How do I view pc files migrated to iMac? The folders tell me I don't have permission to open them.

I used the Migration Assistant tool to copy files from my WindowsXP pc to my new iMac.   This took about 3 hours to complete.
I finally was able to locate the folders on the iMac, but they all have a red minus sign in the bottom right corner, and when I try to open them, I get a message saying I don't have permission to open the files - even though they are my own files.  Any ideas on how to access my migrated files on my Lion iMac?

Is the iPhoto library in your home folder, or have you moved it somewhere else?

  • Trying to copy files and getting this error message, One or more items can't be copied because you don't have permission to read them. this is really annoying, can someone pls help..?

i have two network drive and i am trying to copy a file from my mac mini to one of the network drives, but i keep getting this error message "One or more items can’t be copied because you don’t have permission to read them." i have no idea why this is since i have always been able to copy stuff back and forth. i checked my file sharing permissions and it is set to read and write for admin (me), none for everyone and read for guests. can someone please, this is very annoying and this is the second time it has happened to me.

neither move nor copy is working. both way gives same error message. what i would like to do however is move the file. yes i am logged in as a the admin and the issue is affecting not just that particular file in my system but others as well. i looked at get info and no the file is not locked but under permission, it says everyone and read only. it will not let me change this setting from get info however when i look under system preferences for file sharing, my setting is read and write for admin (me), none for everyone and read for guests.

  • You don't have permission to open this file.

I'm trying to add an Entity Data Model to a Project in Visual Studio 2013.
When I browse to the file to connect to it says
"You don't have permission to open this file. Contact the owner or administrator for permission."
When I go back to SQL Management Studio and check the Server Roles assigned to my user name, I'm listed as a sysadmin.
I clicked ALL the other server roles for good measure, but this does not help.
When I installed SQL Server 2012 I created another user on my computer to serve as the SQL Server Services Account for SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Database Engine.
I notice that this user shows up as the database owner for the database I'm trying to connect to, even though I was logged on using my user name when I created the database.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about Entity Data Model, but if you get an error about lack of permission for opening a file (what file?), SQL Server is probably not the right place to look for file permissions. SQL Server is about managing data in databases, not
files in the file system. For file-permission errors, you need to look in Windows. Or try starting Visual Studio with "Run as Administrator".

  • Issue Migrating iTunes Library to NAS - ... you don't have permission...

I have set up a Buffalo Linkstation Duo Nas with 2TB of usable space (4TB Raid 1) on my home network and it seems to be working fine.
I created a Share folder for Video (which I don't use with iTunes) and another for iTunes Media.
The 600GB of Video that I had on my Mac Pro transferred over just fine, but I am having trouble migrating my iTunes Media over.
According to some posts I've read, the best way to do so is to point iTunes to the new disk in Preferences, then and then do a:
    File>Library>Organize Library>tick Consolidate Files>OK
This was going smoothly until about a half hour (5GB) into the transfer (of ~200GB) and I got an error dialog that says:
"Copying files failed, because you don't have permission to change your iTunes Media Folder or a folder within it."
(the comma is iTunes' typo, not mine)
It doesn't say whether the issue is with the new iTunes Media Folder or the original one.
After using Get Info to check the permissions on the iTunes Media Folder and all the folders immediately inside of it, they all seemed to be read/writable by me.
I ran a Permissions Repair on my main HD with the original iTunes library, but that didn't help.
I can manually copy files to the NAS drive and the shared folder to which I'm attempting place the new iTunes Media Library. So I don't think it is an issue with the NAS.
... and yes, I've tried switching everything off and on.
Would anyone like to take a guess as to what the issue with the permission would be?
    -or-
Can I just manually copy everything over to the NAS and then redirect iTunes to the new folder?
Judging by what did transfer over to the NAS, iTunes seems to be reorganizing a few of the folders and things so it would be nice to let iTunes do the migrating... but... whatever works is fine.

