How do i use wifi on my imac

I have an old imac that is still great for word processing and playing DVD / music but its now in a place in the house away from the router and the cable wont reach. Basically it would be far easier if this desktop mac had wifi. is there anything that can be plugged into the external ports that can act as a air port fuction.
I running 10.5.8 which is basically the max capacity the mac can take.
1.25 GHZ power PC G4 (The old stalk type macs - great design!!)
Memory 2 GB DDR SDRAM
Any suggestions welcome - except why dont I buy a new one - come on this thing still looks great and its 8 years old.
Regards
Baffie

This is a Mac-compatible USB dongle:
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
You have the OS required and USB 2.0 ports, so you should get very fast speeds from this. I like this model because the extension cradle lets you move the recevier about for the best signal.
You don't show your geographic location, but the US firm I linked does some international shipping. Noonday With is correct with the "Hard to find" comment because it is hard to find such adaptors on a store shelf that have the required Mac drivers.
I "survey-shopped" a huge electronics superstore in Oregon and they had six different USB wireless adaptors on the shelf. None mentioned Mac compatibility on the box. I recorded the makes/models and then searched their makers' sites for Mac support and drivers. Four had absolutely none; two "mentioned" it but referred the user to extenrnal sites for drivers. Those links returned only circuler searches and no drviers.
The web-order one above has worked for everyone here who's reported on them.

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • How to only use WIFI

I wonder how i can switch off 3g and only use wireless?
Tried the airplane mode and that switches off both 3G and WIFI.
Example when you are in a hospital they want you to switch off GSM but you can use their free WiFI connection. But I dont find anywhere to only switch off GSM but let the WIFI on

You can turn both bluetooth & WiFi back on in settings while the iPhone is in Airplane mode. If you are required to turn off your cellular chip, putting the phone in Airplane mode or removing the sim are the only two ways to do so & still use WiFi. You can also turn 3G & cellular data off in settings and still use WiFi. However, this does not completely turn off the phone's cellular chip as uou will still receive calls over Edge or GPRS.

  • How do I share wifi data between iMac and windows based computer on wifi network?

I have an unsecured wifi network at home and need to easily share photos between computers>  I have an iMac and a couple window based computer> Is ther an easy way instead of using a thumb drive?

Since photos are typically large files it will probably be quicker with the thumb drive. The other way is to set up sharing where the files are located and directing the other computers to look there.

  • How can I use WiFi channel 13 on a US MacBook?

Hi there. I own a MacBook 2.4Ghz, have been using it in the US for a while and everything worked just fine, WiFi included. Now that I find myself living in Europe for a couple of months, problems arise. The WiFi I'm supposed to use is on channel 13, and there's no way I can change it. I read that channels 12-13 are not allowed in the US, and that's probably why my MacBook doesn't detect it, whereas my European iPhone always does.
My question is: how can I "tell" my Mac to use this connection anyway? It's technically able to detect it. KisMac finds this connection showing its channel (13), so there must be some setting that prevents me to use it because it's illegal in the US.
Any help would be really appreciated

Those combinations work on my G4 iBook (which is even older than you Macbook) and they work with my Mac mini with the aluminum Apple keyboard (which is newer), so they should work for you.
When using a modifier key like fn, you have to hold the modifier key down, then press the second key. That is, the fn key must be down before the arrow key is pressed and it must stll be down when the arrow key is pressed.
    I imagine you know that.
Do the arrow keys work normally, for example to move the cursor in text?
Does the fn key work for other things (fn - delete to delete forward, for example).
Have you looked for settings in Systems Preferences > Keyboard that might affect this (I don't really think that any should) or might you have any third party software that would affect keyboard input?

  • How do I use my mid 2010 iMac as display with mid 2011 macbook pro?

I have a mid 2010 iMac and I want to use it as a display for my mid 2011 macbook pro.
The iMac has a mini display port and the macbook has a thunderbolt port.
Does anyone know if this is possible and what I need to make it possible?
    Cheers!

