We are contemplating buying a Beoplay A* and and appropraite Mac configuration to support it. I'd like to load all our musc into Itunes from CD's, as well as stream from things like Pandora. I'm having trouble fnding any helpful documentation.
How does htis work? If the mac is in one room, and the beoplay in another how do we connect them, and what's the GUI / remote control?
s anyone actually using a Beoplay A8?

You can enable file sharing on the computer you want to use as a server in System Preferences.
On your other computers, you can connect to server in the Go menu of the finder and type in the server's name plus a .local extension. If you name your server computer "Server" then type in server.local and login with an account on the server.
Otherwise you can buy OS X Server from the App Store but that's more complicated if all you want to do is share files.
Hope this helps.

  • Having trouble using my airport extreme as a media server for my ps3--can anyone help?

I'd like to set up my apple airport extreme with a USB seagate drive, and use the drive as a media server for my ps3.  I have successfully connected my seagate drive to my airport extreme.  I have successfully transferred a sample movie to this seagate drive.  My laptop is easily able to find the drive and is able to play the sample film from the drive.  How can I turn this drive into a media server?  I'd like for my PS3 to be able to read movies off the network drive and play them.  Help??

    Welcome to the discussions, DanSwiggsD!
If you have a non-Apple device as your main router, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme has almost no chance of compatibility with your main router.
If you do have an Apple router as your main device, please post back with your model number and we'll let you know how your devices should be configured.
If you don't have an Apple device as your main router you have a few options to connect the xbox:
    1) A pair of ethernet powerline adapters could be used if you did not want to run a regular ethernet cable from your main router to the xbox.
    2) The new AirPort Express 802.11n model does have a feature called Proxy STA which should allow it to receive a wireless signal from any wireless router and allow the ethernet port to be enabled.

  • Can I use Mac Mini as a "server" for a MacBook Pro and iMac?

I want to develop a simple system for accessing my files from multiple devices.
I heavily use iTunes (190 GB), iPhoto (120 GB) and iMovie (30 GB, but want to do more when I get time).  Additionally, I store lots of old videos on circa 10 portable hard drives (1 TB each), which I access occasionally.
The family use all this content and we currently have a MacBook Pro and are considering buying a new computer - either a new MacBook Pro or an iMac. We also have iPads, iPhones etc and a Time Capsule. We use wireless fibre optic broadband.
I don't really want multiple iTunes and iPhoto libraries.  We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
As there is seemingly too much data to store on iCloud, we need to find an alternative solution.
    My possible solution is:
    (1) Load my master iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie libraries ("iTPM libs") on a Mac mini
    (2) Buy a new MacBook Pro or iMac (probably doesnt matter which)
    (3) Link the MacBook Pro(s) and iMac to the Mac mini to access iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie and the master iTPM libs
    (4) Plug the portable hard drives into the Mac mini whenever I need to access the video content stored on the portable hard drives
    (5) Add "users" to the system (i.e. family members), in the same way you would access a shared server at work
    (6) Over time, buy more computers to access the system in the same way
    My questions are:
    (1) Is this system feasible?
    (2) If so, can I edit the iTPM libs from the MacBook Pro or iMac?
    (3) If so, what happens if both the MacBook Pro and iMac are accessing the libraries at the same time? Which takes precedent?
    (4) Would this solution be significantly slower than having separate libraries on the different computers?
    (5) Is there an alternative approach that might work better for my needs? (which are, after all, relatively straight forward).  When I went to the Apple store they were unsure!
    Many thanks.

[…] We want all our music and pictures in single master libraries that we can all access and update.
The "update" portion of this is where your problems will arise.  You'd be better to consider your proposed system initially in terms of content "consumption", before getting into the nitty-gritty of editing shared content.
iTunes has the Home Sharing feature built-in, which solves the content consumption issue.
I don't know anything about sharing iPhoto libraries, but this KB article looks useful.
As for iMovie, I think there are two things you want to do: share the raw data (sound effects, music, photos etc.) that are used to create iMovie content; and share the finished results.  Is that right?  I'm not sure how you'd go about doing that, but if you clarify your aims in this regard, it'll help the next person who comes along.
When it comes to updating content, such as adding new music to iTunes or iPhoto, I'd suggest you do it through the Mac mini directly.  This seems the least problematic solution.  You wouldn't necessarily need a dedicated display for the Mac mini - you could use remote desktop or VNC or what-have-you.
As for speed: doing anything across a network is always going to be slower than doing it locally.  But, it probably won't matter for content consumption (though if you're all watching different movies at the same time the drives on the server may struggle, and the wifi bandwidth might be tight).
I hope this represents a good initial response to your query.

