How do I use my iPhone 3G as a modem?

My old Palm phone was great for when I was out of town because I could plug it into my laptop and use its 3G/GPRS connection to get the internet on my laptop.
I can't see any way I can do this on my iPhone... can someone help?

Be careful, it is NOT illegal, it as nothing to do with laws. You have the right to do whatever you want with your iPhone, you bought it, it is yours. But yes, it will void your warranty with Apple (if they notice it) and you may get trouble with your carrier (in term of being billed for data usage if they notice it, which might happen if you abuse).
I do not recommend that you jailbreak your iPhone here, but I just wanted to add some precisions here.

I still see "activation" error messages after restarting. They need to be registered under different Apple ID's. The initial Apple ID is set when you first start the phone up. If you've already registered the phone to the iTunes account, back it up to your computer, and then have iTunes do a factory reset. Go to www.icloud.com, log in with your current Apple ID, select "Find My iPhone," choose the iPhone you want to dissociate from your primary Apple ID from the upper left, and then click the little circled X ("remove").
When you start the phone, it will have you go through the setup process again, at which time you need to create a unique Apple ID for the device. You can then restore it from your iTunes backup to get back your apps and other settings.
Whenever you use the iTunes store, use the login information (Apple ID and password) that you were using before. Basically, the second Apple ID that you created is purely used for accessing iCloud services, which includes synchronization of contacts, iCal events, and other such things.

You have two choices: 1. Get your phone officially unlocked, then purchase local sims in Europe...cheap, or 2. Put your phone in Airplane Mode, then go back into settings & turn WiFi on.
