How do I use my external harddrive windows and Mac

I just purchased an iomega 400GB drive I need to be able to use it for files on both my G3 Mac and a Windows XP laptop, mostly for my itunes files.
The drive is formatted in Fat32 or MSDOS but the Mac doesn't mount the drive. I've heard there is an arbitrary size limit on hard drives formatted in Fat32 but can't seem to find what that limit is. Does anyone know what that limit is? Do I partition the drive at the limit?
This Mac is running 10.3.9. so Macfuse isn't an option
Any help is appreciated.

In FCPX, in the menu-bar is 'Help', which should you link to the Manual.
Be sure, you get the actual one for your version of FCPX ..
Glad to helpful!

  • ITunes 9 - Using 'Home Sharing' between Windows and Mac libraries

I have my main iTunes music library stored on my Windows 7 PC. It is currently around 200Gb in size, so pretty large.
I want to be able to use 'Home Sharing' in iTunes 9 to access this library on my Macbook over my home wireless network.
I don't, however, want to copy the music files themselves over to this laptop, but simply access the library over the network, and play them via either iTunes 9 or Front Row.
I would appear that the Windows and Mac 'iTunes Library' xml files are incompatible. I can't 'Alias' the Windows library on the MacBook for this reason. Does 'Home Sharing' eliminate this problem? Is there a way of accessing the library on the Windows PC without copying all of the files over to the MacBook?
I want to maintain a single library (which is often changing with new podcasts etc), rather than 2 libraries which I have to keep in sync.
Does anybody have any ideas on this one? I'm sure I am not alone in having this problem.
    Here's hoping...:)

  • How do I use an external hard drive on Mac and Windows?

How do I format an external HD for use on Mac and Windows? She has two laptops and have to use both.

format the external for Mac and use MacDrive or HFS+ for Windows on the windows side.
use the FAT32 format and live with the "4-GB-per-file" limit
format the drive NTFS and install e.g. the NTFS 3G driver on the Mac.

  • How do I use my external harddrive with FCPX?

So I have 1 TB external hard drive and want to back up my movie and media files using the hard drive so I don't take up a ton of space on my internal HD.
How do I do it so it doesn't save onto my computer, and only my hard drive. Final Cut pro uses up a lot of memory when I try to make videos.

  • Using iPod both in Windows and Mac at the same Time?

I was wondering if it was possible to use my brand new ipod both in Mac as in Windows without having to format or restore it every time?
The idea is to use "manually manage songs" on both Operating Systems.
    Thanks for your help!

iPods come formatted Windows and will work on Macs and Windows. Unless you Restore it in a Mac, it will stay formatted Windows.
If it doesn't work, put the iPod on Disk Mode and iTunes should recognize in both systems.
If it is formatted Mac, it will not be useable on Windows, even in Disk Mode.

  • How do I use one external HD for two Macs to play music files?

I have an External HD linked to my iMac with all my music files. I want to use that same portable Ext HD to use with my MacBook.
Changing the location from MacBook/iTunes Preferences doesn't work, nor does File>Library>Organize Library. The music files don't show up in iTunes. I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.

    On each computer:
Open iTunes. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu and click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. At the top you will see a box showing the path to your iTunes library. Click on the Change button, navigate to the location for the library on your external drive, select it and click on the Open button. Note this permanently changes the library's location on that computer. That means you cannot access your music unless the external drive is connected.
If you don't want a permanent change, then press the OPTION key and hold it down while you launch iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to select the library you wish to open for that session.

  • Want to use iPod on both Windows and Mac What is going on?

I had a iPod mini and we have a 1st gen Nano and 2 2nd gen Nano's and all worked fine when I formatted them on the Windows PC and then plugged into the Mac. My mini died so I now have a 4th gen Nano. Works fine on the Windows PC. When I plug it into the Mac, it started up iTunes fine like it should. Tried to copy one song and it ejected the iPod. It will not recognize it in iTunes or even on the desktop. The Nano charges being plugged in, but it is like it is plugged into the standard wall charger. I would like to get it working with both machines like all the others that I have. It did update to the latest 1.0.3 PC firmware.

  • Tried to use iTunes library from Windows and Mac - lost everything

My iTunes Library is on a NAS (Dlink DNS-323) and until last night, I was only using it with my two macs (both running 10.5.6).
Last night, I wanted to use it from my Vista laptop so I looked up online and realized I can easily do it by renaming the "iTunes Library" file to iTunes Library.itl and double clicking from iTunes on Windows.
It seemed to work because when iTunes opened, I could see my playlists and I saw the message "updating library". I was afraid about the update to the library, so I just exit iTunes at the time thinking it would all be ok.
Guess not. This morning when I opened iTunes from my iMac, it opened with and empty library. I tried to do Library/Import Playlist and it did nothing but add the "standard" playlists to my library. I tried it a few times, with different settings (trying to re-rename the .itl back to just iTunes Library for example) and nothing worked.
Do I have any hope to recreate the library? From now on I will be backing up the NAS also, but meanwhile any ideas?

