How do I use iTunes Match to restore my iTunes library?

I tried to move my entire iTunes library to an external hard drive in order to free up space on my laptop's hard drive. I followed a step-by-step guide on doing this. The process didn't go to plan though and now I'm in a situation where a good two thirds of my iTunes library is unaccessable. It has an exclamation mark next to the individual tracks. The music isn't on the external drive and it seems to have corrupted somehow on the laptop hard drive.
I subscribe to iTunes Match and that is up to date.
Is it possible to delete my iTunes as it exists right now and then reinstall it using iTunes Match to reestablish my iTunes library as it should be?
How do I do this?

The issue is not related to the external drive. iTunes Match has difficulties matching tracks ripped fom CDs because they may differ slightly from the versions on sale in iTunes. You can try the match again. Otherwise do a search of this forum. There are already many discussions on this subject here that may help you.

  • How Do I use my External Drive for my iTunes Library without adding anything to my Mac's HD?

    I have a new MBP and have transferred all of my music off my old pc (250+ gigs) to a Lacie 1TB thunderbolt external drive.  How do I use the external as my primary itunes library with out using any of my Mac's HD?  I'm new to mac so I have a few more questions...

    2. will this work or will there be extra steps every time I disconnect and connect the external (other than ejecting)?
    3. Will I be able to access it remotely / home sharing?

    There are several ways to do exactly this.
    If you partition the external drive, you can use one partition for TM and the other for anything else.
    Even if you do not partition the drive, you can safely store other data in folders on the drive. Just to not use the folder that TM creates for anything. And it's best not to put files directly on the drive, in my opinion, but use folders for storage.
    Just remember that whatever you put on the drive takes up room from TM and when the drive gets nearly full, TM will start automatically deleting older files from it's own folder.
    I have my Tiger clone on my external TM drive in a separate partition and everything works fine.

    Yes. You can sync an unlimited number of iDvies that you control to one iTunes library/account. If using the same iTunes library on the same comutr just make sure that yu go to the ap. music and other pane for the iPod in iTunes and select sycn selected items. Not the the whole library.  That way each iPod can have it own contents.

    unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
    i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
    unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
    factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
    connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
    create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
    login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
    add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

    You can then log into your account on it via the Store > Sign In menu option (on iTunes 11 on a PC you can get the menus to show via control-B) :

    if they are still stored in iCloud, turn contacts off under settings>iCloud, then turn the back on and elect the merge option.  if that doesn't work you may have to remove the account from the device, and sign back in

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
    Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
    See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
    When you get it all working make a backup!

    AAC is Advanced Audio Coding.  Basically it's a format that sounds better than MP3 but doesn't take up as much space as a lossless format (like you'd have on a CD).  More than likely you've had that encoding turned on when you ripped your music into itunes (it's the default encoder).  Therefore your LG phone won't play them.
    You need to turn off the AAC format by going to the iTunes menu, Preferences, General (at the top), then clicking the "Import Preferences" button.  Change the AAC Encoder to MP3 Encoder.  After that you'll have to make MP3 copies of your songs by right clicking them and selecting "Create MP3 Version."  You'll get a copy of the song that should transfer to your SD card and have MP3 encoding.  Hopefully your phone will play that.

    I installed this plug-in into iTunes which is supposed to organize your music collection by filling in the dates, genre and any missing album artwork, but I was not satisfied with the results. I uninstalled the plug-in, but now I was wondering if I could use Time Machine to restore my iTunes library back to the way it was before running the plugin. I tried using Time Machine to revert my music library in my Home folder, but that did not seem to restore the data back to the way it was. Perhaps there is another folder in which iTunes stores information that I need to revert? The plug-in's documentation offered no assistance in this matter.

    Yes, you can retore your iTunes Library using Time Machine but since you are running Lion you need to use Lion Recovery to reinstall the Mac OS X, not the install discs that came with your Mac.
    Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

    You have old computers authorized that you are no longer using more than likely.

    You can then restart the authorization process with each current device.

    Everyday I get to work and open iTunes. Everyday the iTunes Match logo next to my library is constantly working and never stops. The only way I can have access to my iTunes Match library is to "Turn Off iTunes Match" and "Turn On iTunes Match" immediatly after. It checks libraries and then everything is available.
    Is there a reason and a way to have my iTunes Match to work as soon as I open iTunes?
    The requirements are met:
    iTunes: 10.6.3 (25)
    OS X: 10.6.8

    Thanks for the tip, unfortunately that did not work for me.  I turned off match and let it sit for over 3 hours and music never disappeared.  I made sure to turn off auto-lock so the iPhone/iPad didn't go to sleep and neither device ever cleared out the music so I just restored from iCloud backup.
    Now the other thing thats strange is I still have autolock turned off and both devices are sitting on the music app and on my iPhone I have the cloud icon going with the status bar and took 3 hours to get it complete the first time and then someone called me and foolishly answered the phone and then it started all over again.  On my iPad I don't see the cloud icon but i have the spinning wheel going in the corner for almost 24 straight hours now.  I have all my music/artwork back but none of my playlists so I am going to let both these devices sit until the spinning circle stops. 
    I do have a large library of just under 25,000 songs so maybe thats why its taking so long but I haven't had this issue before iOS 5.1 and iTunes 10.6.
