How do I wake my computer via ethernet?

I have a PowerMac that is connected to a Laser printer and I have to keep it on all the time so my other computers can print from it, how do I make it where that computer will automatically wake up when somebody tries to print?

Hi Kyle Treece;
The easiest solution to your problem might be to not allow the computer to sleep. Just allow the monitor to sleep and then when someone needs to use it, it will be there for them.

  • How do I wake my computer up by just moving the mouse?

I checked the settings and must not have adjusted the right one but ever since I updated to Lion instead of being able to wake my computer by moving the mouse (touching the trackpad) now I have to hit the spacebar.. Anyone know what setting I need to change to get it back the way I like it?

And many many other places on the net found with google.
Perhaps I should have made my post clearer, the default is click a mouse button OR use a key on the keyboard.

Sorry, I don't do Mac Rumors - and judging by the post dates, they were talking about issues with SL, not Lion (unless they were violating an NDA). I do know how to use Google.
In my case using Lion on both an iMac with mouse and magic trackpad and a Macbook with a trackpad, doing anything with the mouse or trackpad produces zero results. In checking with Apple, I was told that having to use the keyboard was the new default. So, some configurations may still allow wake-up with a mouse, but the intent appears to be for the keyboard to be the "wake-up alarm".

  • How do I connect a PC via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme router?

I just replaced an old Actiontec router with a new Apple Airport Extreme router to work with my Verizon FIOS service. Connection to all Apple products via ethernet or wireless works OK, however I cannot get the PC up and running via its ethernet connection to the Airport Extreme. Any help would be much appreciated.

If your other devices are working then it is probably the PC's IP configuration.
First, make sure that the PC is actually connected to the Extreme by verifying the lights are on at the Ethernet ports on the PC and the Extreme.
If you are using DHCP to manage the IP addresses then make sure that the PC is configured to "Obtain IP Address Automatically" for both IP versions 4 and 6.
When I replaced my Linksys w/ an Extreme I forgot that I had a couple devices configured with static (manual) IPs.  My old one used the "192.168.1.nn" and my Extreme defaulted to "10.0.1.nn". Once i converted all the static IPs to the correct subnet then all was good.

  • How can i connect/disconnect PPPoe via Ethernet connected time capsule??

I connected the time capsule with Ethernet.
I set connect to PPPoe with "Manual" option.
I could easily control "Connect/disconnect" pppoe using AIRPORT (in the menu bar). But I could not find a way to "Connect/disconnect" via ETHERNET. (No ETHERNET icon on menu bar anyway...)
Could somebody help? THanks a lot.

Have you consulted the printer's user manual for setting it up as an Ethernet printer? You will also need to delete your current printer in Print & Fax and when you Add the printer you will need to do so as an Ethernet printer. This means you will add it either as an IP printer using either LPR or IPP protocol - depends on what the printer supports. An Ethernet device requires an IP address that is either manually configured on the device or derived if the device supports DHCP. If the former then the IP address you configure for the printer must be within the range of IP addresses used by your router (typically 10.0.1.2-10.0.1.199 for an AEBS/TC.) This should be covered in the printer's user manual.

  • How do i connect a printer via ethernet?

    greetings.
i run an imac 20 inch late 2006 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.7.4 and i would like to connect a sharp al-1655cs printer/copier/scanner directly to the mac.  first off, i know sharp doesn't have a mac driver for this machine; but i'm hoping i can come up with some sort of "plain vanilla" solution.  i've tried to establish the connection via usb and ethernet with no results.  via usb, the mac identifies the sharp, thinks it delivers a print job, and 10 minutes later declares the job complete with no actual output.  via ethernet, i'm not able to add an acceptable ip address (the one given on the side of the machine 080014 6d3efc -- which i've tried in groups of two, three and four separated by periods or colons).  i do have a wifi router and could patch the printer into that but, frankly, i'd like to avoid buying a 20' ethernet cable.  i've looked far and wide across the interweb and am not finding any help specific to direct ethernet cabling a printer to a mac running running 10.7.4.  i'm pretty tech-capable, so don't be shy suggesting solutions.  any help to get this going would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, the software is only for Wintel machines. Sharp does state in its manual that the AL-1655CS can be used by Apple machines via the USB 2.0 port. But in reality, you need to be running Mac OS 10.3 and above to use the printing, network, and scanning applications native to OS X or through 3rd party applications, like Photoshop.

