How do I wipe Mac OS X 10.6.8 w/out disc?

Hi I just bought a new Mac Book Air and I want to ship my old mac book 10.6.8 back to Apple. Can i wipe all the info off of it with the original disc? Or do I have to manually delete files?

If your MacBook has Firewire, you can use Target Disk Mode to repartition and reformat your machine while connected using Disk Utility from the Host Mac:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
But do indicate to Apple you lost the installer disc for the machine, so if they do refurbish it, they can indicate the machine needs one that someone might want.
Also note, before reformatting, it might be nice to see if you can apply this firmware update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904
So the next user can use the internet restore to install 10.7 or later if supported.

1: The absolute best way Grade A method would be to remove the storage drive and replace with another, melt the old drive in a +1500º F kiln, or smash it to tiny bits with a sledgehammer / hydraulic press and distribute the pieces into the trash as widespread as possible.
Then hold c booting from a OS X install disk (10.6 or earlier if th emachine came with that) or hold option key booting from a 10.7 install USB ($69, no user ID associated) and install your OS onto the new drive and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
2: If you don't want to replace the drive but don't want a wealthy individual, corporation or government using special equipment to read most of your data.
Then hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase with 7x overwrite on the OS X boot partition will do. Takes many hours to complete.
There might be  small bits left in mapped off sectors, journaled drives, your basically trusting the drive makers / OS maker to erase your drive completely. Then reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
3: If you don't want to replace the drive, not all that paranoid, but don't want most anyone using special software like DataRescue to read your deleted data off the drive, then hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase with Zero will do. Takes about a few hours. Then reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen.
4: If your not the least bit concerned someone could read your deleted data, simply hold c booting from a OS X install disk, (or command r booting from 10.7 Recovery) and using Disk Utility to Erase (with Security Option will do.) Takes about a few seconds. Then quit DU, reinstall your OS and shutdown at the Welcome screen.

  • How do I wipe the data from my Mac if I sell it on to a new owner

I am selling my version 1 Mac book air, running on Lion, how do I wipe the data from the machine but leave the OS in place and working for the new owner?
    thanks

To prepare a computer for sale or donation, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you paid for an upgrade OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstallthe original OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.)
The new owner will have to repurchase the software, if need be, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer them either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

aha yes - Lion has changed you harddrive setup and added a "recover partition" Now it gets - not technical - but time consuming.
    try:
insert your Snow Leopard installer DVD.
    Reboot
Immediately After startup sound, hold down ALT.
You'll be presented with several options. Select your install DVD and continue.
    If it doesn't fail:
Once the installer has started, go t the top menu and select "disc utility"
go to the "partition" screen and erase all partitions back to one single partition
return to the installer and install that older OS X version
give to buyer minus the price of a Lion upgrade
If it fails, go to step 1 and boot from your "recovery drive".
once the installer has sarted, go to the top menu and select "disk utility"
erase the drive partition that used to contain OSX Lion - this will remove your private data, all apps and OSX Lion.
Restart, hold own "eject" and remove the DVD, and shut down again.
You'll have to hand it over to the new buyer in this state. Tell him the machine will boot into the Lion installer but he'll have to create an App Store account to download and install OS X Lion. One again, give him a reduced price equal to the price of the Lion upgrade. Way I see it, no other options remain.

  • HT4061 iPad stolen - how do I wipe personal text messages out? Synced with my apple account and cell number but not showing in iCloud.

My iPad was stolen - I just synced it with my cellphone number and updated to the new OS the day before it's stolen. Why is the iPad not showing up in my iCloud account so that I can locate it and wipe the data?
I know that the iPad is likely still full of my text messages because I tried deleting them on my phone thinking it would also delete them from the iPad. Instead, the iPad re-populated all if the text messages I deleted back in to my iPhone.
Help! I don't want these people having my personal text messages. How can I wipe an iPad/break the sync with my phone when I don't have the iPad anymore?

What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
    iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • How can I wipe out Windows completely?

    Hi all,
Since my attempt yesterday to have a go at Windows 8 was a bit of a flop due to bad drivers, I erased the Bootcamp partition with Disk Utility and merged it back to the main one, and went on using my Mac as per usual.
But this morning when I switched it on, guess what... it tried to boot Windows and gave me the black screen with "no bootable disk blah blah", so now I have to start it pressing the Option key even if there's (suppossedly) no trace of Windows.
Any hints on how to completely wipe it out?
    I'm on a MacBook Pro 13" mid 2010 running 10.6.8.
    Thanks!

Go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select OS X. To delete Windows, you have to use Boot Camp Assistant

Insert your original gray startup disc and reatart while holding the C key, choose your language and at the next screen select Disk Utilities from the menu bar on top. Select your hard drive and click erase. When DU is done quit and it will take you back to the installer screen. Install OS X. When it's done shut off the macbook so that the new owner can set it up as their own when they get it.

  • How do I reinstall mac OSX 10.6.4?

how do I reinstall mac OSX 10.6.4?

    Reinstall 10.6.4? exactly?
Only if you have 10.6.4 on machine specific disks that came with your computer (or you can call Apple for the disks)
However if you Software Update, Apple will bring your machine up to 10.6.8 automatically, with all the security and bug fixes. No choice to stop at 10.6.4 exactly.
10.6 is the Snow Leoaprd operating system, 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 or 10.6.8 is the updates to 10.6 that also occur when you run Software Update under the Apple menu.
So if your machine originally came with 10.5.x something and you upgraded via the 10.6.3 white retail disk, if you Software Update, you can't get to 10.6.4, it will just bring you to 10.6.8.
So if you want to reinstall 10.6.4 specifically, it would have to be the machine specific disks if your Mac orignally came with 10.6.4, else you will be force upgraded to 10.6.8 from any 10.6 version.
Now there are two ways to resinstall OS X, one way is to write say 10.6.8 over with 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 via the disks, and only 10.6 is overwritten, not your third party programs (most) and not your files. However you will need to Software Update, because your Apple related support files have been changed.
See #8 Reinstall Just OS X for that then Software Update to 10.6.8
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to wipe the entire drive or boot partition, then install 10.6 from the disk, then you don't have too Software update to 10.6.8 to get all the bug/security fixes if you don't want too.
I don't know what you want exactly, but I'll give you the links.
