How do I view the contents of my ipod on the new itunes?

I used to always drag and drop and delete manually off my ipod, but now I can't seem to find the ipod itself on itunes. I can switch between the itunes store and my library but I can't seem to view the actual ipod. Is this apple saying I need to sync to one computer? I much prefer the dragging and dropping option.

View > Show sidebar will reveal the device in the left hand column and you can drag and drop as before

Some of the tools linked to will only work if the iPod has a valid library. Others can scan the drive independently and some may even be able to rebuild a damaged library. The manual method towards the end should be able to recover your media regardless of the state of the library.

-Transfer iTunes purchases to the compuer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discusssed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the Ipd to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not contain synced media like apps and music.

  • I changed computer and I want to transfer the contents of my ipod to the new computer. Is that possible?

My old computer broke and I bought a new one, but I'm having trouble transfering the contents of my iPod to the new computer, since I don't have my old computer anymore. Is it possible to sync my ipod without losing the old stuff????

i devices are not designed for unique storage of your media - i.e. the device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • If I installed itunes and music on a PC that died....can I download/import the music from my IPOD to a new itunes account?

If I installed Itunes and music on a PC that died --- can I download/import the music on my IPOD to a new ITunes account?

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software.  A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

I have the ipod Classic. My original library was on my old PC which I no longer have. Is it possible and if so - how? to transfer my libray from my ipod onto my new PC

There's a 3rd party program called copy trans suite that I use to move files from my ipod to my itunes library and/or my pc.  I bought it because my itunes library had become damaged and the only copy I had of it was on my classic.  Since then I've regularly backed up my itunes libary to prevent it from happening again.

  • Can you copy the contents of an iPod onto a new PC?

A friend of mine has an iPod and is considering buying a new PC. Because of circumstances he cannot get his library from his old PC. Is it possible for him to copy the contents of his iPod onto new PC to create a new library?

    David,
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy: http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=394618&messageID=1263275

    Hi There
You can only transfer purchased music from your iPod to iTunes using iTunes. However there are third party utilities that you can use to retrieve your music, just do a google search or have a look on http://www.versiontracker.com
    Hope this helps

  • How do I view the content of my Ipod Nano 3g in ITunes?

I am going from a shuffle to the new Nano 3g. How can I change certain songs etc., without being able to see what is actually on the Ipod? How do I view what is already on the Ipod?

Are you auto syncing the Nano or manually managing it?
Either way, when plugged into your computer and showing up in iTunes, next to the iPod icon on the left side of the iTunes screen is a right facing arrow (triangle). Click this to turn it down and the contents of the iPod show. The first one, "Library" is the one to click on to see the songs on there.

  • How can I replace my iTunes Library with the contents of my iPod, including the playlists?

I tried transferring the purchases, but it didn't move my playlists over. I have also tried backing my old library up to a disc, and putting it in my new computer, but it still didn't transfer my playlists.
Is there any way I can transfer my old itunes library from my old computer to my new computer, including the playlists?
I have heard people talk about replacing itunes with the contents of the ipod, but I'm not sure how to do it.

check out this post by Zevoneer.
if you have an iPod Touch, there are PhoneView and iRip.
as for playlists, check out the posts by Chris CA in this discussion.

  • How can I reinstate the contents of my ipod to my new PC?

I have a new computer and want to reinstall the contents of my 5th gen ipod - how can I do this? I have installed itunes to the new pc but this has created a brand new library from scratch - if I plug my ipod into this the 4500 songs that are on it cannot be accessed and the new itunes set up asks me if I want to replace the existing library with the new one and in the process will discard the 4500 songs.....how can I put them back on?

When your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you connect and get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer.
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
There is a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again

  • How do I get all the content on my IPod to sync with itunes after I reinstalled itunes after computer crashed, folders and songs no longer match?

My computer crashed back in Feb or March of this year and I just recently reinstalled itunes on it.  Once reinstalled itunes updated software.  Once this was all done I noticed that alot of songs on my IPod were no longer in itunes.  Also, the folders in itunes no longer matched what are on my IPod.  itunes says the computer is active for itunes and many songs on my IPod are on itunes but many are missing.  How do I get itunes to just sync and match what is on my IPod to include all songs and folders.  Many of the missing songs on my IPod and not in itunes are ones I purchased from itunes so they should have them.  I am getting very discouraged with itunes.  I tried to do a support call and pay the fee to have them call to address but I am stationed oversees and they would not accept my overseas number as valid.
Any help is greatly appreciated.  As stated, I just want the music now on itunes to match with my IPod to include folders.  Seems music got lost.  Any suggestions how to back up the music so if this happens again I do not have this issue.  I figured itunes would have my music or at a min just sync up what is on my IPod.
    Thanks gunner