  • Using iMac and Mac Mini together to share screen and data

I may buy a Mac Mini in addition to my iMac 27" (Mid 2011), mostly so that I can use it for slide show presentations via a digital projector. But I don't have a separate monitor (or suitable TV), so I wouldn't be able to use the Mac Mini other than with a projector. Not a good idea. So I backed away a bit.
    TDM Mode
Then I found that I could use an iMac screen as a monitor if I connect the two via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable in Target Display Mode, TDM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924). A short cable costs $35.
Then I thought about those times when Photoshop is tying up my computer for hours while I batch process heaps of images (you can't use Photoshop while it is batch processing), and I wondered: why not jump across to the Mac Mini during those times?
I store all my data on external firewire drives. Nothing on the OSX drives. This leads me to a few questions. Assume I have the Mac Mini connected to my iMac in TDM via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable.
    Ques 1
What is the best way of being able to access my data files (on external firewire drives connected to the iMac) via the Mac Mini? A scenario might be:
    I've started a batch process on the iMac which ties up Photoshop and much ties up;
    I switch the screen to display the Mac Mini;
I want to access my data on the firewire drives, drives that the iMac is already accessing.
    Ques 2
Can I use the thunderbolt connection to not only transfer screen data, but ordinary data?
    Ques 3
Or should I run an ethernet cable between the two and set up a network?

One question, how does this affect syncing to iTunes?  Will it recognise the iPhoto drive on both computers (depending which one has the drive at that time) if I sync photo albums to my iPhone and iPad?
iTunes will always sync with the last iPhoto library that has been used on the computer. If you make sure, that the drive has been connected, before you launch iTunes, it will work, like Old Toad said.
Also, if I do it this way doesn't it become vulnerable due to not being connected at all times to time machine?
if you use the drive with the library the mainly on your iMac, you could exclude it from the TimeMachine backup of your Laptop. Keep it connected to the iMac, when you are not using it on the LapTop.
What would be the process if I only wanted to do this periodically and wanted to keep the main library on the iMac.  Could I work on the drive on the macair and then save it back to the iMac?  How do I do that without duplicating the files?  If I just select copy and paste, will it only overwrite the changed files?
You would have to copy the entire library back and forth again and again, or use iPhoto Library Manager, to merge the changes into the library on the iMac. It would not be an easy workflow.

  • How to use iMac as remotely accessible home media server

First time poster, and thanks in advance for any help that any of you might be able to provide. -- Josh
I have a mid-2007 iMac, several AppleTVs and Apple mobile devices, and a 2014 Macbook Pro coming at the end of the week (more detailed info below).  I have a roughly 1 TB library of movies, which are currently housed in an external hard drive attached to the iMac.  When I'm on my home network, I'm able to stream all the movies to all of the AppleTVs, iPhones, and iPads, using iTunes and home sharing, with almost no problem.  But, my family would like to access our movie library remotely, when at the airport, visiting family, etc.
I've researched various options, and am having a hard time parsing through some of the more technical information and figuring out what setup would work best.  It seems to me that although I can't use my iMac as a second display for the new MacbookPro because of technical limitations on the iMac, I might still be able to use the iMac as a remotely accessible home media server.  Running Plex on the iMac has been suggested, but I keep hearing conflicting information on whether the AppleTVs are compatible with Plex, and I've had trouble successfully forwarding ports several years ago when I played with Plex briefly.  iTunes/home sharing is just so easy in terms of setup and reliability between Apple devices, in my experience.  I looked into buying an AirPort Time Capsule, since I was looking into upgrading my router to support 802.11ac anyway (advice on that too?), but was told that neither the Time Capsule drive nor any drive attached to it would be remotely accessible.  Back to my Mac seems like it might work for me to access my library remotely when using the MacbookPro, but not any of the mobile devices (which are more important to the kids), and I'm not sure what advantage a NAS drive would have over using the iMac (although this is where it starts getting a bit technical for me).  Looked at OSX Server also, but not sure how that would interface with whatever additional components I need to get.
Thank you in advance for any help.  I'm sure people have figured out a way to access their media libraries remotely, but for some reason I can't find a straight answer on how.  I've included additional technical details about my setup below.  Thanks again!!
    iMac, 20-in, Mid 2007, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, OS X 10.9.4, 250 GB storage
    Macbook Pro w. Retina, 13-in, 2014, 2.6 GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L SDRAM, 128 GB PCle-based Flash Storage
    Iomega HDD, 2 TB
Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router, Model No. WNDR3400v2
    AppleTV, 3rd generation (x3)
iPhone 5, iPhone 4s, iPad (2nd gen), iPad mini w. Retina