Your library file was being converted from Mac-based paths to Windows-based paths; apparently iTunes isn't courteous enough to work on a temp file while doing that conversion. You're not going to get it back. (And now you've learned the hard lesson of making backups of your important stuff
If the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file is still in one piece, you can use File menu -> Library -> Import playlist and point the file dialog to the xml file. Just about all the previous iTunes-only metadata will be imported (IIRC, about all you lose is some "Skip" info, and of course, Date Added will reflect the new date of import).

  • Using my treo in windows and mac

Hi everyone! I just recently converted from a pc to a macbook. Its been an interesting transition. I seem to live lurking on the boards trying to figure out various issues. This one I cant get:
I used my Treo 650 on my windows. And now I want to convert it over to the mac. I have uploaded the latest palm software (that I saw in another thread), and while I can get my isync to recognize it, nothing comes over when I open the software. I also synced using my hotsync and again, nothing is in the palm folder or the address book on the mac.
    What am I missing?
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you have installed Palm Desktop 4.2.1 revision D on your Macintosh, you need only configure your standard Palm conduits initially to Handheld overwrites Macintosh. This will transfer your contacts, calendars and task records to the Palm Desktop. Memos will be transfered, but are not supported by iSync, should you choose to go that route.
To move copies of your contacts to the Address Book, export the data from the Palm Desktop in vCard format, then import that data into the Address Book. To move copies of your calendars into iCal, export them in vCal format, then import that data into iCal. The export and import of task records for use in iCal is not supported.
At this point, you will need to determine if you want to synchronize with the Palm Desktop or with iSync, thereby transferring data to the Address Book and iCal instead. [The Missing Sync for Palm OS is an alternative, discussed below.] You cannot synchronize to both environments - it's one or the other. If it's the Address Book and iCal combination with iSync—where you will have to perform a one-time manual input of task records and where memos are not supported—the use the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option in the Devices menu of iSync to initiate that process. If it is to the Palm Desktop, do not add your device to iSync: instead, simply revert your conduits to the Synchronize setting to enable bidirectional data transfer.
You may wish to synchronize to the Address Book and iCal using the Missing Sync for Palm OS, a far more capable and robust program than iSync, and one which overcomes the irritating limitations of the iSync Palm Conduit. It also synchronizes AvantGo content, media files and photos to iTunes and iPhoto, memos to an included Mark/Space MemoPad application for OS X, and generally improves the synchronization experience. In addition, it supports the features available in advanced Palm devices like your Treo 650, including the transfer of contact photos, synchronization of contact and calendar categories, and multiple address data fields not supported by the iSync Palm Conduit. More information about that application is available here:

  • Can I use my shuffle with Windows and Mac?

My shuffle works great with my computer running windows, but doesn't mount on my Apple, or recognized by iTunes (on my G4).
Can I use the Shuffle on both computers?

Yes you can. The iPod Shuffle always uses FAT32 so it's compatible with both OSes out of the box. With a dual 800 I'm guessing you've got USB 1.1 ports. You're also running 10.4.2 so you should be fine. I've used my shuffle with a Windows PC running XP via USB 2.0 and my upgraded Sawtooth running 10.3.9 via USB 1.1 (both direct port and via the keyboard).
Note that there is no "manual" mode for the shuffle so iTunes won't show you what's on there unless you let it remove all the songs first.

  • Use external drive for windows and mac

    Hello,
I just bought a external 320Gb Western Digital Drive. I would like to use
the drive for windows and mac.I will not like to make partation on the drive
to use it on both operating systems. Is there any formating system with which i can use in both operating systems? I would like to use time machine feature on that drive also.
    Thanx.

If you want to use a disk for both PC/Mac file storage and Time Machine, you will have to create two partitions. Partitioning is sort of like creating multiple virtual disks on the same physical disk. One partition should be formatted for PC (which the Mac can also use) and the other should be formatted for HFS+ (Mac only) which is what Time Machine requires. The Disk Utility application makes partitioning and formatting very easy.

  • Can i use exfat format for my external western digital harddrive so that i can use in both windows and mac?

can i use exfat format for my external western digital harddrive so that i can use in both windows and mac?
    thanks in advance.
    <Email Edited by Host>

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

  • How to use an external hard drive and copy files to the disk for mac and windows??

please tell me how to copy files to external hard disk and use it for both mac and windows. there is the fat32 formatting bt i dont wanna use formatting because i already have a lot of content on the exteral hard disk. thank you.

It is simplest to have the HDD formatted to noe common to both Mac an PC.  ExFAT is one.  But to do that will erase all data on the HDD.
If the HDD id formatted NTFS, Mac can read but not write to it.  The solution then is to use a third party application such as Paragon or Tuxera which will overcome that obstacle.  These applications do have mixed reviews.
    Ciao.
