When we purchased a new car last year it came with an iPod tether. I decided to give it a try and purchased an iPod for it. I was so impressed that I decided to do away with my collection of 300+ CD's, 400+ vinyl records, and 100+ cassette tapes. It took me ssix months to transfer everything to iTunes (the vinyl was especially slow, and I had to purchase an interface preamp to facilitate the process). I next began collecting iPods - one for each of our three cars (two of which had to have tethers installed), and one for each room where we wanted to listen to music (for this we purchased several iLIVE iPod docks). I then began transfering my music collection from my computer to the iPods. At this point I ran into problems with syncing, resetting, and generally uncooperative iPods. When I noticed that iTunes insisted on calling all my iPods by the same name, when I had named them separately, I began to worry, and tried to contact Apple to ask what might be happening. Unfortunately, my last purchase was six months and a week ago, and Apple no longer wants to talk to me.
Today I began checking this forum and found the article about multiple iPods on one computer. So ... I have to make six copies of my library, remember which library goes with which iPod, and remember to switch to the appropriate library before syncing. Whatever happened to that "Apple makes it easy" attitude?

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually

Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate iTunes Music folders and libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that any or all of iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library:

Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. I,m having trouble unsynching my phone from one computer in order to synch it with a new one. I beleive that part of the problem is that I originally set the phone up with one Apple ID then changed to a new ID. Any thoughts on how to work around this? If not how do I erase the new Apple ID in order to make the switch from one computer to the other? this problem is also affecting my ability to make full use of some apps.
Switching Apple IDs and trying to synch with two computers is the problem.
The apps you purchase or download are always tied to the Apple ID that was used to purchase them.
Content synced from one computer will be lost when syncing to a different computer.
I suggest you make sure you have a backup of all the music, photos, and documents on the computer you plan to sync with from now on. Once you have done that you can use the Settings app to erase your device and start over.
Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings
Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings
Then setup your device again as if it was new. Plan to use one and only one Apple ID. You can then sync with your computer which should be using that same Apple ID.
Pan to download all apps again. Apps that were purchased with the Apple ID you are now using can be downloaded for free. Apps that were purchased using the old Apple ID will have to be purchased again.
Obviously all free apps can be downloaded again without charge. -

I have a large (approximately 3000 CD music collection) and I want to archieve it in Lossless format on several harddrives. I want iTunes to veiw the collection over several HD's as one Library.

iTunes will remember the sync settings for each device, but you will want to give each iPad a different name. You can do that right on the iPad in Settings>General>About>Name. -
Using 2 iPods with one iTunes account.
I share a computer with someone who also has a iPod and we have one version of iTunes downloaded. Although we have seperate user names iTunes seems to autosync what she's put in the library to my iPod and vise-versa. We would love to share some of the files that we pay for, but we certainly don't want to share everything. Is the best option for us to just sync our files manuelly instead of auto-syncing?

How do i synce two different ipods with one computer??
i recently purchased an ipod 5th generation for my other half which i have set up an account for and comes up when i plug in but the home page always comes up with my ipod stuff which is a 4th generation ipod. i have no problem with mine as it stores songs etc but when i plug the other one in it deletes whats on there and i have to manually tick all the songs again to sync back on to it. is this normal?? i am using a windows xp and have no issues with the computer and my ipod just the other one. i also have updated itunes to itunes 9 so the 5th generation ipod can download stuff. it seems to store songs and then when i go to download or update it takes them off and am back to square one!!!! please help!!

There is no limit to how many iPods can run on a single PC. Or how many PCs a single iPod can connect to. Either by Apple design or by any legal issues.

I have a single PC which I have added all of the music to one my log in. My wife and I have Iphones and I want to run separate accounts for itunes, but sync music content from the single source to both phones. Whenever I have tried to do this in the past, it starts to sync all app to both phones. I tried to therefore have separate log ins on the pc itself, but when I have tried this, the music content does not update on my wifes itunes library, after I have added music to mine (ie imported a CD), even though I have linked my wife's music library for itunes purposes to my music folder (hopefully that makes sense!!). Can anyone help as this is driving me mad, otherwise I will just have to run from my account and delete all of my wifes apps etc whenever I sync my phone, and vice versa.

Method two, "automatically update selected playlists only" would allow you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Mini or Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB).