Not really recommended to do what you want as the perfomance will be undesirable and make the experience lousy at best. If you have content you want to watch remotely then simply copy it to a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro and then bring one of the AppleTV's with you. Then you can stream directly from the MBA or MBP to the AppleTV on a remote TV. We did this on our last vacation, loaded a bunch of movies on my MBA, threw one of the ATV's in the suitcase and when we got to our hotel simply connected it using the hotels Wi-Fi and connected the ATV via HDMI to the TV and we were in business.

  • Use Mac Mini as media server

I am looking to switch out my old HTPC for a Mac Mini, but I would like to save as much money as possible and keep the options I have with my HTPC. Right now I have a 250GB system HDD and a 1TB data storage HDD. How does it work to use an external HDD as media storage that is served to another device (like a PS3) for viewing?

    Charles:
You can have your iPhote or Aperture libraries on the Mac Mini, and you can sync them with ypur iPhone. Notice that pictures taken from the iPhone are not added to your iPhoto or Aperture libraries unless you import them inside iPhoto or Aperture (the iPhone appears as a camera).
In iTunes you can choose wich iPhoto or Apertures events you want to copy (not sync, it is just a copy) to your iPhone. When you do that, a new Album will be added to your iPhone.

  • Mac Mini dual core or Mac Mini quad core server for normal use ?

    Hello
I am looking to replace my desktop work computer from my 2011 i7 quad core 2.0 MBP for a Mac Mini because it was actually made for desktop use and my minidisplayport - dvi adaptor just broke ( I think because to many unplugs and plugs from the laptop to the monitor ) .
I work in Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Aptana, Netbeans, open 20 + tabs in chrome, firefox so I need a bit of performance
I have no use for Mac OSX Server, I just want to be at least as fast as my MBP. I can see that the 999$ Mac mini has the same processor as my MBP ( 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 ) but no dedicated video card. Also, the 800$ Mac mini has a video card BUT just a dual core - 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 .
What do you think I should get ? I don't play games, I have windows for that anyway. Would the dedicated video card make much of a difference ? ( does photoshop or mac use it much - openCL etc. )
    Thanks!

You might also consider the Apple only available Mini
which has a 2.7 GHz i7 dual core which has dedicated
graphics. Also, all the 2011 i7 processors (Sandy Bridge)
    are hyperthreading.
As for dedicated graphics, they are really only needed
for high end gaming or 3D rendering apps.  It will
make no difference with the software that you mention,
as they are more CPU intensive.

  • Mac mini as a server for video editing?

Hi I have bit of networking experience as well as being a mac user for over 20 years. I am however at the moment stuck on finding a solution to our current workflow.
We are a small production company and have the following:
    (1) 2013 iMac
    (2) 2013 Macbook Pro's
    (1) Belkin thunderbolt hub
    (8) Firewire HD's
    (2) Thunderbolt drives
    (1) Thunderbolt Raid
Here is what I need to do.
We currently have a home office that has been hard wired directly to our Fiber connection. We have a DIA line and 5 static IP's. I have setup a switch in the office and running a direct connection from the fiber to it. From there each machine (including the hub) is connected. Each machine is setup with a static IP and can access the drives via the hub.
My problem is the speed of connection to the drives. Its extremely slow for anyone plugged in besides the iMac. My thinking is to purchase a Mac Mini and set it up as a server with a Pegasus Raid attached (http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?m=192&region=en-global&rsn1=40& rsn3=47) that can be accessed by all the machines on the network.
Is that all that I would have to do to be able to get each machine (and users from other locations who remotely login) access to the footage at a high rate of speed on transfer?
I hope I've worded this correctly and that someone can help.

I heavily use iTunes (190 GB), iPhoto (120 GB) and iMovie (30 GB, but want to do more when I get time).  Additionally, I store lots of old videos on circa 10 portable hard drives (1 TB each), which I access occasionally.