  • Internet via airport and other computer via ethernet and hub

    Is this possible?
    Network 1:
I have a macbookpro. I connect to the 'net via airport and a wireless router-modem. I use dhcp with manual address (192.168.1.5, because we have numerous computers here). All's sweet.
    Network 2:
I need to work on a linux box which doesn't have wireless. It's a pain to connect it to the wireless router directly (although this does work), so I have an ethernet cable and hub and cable to connect it to the mbp directly. I configure ipv4 manually and can telnet etc to the linux box (which has its own ipaddress specified already) IF the airport is disconnected.
But I want to run both at the same time. I know I can work on the linux box and surf at the same time IF I connect the linux box to the router (by ethernet cable). But what if I want to have the wireless and ethernet on my mbp together?
Do I need to specify different ip addresses on my mbp for the ethernet and wireless? I've set it both ways and it doesn't seem to work with them either the same or different. If I go to Network Port Configurations (in Network) and move "Airport" to the top, I can surf but not telnet to the linux box. If I have Ethernet higher in the list, I can telnet but not surf. This is the case whether the ip addresses are the same or different.
Is it possible to do what I want, or just not possible?
    No I don't have a crossover cable.

Realised that I needed two networks with different ids.

  • HT4259 how to configure extended network via ethernet

how to configure an extended network via ethernet

I assume that the Express is new, so that it still has the factory default settings.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express
Power up the Extreme and Express if they are not already powered up
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltities > AirPort Utility
Click on the tab in the upper left hand corner of the window that reads Other AirPort Base Stations (1)
Click on the AirPort Express xxxxxx
Wait a minute or two while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and then announces that the Express will be configured to extend your network
Enter a name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait 2-3 minutes while AirPort Utility configures the Express and the Express restarts
When you see the message that setup is complete, click Done
    That's it.

  • Extend network AND connect via ethernet?

How do I configure Airport Express to extend my network wirelessly and connect a computer via Ethernet?
I have 2 buildings at my church I am in charge of getting this to work in. The office building has a wireless network, the sanctuary has no ethernet or wireless at all. I can get a good signal to an Airport Express I just purchased inside the sanctuary and I am using that to feed internet to the PowerMac G4 that doesnt seem to see the network from the Office area. I was told that this could also extend my wireless network to the other computers in the sanctuary. I have not been able to get this to happen.
I succesfully have it in "Join a Network" mode and it grabs the signal and gets internet to the G4. As soon as I change the mode to "Extend my network", I lose all connectivity with the network. In addition, no matter what mode I am in, I can't see this Airport from any devices wirelessly either in the utility or in the Airport browser.
So...how do I allow other machines/tablets/etc to use this airport to hook in to our network AND use the Ethernet line to feed the G4?
    Thanks,
    Joey

I am going from an Airport Extreme 4th gen (dual band) to an Airport Express 2nd gen (just replaced thanks to the Genius Bar, it used to be a 1st gen. single band) and then picking it up with another Express 2nd gen.
    That.....is the problem.
I had understood from your initial post that you had an AirPort Extreme and wanted to extend to several AirPort Express devices.
Apple's "extend" setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. The AirPort Extreme would be the "hub" and the AirPort Expresses would reside at the end of the "spokes".
You can have multiple AirPort Express devices located at the ends of the spokes, but in order to "extend", each one of the them must connect directly to the "hub".....not to another extending device at the end of another spoke.
What you are trying to set up is a "hub", "relay" and "remote".  Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" setup does not work this way.
The distant remote can pick up a signal from an Express at the end of a spoke acting as an extender, but the distant remote cannot "extend" the signal from an Express at the end of a spoke using wireless.
The distant remote is actually joining the network....that is why the Ethernet port is active....but unfortunately,  there will be no wireless signal from this device.
Somewhere, an Express will need to connect back to the Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection. Then that Express can "extend" to another Express using wireless.

  • Cannot print over wifi but only via ethernet

    Hello,
i  have c4780 hp printer, i have installed it on laptop via ethernet. All works fine.
If i unplugg network cable on laptop and use only wireless to connect on my network, the printer cannot print.
    I have a dlink 2740b wireless router.
there are particular setting to insert in router configuration?
i have try to install on other pc via wifi but result is the same.
just i plug the network cable the printer work immedialtly..
    Why?
    Thanks
    Giulio

I am confused.  Is the printer connected to your router via ethernet or you computer via ethernet?  If to the router, how was it initially connected (wired or wireless) when you set it up?
What operating system(s) are you using?

  • Airport express won't extend network via ethernet but shows GREEN (HELP!!)

I have the following routers setup up the same network and are working.
10.0.1.1 Airport Extreme (connected to hardline from IP)
10.0.1.2 Time Capsule 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to computer via ethernet)
10.0.1.3 Time Capsule 2 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox1)
10.0.1.4 Airport Express 1 (extending network and providing internet connection to Xbox2)
    Not working correctly
10.0.1.43 Airport Express 2 (wanting to set this router up to extend network to plug into desktop)
The router seems to join the network fine and will show GREEN but doesn't show a similar IP address as the rest of the routers. It also doesn't provide any internet connection via ethernet to any computer, the network pref page says that it shows RED and that nothing is connected to the computer for internet but airport shows GREEN.
Reset the router multiple times, tried every which way of setting it up and no go. I also tried assigning it a IP and not using DHCP and gave it a 10.0.1.5 and still the same outcome.
Right now just at complete loss as to what to try next.