If the iMac is a 21-inch model, you need to use a product such as ScreenRecycler over a network.
If the iMac is a 27-inch model, click here and follow the instructions.

  • I'm sorry, you probably get a lot of questions similar to this, but how do I use my 09 27" iMac as an external 1440p monitor for a PC in TDM?

    Hello all,
Firstly, let me apologise. You probably see a lot of these questions. However, I've had a look through and I haven't been able to find a solution to my problem.
I have an '09 27" iMac which I use for the creative side of my life. (I'm training to be an architect.) However I'm also really into gaming, and so I've just bought a brand new PC. The GPU is a GeForce GTX 780 Ti with two DVI, an HDMI and a DisplayPort output. My iMac has a Mini DisplayPort jack.
I'm basically wondering if there's any way of using the iMac as a 1440p monitor for this new PC. I tried connecting the PC to the iMac with an HDMI cable using an HDMI to MDP adapter and hitting cmd+f2 on the iMac to initiate Target Display Mode, but that hasn't worked. I'm now thinking of buying an HDMI to MDP direct cable to see if that works but I'm also wondering if a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable might work too? I was under the impression that the 780 Ti had a MDP output but the version of mine only has the outputs listed above.
Is any of this even possible? I've heard reports in the past of people having success with MDP to MDP from PC to iMac but of course I can't do that. Am I wasting my time and money here?
At present I'm using my 37" HDTV as a monitor on my desk but as you can imagine, it's far too big to use in the long run! It's annoying because the 780 Ti is capable of running max settings easiliy in 1440p and having to downgrade from the iMac to a 1080p HDTV is disheartening.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    Westy

I know this is old - but did you ever get this working. Thinking of getting a 780 ti card and I have an older mac with the mini-displayport too.

  • How can I use WiFi to mirror my Display on my TV?

Sometimes I would like to use my HDTV as a display to mirror what is on my desktop's or laptops screen's, running 10.6.8. I can do this wired without problems either using an HDMI or VGA input. But it's not convenient
Is their anyway to do this with WiFI/Airport? It would seem one would only need a WiFi receiver and conversion hardware on the TV.
I don't want to just stream media, like with Apple TV, but want to mirror what ever is happing on my computer screen.
    ALL suggestions are appreciated
    TIA,
    Bill

    No.
iCloud and PhotoStream merely "push" you iOS photos to your other devices.

  • How can i use office work in iMac?

I want have microsoft work in Imac and relate to my Ipad, which one is the better one should I choise? because it have a lot difference choice in app store

Microsoft Works doesn't run under Mavericks.
Microsoft Office (v 2008 and 2011) run in Mavericks. I think they have just released some iPad versions, but they must be purchased as a subscription service with Office 2013 in order to actually use the programs.
Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can all open, edit Office documents, but they are completely different user experiences from Office. I prefer them due to their clean, simple interfaces, but they won't have all the features you have in Office.
    They have iPad versions.
There are also Office alternatives, LibreOffice, NeoOffice, but they don't have iPad versions. They are also not in the App Store (last I checked).

  • How do I use my 2011 27" iMac as an external display for a pc?

I just bought a 27" imac for my home, and was also planning on using it as an external display for my work Dell Laptop running Windows 7.
The Dell laptop has a displayport output, so I was planning on getting a displayport <-> minidisplayport cable, and using the iMac in target display mode.
I would simply plug the minidisplay end of the cable into one of the iMac's 2 Thunderbolt ports. Seemed fairly simple.
Except now it seems from what I have been reading that 2011 iMacs DO NOT WORK in target display mode unless they are connected to another Thunderbolt source. This leads to me two questions.
    1. Can anyone confirm or deny this? If this is true, does that mean I cannot plug my Dell's displayport into the iMac's Thunderbolt port as I described above?
    2. If #1 is true, is there any other option? Are there any adapters that I can use to turn my Dell into a Thunderbolt source for display purposes?
If I can't resolve this I will have to return the iMac
    Thanks very much.
    David