  • Mac Mini as Media server

    Hi,
I recently replaced my Mac Mini G4 for an Intel duo 2 Core version. I also have a TimeCapsule (router) and a MacBook. Currently I have Itunes and iPhoto Libraries on both my MacBook and the Mac Mini (and share files with the Homesharing option). Is it possible to just have the libraries on the Mini and use that library on my MacBook? I use the library on my MacBook to sync my iPhone and Ipod and the Mini to play my music ans movies.
Any ideas what the best setup is? Or is there a link to a walkthrough or something like that?

This document describes how to do what you want with iTunes:

  • Mac mini as media player for HD content ?

    hi
i am looking for the best affordable solution for HD projection.
i will be shooting and editing a 18min video, probably on sony xdcam ex1 editing on my g5 fcp 6 system. i don't want to down-convert for projection and am considering to buy a mac mini and project a .mov file compressed with h264. any experience ? can quicktime project full resolution, full screen and in loop ? since i am not burning to dvd, can i use higher than the allowed bit-rate in order to get the best possible quality ? if i connect the mini to the projector using dvi to hdmi, will i be losing quality ?
any suggestions and comments will be much appreciated...
    nir

A DVI to HDMI connector requires a dual link DVI end for some or a single link for others. I don't know what the mini uses.
One is 24 pins and the other is 18 pins.
If that is what you are using, then make certain you get the right one.
and if this is a DVI, remember you need separate audio outputs for sound.
A DVI cable won't carry sound

Considering the app for the iPhone is for iOS, you may have problems using it on the Mac (Mac OS X)
    Two different operating sysems.
From iTunes for the touchpad app:
Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 5.1 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

  • Using OS X Lion as a Business Server for a Windows & Mac Enviroment

Hi there, I am debating on using OS X Lion (on a Mac Mini) as a server for a small business.  I have some lingering questions that I need help with.
If I am using OS X Lion as the mail server,
Does it provide any kind of online/web access (similar to OWA)?
Does it work with Mac Outlook 2011?
Will it work with Windows Outlook?
Will the messenger work with a Window's machine at all?  (i.e., remote employee on a Windows laptop.)
If I am using OS X Lion as a file server,
Can I restrict access to certain folders?
Is there a way to allow clients access to certain folders (similar to SharePoint)?
    Is there any FTP capabilities?
How secure is OS X Lion?  I work in a very contentious / data sensitive field.  The information we will have is highly confidential and highly sought after.
In the end, I am looking for a cost effective solution for a small group of consultants that deal with high profile matters, need to quickly and easily communicate and collaborate from both Windows laptops and MacBook Pros (90% remotely).
    Thanks for the help!

    And this is my problem.
    In windows terms:
I want to assign a drive letter to a network drive, and have that be a machine-wide assignment, that is activated during bootup, and is visible to all users and services.
I can do that for an arbitrary partition that is physically attached to the machine.
I cannot seem to do that for any partition that is mounted over the network.
    The problems are:
    1. It doesn't map for every user,
    2. It doesn't map for services that run when a user isn't logged in
    3. It generates annoying inconsistencies in what programs see what.
Is there really no way for an XP box to use a file server? Even a microsoft file server? (if there is, how do I make my mac os with samba look like a real microsoft file server).
Annoying tidbit: The "conncet at login" information is stored in the user profile; if you rely on that, then the user profile cannot be stored with the rest of the user's personal files. If it weren't for that, I could probably live with a work around.
(2 to 1 someone will say "Xp Professional can do that trivially" and tell me to upgrade. I thought XP home was supposed to support home and small office networking, and I thought that included a single shared file server.)

  • Mac Mini 10.74 Server - Now Reboots Randomly

I have been running a Mac Mini OS X Server for last 3 months without a single error.  I have 2 of them.
Yesterday, I upgraded to 10.7.4 (from 10.7.3) and today, one of my servers has crashed twice.  Both times, it has rebooted (no Monitor attached to Mac Mini).  It is out of service for 10 mins or so.  This concerns me, as it never rebooted before 10.7.4.  Also, other Mac Mini OS X Server doesn't have an issue.
    Anyone else seeing this?
I usuallly wait a few weeks before installing software updates on servers - but I decided to yesterday (Sunday), becuase I had some time, stupid me.
