How do I view videos from links?

Hello all, I am a new mac user. I just got a Macbook Pro and I have a question. On my pc I used to be able to right click and download a link from a website, and then watch it. When I have tried to watch movies on my mac it comes up as a document of jumbled letters. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Glad that took care of it. Flip4Mac allows Quicktime to play most .wmv files, so between that and Apple's software, Flash, etc., you are mostly covered. You may also find the standalone player VLC helpful - that will play almost everything else (although not directly in your browser). Only main exception is DRM-protected wmv media files, which there is currently no way to play on the Mac.
VLC is here (would have pasted the link for Flip4Mac, but was posting from my iPod)

Thanks for the !

  • How do I view videos from my Panasonic SD40 camcorder that use the bmg format?

    I just bought a Panasonic SD40 camcorder but my IMAC will not read the SD card. I believe that the Panasonic is using the bmg format.
    Any suggestions?

    According to iMovie '11 Supported Cameras  your camera is supported by iTunes 11. I would recommend using the iMovie Tutorials.

    Any suggestions on how I can view videos on my iPad using a link to Picassa?  I can view pictures but not the videos.
    Thanks for any help.

    It's possible the videos are in a format that is not  compatable with iOS. You might check the app store for Picassa compatible apps, but no guarantee that would solve the issue.

    ''How can I view or retrieve a video from Firefox's cache''
    To actually view/retrieve the file from the cache and its web address you can use
    the "Cache Viewer" extension 32.8KB
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/cacheviewer/
    * http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox.htm#cacheviewer
    For you to be able to view the cached file you would have had to have watched the entire file.
    The latest version of the extension is 0.7b available in all versions you would have to override compatibility by any of these methods
    * checking or pick up one of the xpi versions in the reader comments for Firefox 6.0
    * extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0 set to False
    *: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Extensions.checkCompatibility
    * or with an extension "Add-on Compatibility Reporter" (84.0 KB) seems preferred in this group
    *:https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/
    There are also extensions such as Video downloader 132.8 KB
    * Download YouTube Videos + Flash Video Downloader / Download-Helper

    Hello Hese,
    try the following:
    1. delete preferences (com.apple.iMovie.plist) and empty the trash
    2. repair disc permissions with Disc Utility and reboot your mac
    3. use Diskwarrior or MacJanitor for disc clean-up
    4. disconnect any other firewire devices
    5. take off any non-system desktop pictures
    If nothing else helps, you might want to consider resetting your Firewire port(s)

    Pn the iPad/iPhone app, you can upload videos that were taken on the iPad/iPhone. You upload them the same way you do a photo, see this link:

    You can use SnapZ Pro X, which will screen record with sound any animation on the monitor into a QuickTime file, but it's expensive.
    If you look for Add-ons for Firefox, there are some that download Flash and YouTube videos to a file on your machine.

    How to install
    When you click a link, a download of the installer file occurs to your Downloads Folder usually located next to your Trash Can or in your Users Folder.
    Open the folder and double click (or File: Open) the download and icon can appear on your desktop which you open and inside is a installer package which you double click on to launch the installer.
    OS X will check the download to make sure you intended to start it and that it's not malware it knows about.
    Follow the installer instructions to install the software onto your computer and quit when finished.
    Some require the browsers to be closed first, others require the machine to be restarted to enable the software.
    Once the install is completed, remove any and all downloads from your Download folder, it's safer to keep this folder empty so you can keep track of what appears in there.
    Drive by downloads of malware can occur and reside in the Downloads folder, mixing in with files residing there and await your click to install.
