How do I use spaces in Mountain Lion?

Is there a way to activate the "spaces" function in Mountain Lion?  I really enjoyed that in Snow Leopard.

To make assignments permanent:
1. while in Mission Control, click and drag the apps to whichever space you want them in.
2. right click on the app icon down in the dock
Do you mean do step 2 while in Mission Control?  That simply takes me out of Mission Control.
3. select the "Options"
4. click on "This Desktop"
"This Desktop" Option is not seen for many applications, including Safari.  Here are the Options I see:
Keep in Dock
Open at Login
Show in Finder

  • How do you use imessages on "Mountain Lion"

How do you use i-messages on Mountain Lion, Several analysis of the new operating system seem to say you can do that but  I tried to send a message to my Ipod, Iphone and I-Pad from the new operating system " Mountain Lion"  But I guess I got things set up wrong it did not work.  I got no messages from the I-Mac.
Since I am a new I-Mac used ( Have a ipod, ipad & Iphone) would like to be able to send Imessages from my I-Mac and can't figure out how to do that. I keeps wanting to send AIM messages and when I go to change it to I Cloud mesages I don't see I-Cloud on the list???

Joe thanks for the reply but I am still confused here is the problem:
I opened The accounts window and went to my ME.com account but it wants me to set up an AIM account , what is that all about . I was sure I was sending the messages thru the apple server .
Second I am a PC person and this is my wifes I-Mac,  so I am new to MACS but I have used PC's for 35 years.
She wants to be able to send me I-Messages for her MAC that is why I am trying to set this up for her.   She is NOT a Techie and so she depends on me.  I am very confused by the MAC as I have buily trouble shoot and fixed PS (not as a profession but as a hobby) I am trying to get used to the MAC so I can help my wife. As I have an IPOD and an 4S I-Phone. Now you know the whole story.  Sorry to bore you with the details but I was sure it would help you give me a better Idea of where to go to correct the AIM situation.
OK when I go to the ME.com account there is no where where I see Caller ID???
What I see is My wifes e-mail a Bonjour ( imactive) account, &  Yahoo account.  I may be in the wrong place
Toi be frank I don't see an Imessages account.  Under mail accounts I see My wifes 5 e-mail accounts and one of them is a .ME account ( I assume that is the icloud account) but where it says account type it says AIM how do I change it to an I Cloun account?
OK the next question when you say click on the DOCK I go to system preferences and click on DOC and I get some screen that shows SIZE, Magnification Position on screen and so on.
When I go to the Finder and click on Applications I get a window that says messages but there is nothing on that window that I can adjust?
    Help Where is i messages

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

  • How come, ever since I installed Mountain Lion, my computer is slower???

How come, ever since I installed Mountain Lion, my computer is slower???

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. What approximate values are shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

how to turn on usernoted in mountain lion after i accidently turned it off?

Usernoted was continually crashing and eating up memory. I clicked on it in the activity monitor and it took me to a place where I could turn it off. Without thinking I did so. I think I turned it off in the console or the terminal. I don't remember exactly what was written. I just clicked  to allow it to be turned off. Since then I cannot upload anything to facebook directly from my imac or from safari when I use share. But iI still get facebook notifications in the notification center. I have restarted and even shut down and then restarted and also logged out and in and I still can't share.

Hi SB. Thanks for your advice. I checked and I am using the recommended settings. I'm still not sure how to fix this. It's very irritating! I will read an email on my ipad, then hit my imac and see that the email is sitting unread in my Mail inbox.

  • How to create multiple Spaces (desktops) in Lion

On Lion, Spaces tend to instead be called Desktops, but I’ll continue to use the term Spaces in this article. To make more, enter Mission Control and hover your mouse over the top-right of the screen (or hold the option/alt key). You’ll see a “+” button, and you can click it to create a new Space.
You can also hover over any Space you’ve created (or again hold the option/alt key) to see a delete button, which you can use to delete that Space. You can only delete Spaces you’ve manually created.
This info was found in the link provided below in my searches to figure out how to get diff spaces (desktops) in Lion since i use photoshop in one space, indesign in another and lightroom in another, etc...

Update2: There is something very wrong with wireless on mountain lion recovery. I don't know what the problem is, but this link may explain:
    http://osxdaily.com/2012/08/10/os-x-mountain-lion-10-8-1-beta-released-for-dev-t esting-may-include-wi-fi-fix/
Wireless recovery would start out with over 25 hours estimated and kept on failing. It turns out to be a two step process of downloading a few Mbytes then a 4Gbyte .dmg file, but I couldn't even download the Mbyte file. I bought the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in, restarted recovery and download of a little more than 4Gbytes took less than an hour. My limiting factor was probably comcast home internet rate of 12Mbps. The wi-fi wireless connection should be able to do over 100Mbps, so wireless shouldn't be much slower than wired, except wi-fi wireless is broken. Now that ML is installed and updated, wi-fi seems fine now, as I am using it right now, but I haven't tried downloading a big file yet.
Don't use wi-fi wireless for Mountain Lion recovery.

  • How do I print my iCal (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) in 5x7 format?

How do I print my iCal (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) in a 5x7 format? 5x7 is not listed as an option in the print menu.

For custom print sizes, see the software called Clickbooks: http://www.bluesquirrel.com/products/cbmac/
I would ask them if what you want is possible before purchasing.  A customer of mine got it to make many other custom formatted pages.   Don't have them anymore, but they I'm sure could tell you if it is possible.  Be sure to also indicate your printer model.

  • How do I download Safari for Mountain Lion?

How do I download Safari for Mountain Lion? It's not in the App Store, it is nowhere on the Apple website . . . OK, so I guess it is supposed to be part of Mountain Lion, but I am running Mountain Lion and whatever version of Safari I ended up with would not even run at all . . .  so I trashed it (or at least what part of it I was allowed to trash) and though reinstalling it would be a good idea . . . but I can't find one to reinstall. The latest version I can find is for Leopard, and of course that won't run.
Not to mention that since getting Mt Lion, iPhoto won't run . . . it produces an error message saying I need to check with the developer to make sure it runs with this version of OS X! So I wonder who the developer of iPhoto is, who produces software that is incompatible with Mt Lion???
And even in submitting this there is no option to tag it for any OS later than 10.7.4!!

Since Safari is crashing, post a crash report...   reinstalling the OS X rarely helps a browser crash issue.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash  information.
Copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder.
Please include the "binary images" section...

MacBook upgrade possibilities - https://discussions.apple.com/message/19577869 - "The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion."
Why?  Good question.  I am a strong believer in not upgrading just because something new comes out, especially if you are running older equipment.  I would say unless you see a need for it, just stick with Snow Leopard until something comes along that absolutely requires Mountain Lion.

Try going to the web based site and see if you can set up a temporary folder there. Move anything you don't want to download to that folder.
