On our original iPod we bought apps under one apple ID. Three years later with our first iPad, we used a different ID for purchases. Now we want to install the original apps (at least some of them) on our new iPad air. How?

Do you have them on your computer's iTunes library or on a backup drive so that you can sync them to it ? You could log into that account on your iPad (tap on the current id in Settings > iTunes & App Store to log out of that) and redownload them via the Purchased tab in the App Store app, but if you do that you may tie your iPad to that account for 90 days : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627 (so you might not be able to redownload, use iTunes Match or automatic downloads on your 'iPad' account until those 90 days have completed).

You are incorrect regarding automatic downloads. I've had multiple IDs on both my original iPad for over two years and my iPod Touch G4 for a year. I've have had automatic downloads turned on for music, apps and books on both devices and I've never had a problem. My auto-download is tied to the ID that I am trying to eventually migrate to as my only one.

This seems to be selective in how this works and by that I mean that sometimes users are locked out of their own account when they download content from another ID.
I was in a discussion yesterday where a user used his partner's ID on his iPad in order to download a book for him. After he downloaded the book to his iPad using his partner's ID, he was locked out of his own ID.
I referred the OP to the iTunes Associated Devices kb article that King Penguin referenced. I have no idea if this is the reason, but sometimes I wonder that because you have the same address and I assume the same credit card associated to both of your ID's - that this does not apply to you.
The bottom line is that this does lock some users out of their own ID's. I've seen it happen before - and more than a few times. I just can't figure out definitively when and why it actually does happen to a particular user.
Plus - why would Apple warn users about it if there wasn't any truth to it.

I forgot to mention that she has a PC at her house that she also syncs to. Would this cause a problem. I am already getting that pop up saying that the iPod is synced to another library (even though she is signed in with her Apple ID to iTunes) and gives the pop up to Cancel, Erase & Sync, or Transfer Purchases. My question arose because she clicked on "Erase & Sync" by mistake when she plugged the iPod to her PC the first time. When the iPod was purchased and setup, it was synced to my PC first. When she went home, she hooked it up to her PC and then she erased it by accident. I was able to restore all the missing stuff yesterday using my PC. However, even after doing that it still told me the next time I hooked it up last night that the iPod was currently synced with a different library. Hopefully, you can help me understand all this. You don't transfer Apple ID's from one device to another one. You sign out in the settings, )the App Store and iTunes if necessary) and then sign in with the other ID.
Settings>iTunes & App Stores>Apple ID>Sign out. Them sign in with the other ID. You can sign out of the app store and iTunes as well by going to the featured Atab in the App Store and the music tab in iTunes, swipe to the bottom and access the Apple ID in there.
You should have erased the iOad before you gave it to her in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings. That way she could set up the iPad as new with her own Apple ID.
Be aware of the fact that if you use each others ID's in order to download past purchased content to your own iPads, you will lock yourself out of your own ID as you will have associated your iPad with the other person's Apple ID.
In other words, if you sign into your wife's ID on your iPad so that you can download an app or an album so that you don't have to pay for it again, you will lock yourself out of your Apple ID for 90 days.

You can't, well not easily anyway. The iPad is not meant as a multi account device.
You can Sign Out of your iTunes account in Settings->iTunes and App Stores->Apple ID->Sign Out
However if you sign in with another ID and then download past purchases with it you will lock out the previous ID for 90 days. Which means it will not be able to be used on the iPad for 90 days.

You can even use an "alias" of yours. That's a fake address that actually sends everything to you. Check with your current email supplier.

I recently purchases a ipad for my 86 year old mother. I want to also add music to it that I have cd's for. She now has an Apple ID of her own and I have my own Apple ID. The problem is this, when I log out of my itunes account and log in as her, I can still see all my music library as her. How do I see NOTHING under her account, until I actually load in music for her. Then can i sync her ipad using my OWN Mac and have it appear on her ipad? I have not enabled home sharing at all. How do I manage multiple Apple IDs on one iMac

We just purchased my oldest child her first personal iPod Touch 5th gen. Up until now, we have all managed our music/devices (2 nanos, 2 iPhones, iMac, iPad, and now Touch) on our iMac under one Apple ID (mine!). We use this ID for everything from Apple TV purchases to iTunes to apps etc. as one big pool all charged to one credit card. Now that my daughter has her own Touch we want to allow her to redeem gift cards to buy things (rather than go to credit card). The problem is, her Touch is now somehow (automagically) synced to MY Apple ID - I am guessing because we plug it into our iMac and downloaded all the OLD songs she had from before. Is there anyway that my daughter can have a separate Apple ID than our main one and still manage them both on our iMac??

- To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.

You have to sign out of ID (for iCloud you delete the iCloud account from the iPod) and sign in with other ID.
If the iPod has iOS 7 then you have the enter the password for Apple ID presently sign in Settings>iCloud.
Also, a Restriction can be set (Settings>General>Restrictions) the prevents changing accounts