    David,
Sorry you can't use the 2011 iMac as an external display to your PC. The feature you are referring to is called Target Display Mode and works on 2009 & 2010 27" iMacs. The 2011 machines use Thunderbolt as you know however they do support external displays that are not Thunderbolt displays. So for example if you wanted 2 displays on the iMac you can easily do that with either Mini Display port to DVI or MDP to VGA or even HDMI. MDP is the same size as Thunderbolt and this will work fine to drive a display, TV or even a projector.
I'd recommend reading Apple's explanations at Target Display Mode 2009 & 2010 iMacs & Target Display Mode Mid 2011 iMacs.
Using a Mac as an external display for a Windows machine to me seems like a horrible waste of a Mac. Why not enjoy the iMac and if anything run Windows on it and get rid of the PC?

  • How do i Use my old 2009 imac as a monitor for my new 27 inch 2014 iMac?

Just got the 2014 27-inch iMac, and i have a 2009 iMac as well as a ViewSonic Monitor with a Thunderbolt adaptor.
Is it possible with the 2 Thunderbolt display ports to have 2 extra monitors?...So far on the ViewSonic works. I tried to use Migration Assistant to Transfer files, and the 2014 saw the other computer, but the 2009 just kept looking for a connection while it was connected by Thunderbolt.
At a local Mac store, i asked this question, and when they confirmed the the 2014 had 2 Thunderbolt ports, that i would be able to use the old iMac and an additional monitor.
    Please Help,
    Thank You

  • How can I use my Late 2009 iMac as an external monitor with my new MacBook Pro 15" Retina

I want to use my iMac (Late 2009) as an external Display for my new 15" MacBook Pro Retina, I need to know what Cables to use so I can go buy them the Apple Store, I already tried a thunderbolt cable between the two and that doesn't work, but I think this might
              iMAC                                                                                 MBP 15" Retina
Mini display Port to VGA adaptor -> VGA Cable -> Mini Display Cable to VGA adaptor
    or maybe
Mini Display port to HDMI adaptor -> HDMI Cable -> HDMI Port on MBP
Pleae help I can't seem to figure it out online.
    Thanks!

    Hello, All-
I too am very interested in the answer to this query. Same set up, same fail w/the Thunderbolt cable. The Genius Bar at the Apple Store was no help & recommended I bring my 27" iMac into the store...seriously? Their ultimate answer was that I needed a plain old male-male mini display port cable....that the Thunderbolt cable was the problem. Bloody unlikely, I say. Another guy in the store agreed with me this morning, so swapped out the cable. I was hoping upon hope it was a bad cable, but no such luck—still nothing. Next I tried a mini-display-port-to-DVI adapter—DVI cable—mini-display-port-to-DVI adapter. This also did not work. Is there a chance that the iMac running Snow Leopard and the MacBook running Mountain Lion is the problem???

  • How do I use Time Machine w/ Imac/MacBook and AirportExtreme w/ Ext.HD?

I have an iMac and a Macbook w a LaCie 1TB HD and Airport Extreme Base Station. I want to use Time Machine to back up both computers. I was told I should connect the HD to each one separately w USB first to speed up the initial copy and then plug it into Airport and it should automatically continue to back up each computer. Is this the best/fastest way to do it? Do I need to install any software for the ext. HD on each computer first?

no, this won't work actually, because directly attached backups are stored differently. you should START the backups when the drive is attached to EABS. once it's started you can interrupt the backup by control-clicking on TM in the dock->stop backup. THEN move the drive to be directly attached and resume the backup. this way it will continue the backup started remotely. once the first backup is finished you can move the drive back to AEBS.
    repeat for the second computer.

no, no extra software is needed. but you do need to make sure that you have installed all the updates for AEBS.