Sorry, the older version of the Express does not have the option to  "extend a wireless network", which is the setting on the new Express that provides more wireless coverage and also enables the Ethernet port.
What you want to do can be done with a different setting..."participate in a WDS network" on both the Time Capsule and Express, but I am not recommending that you do this because WDS operates only in "g" wireless mode. Your Time Capsule would lose most of its performance in this setting and the network would slow down tremendously...defintely not what you want for gaming.
You'll have the best performance if you connect the PS3 directly to one of the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable. If it is not possible to run the cable, the next best performance option would be to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the Ethernet signal over the existing AC wiring in your home.

  • Sharing internet while hooked up via ethernet

    Hi,
I want to hook two computers (one 10.3 one 10.4) via ethernet to each other. I also want to hook one up to an airport via its airport card then share the internet (the 10.4 one is the one connected to the airport).
How would I go about this? I can't figure out how to allow airport connection via tcpip while I'm using tcpip for the ethernet connection.
I am sure this is posted here somewhere but I can't find anything specific (step by step instructcions).
I have figured out how to network the two computers via ethernet.
    Thanks!
    Misha

    Hi Misha,
The exact thing you want to do is configured via:
System Preferences > Sharing > Internet
    (Ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html)
In your case you will set this up on the 10.4 machine, where you will share your Aiport connection and allow other computers to connect via the ethernet connection. (ie. airport is set up in Network preferences, and ethernet is set up in Sharing preferences)
Note the advice about turning on Personal Web sharing also. (This should mean your 10.4 firewall will allow pass-thru connections from the 10.3 machine)

  • No Internet via Ethernet but ok via wifi

Hi all, Bt home hub 2.0 Firmware 8.1.H.U (type A) Vista home premium sp2 I connect my desktop to my home hub via Ethernet cable. I connect other devices to my hub via wifi. I can connect all devices, wired and wireless, to the hub ok and can get to the hub manager. It reports connectivity to broadband is ok. My wifi devices can all access the Internet ok and download data and open web pages. My desktop cannot. The network and sharing centre shows Local Only. If I reboot the pc and restart the hub, I get local + Internet for no more than a couple of minutes but then it reverts to local only. Yet still my wifi devices are ok. Have tried swapping cable to a different port on the hub. Orange and green lights showing as normal at the network port on my pc. Suspect that the trouble exists between the pc and the hub. Has anyone any ideas? Assuming it doesn't fix itself I will try digging out a different cable and also attaching another computer via Ethernet cable to see what happens. Thanks Ian

The problem you have overcome is the issue surrounding the failure of the DHCP allocation and lease renewal within the home hub. It fails to maintain the association between the MAC (hardware) address of your network adapter, and the IP address/default gateway.
Why this happens it is difficult to say. It could be related to the Vista problem mentioned on this forum on an earier posting.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
If this also applies to Windows 7, then this would explain the problem.
You will probably find that when it disconnects, you lose the default gateway of 192.168.1.254
By giving it a static IP address, DHCP plays no part in the connection.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • How to connect a pc via Ethernet to an Airport Extreme

For about a year I have had an Airport Extreme running my iBook laptop on wifi and the iMac on Ethernet. I also have an IBM Thinkpad (T/P) running Windows 2000 which I wanted to connect via Ethernet cable to the AE and get on the internet to use various ham radio applications written for peecee's only. So far I have not been able to get the T/P to connect to the web, trying every way to get the thing to connect. The T/P is a second hand unit from work and I have no manual for it. There is also little documentation in the AE booklet concerning Ethernet and non-Mac gear. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can make this work, or another website that may have more specific info?
    Message was edited by: bob.c

You are absolutely right about nothing with Windows being easy..... The ethernet cable is plugged in and I went to Network Connections and followed the wizard. Now I have a small icon on the right side of the bottom bar, looks like two computer screens but only one is green. A right click on it says the local area network is connected and sending 100 Mbps but receiving zero. If I go to Tools/Internet options, I can go thru the Internet Connection wizard for setting up a LAN. One of the pages asks to configure the proxy settings and has two choices: automatic discovery or "Use automatic configuration script" with a box labeled "Address". I don't know what to put in this address but have tried the IP address and the router address: no joy. There is also a check box for Manual Proxy server and I have tried both Yes and No....again, no joy. It's as though the T/P sees the internet doorway but can't bring anything back thru the door! Any further ideas sure would help. Thanks!