    Solved independently.
I had some videos that were not being managed by iTunes on an external drive which had screwy permissions.... so it wasn't the iTunes Media Folder that was the permission issue, but the oddball folder on a faulty drive.
I removed the offending videos from iTunes and tried again. The entire library consolidated nicely onto the NAS drive (took 18 hrs. though)
Now I just need to figure out the best way to share that library with all the computers on the network. From what I've been reading, it is not as simple as just pointing all the Macs' iTunes to the iTunes Folder on the NAS drive - There are artwork issues and problems with using the same Library simultaneously between Macs.
.... But that's for another discussion.

  • How do you view raw files on an iMac G5?!

    Hello there,
I just recently received my first computer for 30 bucks. It's my first experience getting used to a home computer. I extracted some some rar files with "Unrar" but now I have these raw files, which won't view because I don't have the equipment it seems. I suppose "raw" means a type of photo file? Anyways I can't view these files until I get some kind of raw viewer. I've tried a handful of raw viewers but none of them really work. Most look like these funny documents that have no setup and I tried "fastrawviewr" which keeps saying archiving when I click it... Whatever archive means.. I also have this icon when I first got my iMac G5 name Macintosh hd, which was constantly trying to archive fastrawviewer. I have been stuck for 3 days now puzzled on how to view these raw files. Id appreciate some assistance, I can't continue with my project until I figure out how to view these raw files.

Not sure if you could use a good software editor to convert or manipulate such
large files in an older Mac. Usually RAW files take considerable space, use a
ton of system resources, and require extra storage, memory RAM + larger CPU...
And graphic processor with its own video RAM.
•How to identify iMac models - Apple Support
So with an old computer that may or may not be viable in its own limitation, you
may have some time of it, to make use of it as you seek to do a project w/o much
idea of what software still may exist.
If you have a device that creates RAM image files, see if there is a way for it to
make both jpeg and RAW or less huge files. Or only use the jpeg files and save
the larger RAW files for some other time when you get a later model computer.
    •Graphic Converter - Lemke software:
    http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/download/
see Graphic Converter version 6 or version 7
There is a software by the name Graphic Converter available (may run in demo)
that is a shareware. Note on their download page options and versions, the one
you'd need for use with the old PowerPC based Mac would be of a vintage that
may or may not be available. Their page should have an indication. While I had
an old version of Graphic Converter for Mac, for a Tiger 10.4.11 system, I didn't
use it much. Instead I used a combination of ToyViewer for Mac and the native
Preview application to edit images. Graphic Converter has other capabilities.
Not sure about the viability of or availability of the named software listed here:
http://www.pure-mac.com/graphics.html as most titles and their home pages
may not be available or could have survived but only for Intel-based late Macs.
Some cameras came with software. Nikon offered a trial run of something they
later sold, but that was limited in how it could work; later versions of the software
won't run on older OS X systems. And huge files require extra system resources.
Depending on the build model series Mac  you may be able edit some images OK.
So what are the system specifications and available resources, by the numbers?
You could look into everymac.com and/or get mactracker.ca database to compare
your old iMac G5 specs to see what one you have. Also, you could go to a site &
use it to see specs https://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
For certain software to run, the computer may need some kinds of hardware upgrade.
Or some of the tasks could be well beyond the current status of the device.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • "you don't have permission to open this file" when trying to attach in firefox ONLY. Works in other browsers and windows permissions are wide open.

Only a problem in Firefox. Works in IE and Chrome. I went thru support ideas of checking windows permissions (wide open and the user is the owner), starting firefox in safe mode and uninstalled/reinstalled firefox. Same problem. Any file in My Documents gives the same error, so it is not file related. Any directory under My Documents works the same. I can move files to Desktop and then they attach fine.

As mentioned in the original post, the user IS the owner and the permissions are WIDE open for the user. I have also tried to disable the anti-virus - no luck. The problem is ONLY happening in Firefox. Chrome and IE work perfect. There is also no problem in Windows. The user can add/remove/edit files in the directory. Right now the solution seems to be to use Chrome. I'm not excited about that, but at this point, the only option.

