How do I verify the integrity of an install DVD?

Ever since moving to Leopard I have been having strange (and seemingly unique) problems with Adobe CS3 applications as well as random restarts and kernel panics. I presumed that these were the result of a failure of my logic board, but I booted a friend’s MBP (same model) from my machine (in target disk mode) and the problems persisted using his machine as well, which argues against it being a hardware problem (at least an obvious one). Some of the errors seem to have to do with a failure in character encoding (severe garbling of text, warnings from Adobe apps about using non-Roman characters in file names that use only lower-case Roman text, etc.).
Since the problems started with the move to Leopard (and not with the Adobe CS3 applications) and because they have reappeared despite a clean installation of everything on my machine from source (and even on a separate partition where I installed only Leopard and InDesign, which is why I suspected a hardware problem), I am forced to consider the possibility that something was wrong with my Leopard DVD. When installing, I have allowed it to verify the media prior to running, but I'm wondering if there is any way to verify that everything has installed correctly. If there were some obscure logic-board problem that runs consistently but rarely and affects the installation, I'd like to be able to verify that. On the other hand, if I have a bad installation disk somehow, I'd like to know that as well.
So, is there some way I can verify that my install DVD is OK and not the source of the problem? Note that whether I leave the bare 10.5.0 install or upgrade to 10.5.1 makes no difference, so whatever problem I am having would have to be on the install media, if it is part of Leopard.
(For what it's worth, the story of my troubles with CS3 and my reasons for suspecting an encoding problem in the OS can be found here: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05ffd3 )

Pop the DVD in, launch Disk Utility, select the DVD, select Images->Checksum->CRC-32 image checksum. BTW, that should happen when you boot with the DVD. If you didn't make a bootable backup/clone of your Tiger installation, then you failed to follow safe practices as outlined in:

As for your problems, boot the machine with the disk that contains the Apple Hardware Test suite and run the extended tests to rule out hardware problems. To more extensively check the installed RAM, download Rember and run it.

When I try to install Messenger 6.0.3, I get the following error message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in

How do I renew the integrity of the info.plist file (ideally without screwing everything else up)? Or is something else at work here?

I don't know. It might help if you told me what the message was, and what was the "failing" message you mentioned earlier?
How is it you are now able to install Messenger? Did you repair the disk? Did you download a new copy?
One thing you can do is to open the Console application, from your Utilities folder, and have console.log in one window and system.log in another. Use the "broom" to clear both windows, then try to start a chat session. When it quits, there will be a message in one or both of the console windows.
Copy and paste what you get from these windows (and say which is which). I need to see the exact message to take this further.

  • How do you verify the completeness of a restoration drill?

One responsibility of the DBA is to ensure the database backups are usable. Running the restore / recover commands in rman is easy. However, how would you verify the correctness of the restoration? Or do you believe that when rman says it's Ok and oracle merrily open the database, then it's OK? And how about point-in-time recovery (which seems even more difficult to verify)?
(Even though this is a generic question, here is the a database version if needed as basis of discussion:
    Oracle: 10.2.0.4
    OS: RHEL 4

I would prefer the verification to be done in database perspective. If there is no data loss / inconsistence in the database, it should also be OK for the application.
And if queries on key tables were used, has any one experienced any issue? If so, what's the cause and what's the resolution? And for restoration for hot backup or point in time recovery, it is difficult to confirm what's correct result, because the data was not fixed during the restoration.

    Folks,
How do I verify the security of a web site when there is no https symbol and lock displayed in the browser?.

On no account install Norton on your Mac.
Norton Antivirus (made by Symantec) has a very long and illustrious reputation for mangling Mac OS X systems, sometimes to the point where a complete reinstall is necessary. Among other things, it installs kernel extensions which are known to cause kernel panics and system freezes; it contains known and documented bugs which can silently corrupt Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign files, destroy a user's ability to authenticate as an administrator, and (on PPC systems) can cause Classic to stop functioning; and Symantec has on at least two occasions now released flawed .dat file updates which erroneously report certain critical Mac OS X files as "viruses." (Deleting these "viruses" causes damage to the system that in some cases renders it unbootable.)

About how many years would the integrated macbook pro w/retina batteries last before they required replacement service?

It is entirely dependent upon how the batteries are used ( with a little bit of luck).  There is no specific time period that any one can provide.

All has been installed. Those are there in case you need to do a reinstall. Unlike most Windows based hardware vendors these days. Apple still ships software you might need in case a drive fails. Even in the case of the new MacBook Air, Apple ships the software on a flash drive.

  • My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do?

My iMac doesnt want to read/run the Mac OS X Install DVD, what can I do? What I want to do is format my mac, so I need to run de DVD Installer when the Mac start up holding C buttom. Is there any other way to do it?

You must be using the original grey OS X discs that shipped with the machine or a retail OS X installation disc.
If you are attempting to use a grey OS X disc that did not ship with your iMac, it will not work since they are machine-specific.
Other than those reasons, it is possible the disc is dirty or scratched, or your optical drive has simply failed. In the latter event you need to replace it or use an external optical disc drive, or boot your iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode and use another Mac to read the disc.

  • How can I verify the SSL service enabled in CSS and SCA ?

I'm working for the OpenSSL vulnerability for CSS and SCA. How can I check if the device enabled the SSL service ?
    - https://x.x.x.x --> cannot access.
    - telnet x.x.x.x 443 --> I got a blank screen. I think this should be connection rejected if no SSL enabled.
Please guide me what command should I issue on the device(CSS and SCA) to verify the SSL service enabled ?
    Thanks,

To see what ports are being listened to.
On the SCA, you can do "show netstat"
On the CSS, you would go into debug mode and do
    symbol-table load
    shell inetstatShow

  • How do I verify the security update for 7.1.6 is installed?

I have over 200 classroom PCs I need to install the security patch linked below on. How can I verify it's correctly installed since there is no visible change to the software, not even on the Help-About screen.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305531
(This is for Quick time for Windows)
    Windows   Windows XP Pro

If you install QT 7.1.6, it says 7.1.6 in the help screen. If you install the newly released security update, nothing changes to show the security update has been applied. It still says 7.1.6 in the help screen. Even running the patch manually, it gives no indication it has successfully installed.
I am required to install this patch on about 200 clasroom machines but have no way to verify which ones get the patch and which don't. Apparently I can't even go around to each of them and manually verify.