It doesn't matter what type of file I try to down load off the web with FireFox. Of course I.E. works just fine.

  • Can't migrate files "don't have permission to read" - how can I reset access?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini, the mid 2010 model, it had Snow Leopard. I also have a PowerPC G5 running Leopard. So I migrated my files to the mac mini. Then a week later the new mac mini came out (last week). So, preparing to swap my new old mini for the new new mini I copied all my files BACK to the PowerPC. Got the new new mac mini, and of course it runs Lion. I tried to migrate my files but Lion and Leopard (not Snow Leopard, and it can't be upgraded because it's a PowerPC keep in mind) don't play well with each other. Fine. So I next tried to straight copy the files over my network. No go because I get this message:
Items can’t be copied to “Desktop” because you don’t have permission to read them.
I'm using the same login and password on both computers. Both are administrator level. The permissions for the systems themselves have been repaired. I've also tried to set the permissions to the files I want to migrate using this terminal command:
sudo chown -R yourusername:staff  (and then dragging the folders I want blessed into the window)
no go... says I don't have permission to do so.
I tried "pushing" the docs from the other old computer to the new. Doesn't work
I'm trying copying to the Public folder now - and while it works for MOST of the documents many are still being left behind with the same permissions problem.
So, here's my question, given I've tried the above: How can you reset an entire folders contents to become absolutely "public"? There must be a way to do this that I'm missing. Again, I already realize I'm copying from different to new computers, but in Lion I can't seem to reset folder permissions to include "all subfolders" or "all files within this folder" (or whatever it used to say).
    Thanks for any suggestions

Thanks for the help Pondini (gave you a "Helpful Answer" 'star' ). A couple of things, so others have it in front of them:
Setup Assistant can only be used at first install - otherwise you have to reinstall to use it.
Second, it's "dumb" that you can't use network between Leopard and Lion. ARGH. - especially since the firewire ports are different on many newer and older macs (and I mean older as in just over 4 years - not that old really). However you can get adapters (that's the next thing to try) that will change the old pin (4 pin I believe) to the newer (9 pin I believe, have to check that one).
The 501 reference I can check, thanks - I recall seeing that long ago in poking around
On the Lion machine it reads
    User ID: 501
    Group ID: staff
On the Leopard  machine I want to copy from TO the Lion machine it reads:
    User ID: 501
    Group ID: 501
So it seems possible (I'm not sure what I'm seeing - educate me please lol) that the Group ID's don't match, where the Lion machine is staff while the Leopard is '501' - does this matter?
    Thanks.

  • How do i view backedup files

hey guys, we just bought an Airport Time Capsule and backed up our MacBook Pro and 2 iPhones. now id like to view these files to be sure the pictures on my phone are in there before i delete them. i cant find a way to see what's backed up, any help is greatly appreciated.

When you say you backed up the iphone.. how did you do that? The iphone has no direct method of backing up to the TC.. it can only backup to iTunes in the computer or icloud. Nor can you see the backup files.
If you have pictures on the phone, copy them as files directly to the computer.. or to a directory on the TC.. you will need to use filebrowser or similar application to do this.
And you should save it to the computer and then allow TM to backup as it would normally do so there is really a backup.
You cannot see iphoto backups for instance in the TC.. without fully restoring the library.. so seeing backups is actually really hard thing to do.

  • Migrated files - don't have permission

I recently migrated my files from my Imac to my MBpro. During the migration i was prompted to either replace the user on the macbook, or create a new one. I made a new one. Now when i try to access those pictures and files, it tells me i don't have permission to see the contents of the folder.
    Where can I fix this?

You don't have permission to use the migrated files unless you are logged in as the user who owns them, i.e., the new user you created. When you are logged in as your original self, the files don't belong to you.
Someone who understands how to make global permissions changes better than I do will be along to tell you how to sort the problem out.
