Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.

If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted.
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall an older OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from physical media, deliver those to the new owner.
If you're selling the machine, or donating it in working order, and it originally shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, then you have the option of installing either from the discs that came with it or from a retail Snow Leopard disc (which you must then transfer with the machine.) The buyer should understand that if he doesn't get the original discs from you, he won't get the bundled iLife applications or the Apple Hardware Test. Replacements for the original discs can be ordered from Apple.
The new owner will have to redownload any software that came from the App Store, including OS X upgrades, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer those either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

aha yes - Lion has changed you harddrive setup and added a "recover partition" Now it gets - not technical - but time consuming.
try:
insert your Snow Leopard installer DVD.
Reboot
Immediately After startup sound, hold down ALT.
You'll be presented with several options. Select your install DVD and continue.
If it doesn't fail:
Once the installer has started, go t the top menu and select "disc utility"
go to the "partition" screen and erase all partitions back to one single partition
return to the installer and install that older OS X version
give to buyer minus the price of a Lion upgrade
If it fails, go to step 1 and boot from your "recovery drive".
once the installer has sarted, go to the top menu and select "disk utility"
erase the drive partition that used to contain OSX Lion - this will remove your private data, all apps and OSX Lion.
Restart, hold own "eject" and remove the DVD, and shut down again.
You'll have to hand it over to the new buyer in this state. Tell him the machine will boot into the Lion installer but he'll have to create an App Store account to download and install OS X Lion. One again, give him a reduced price equal to the price of the Lion upgrade. Way I see it, no other options remain.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.

Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Select your hard drive and click erase. When DU is done quit and it will take you back to the installer screen. Install OS X. When it's done shut off the macbook so that the new owner can set it up as their own when they get it.

I've tried the restore from iTunes already. Each time I eventually get the message: "The iPhone could not be restored, An unknown error occurred (21)."
Quick recap: iPhone can not stay on without being hooked to power or the PC. Once plugged in, it can only display the connect to ITunes screen. Once connected to iTunes, this message appears: "iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes." I hit OK, then the Restore button, then the Restore and Update button when asked if I'm sure. Then it starts "Extracting Software." When that's done, it says "Preparing iPhone for restore," and then you can hear the phone disconnecting and reconnecting several times until the error message .."could not be restored..." pops up, ending the process.
I've looked up error 21 and it comes up as a Security or hardware issue. Security isn't the issue, the hardware/software simply won't stay on. What next? Again, I'd like to sell it for parts, but need to wipe it. Is everything to wipe stored on the sim card? Is there a way to simply wipe that, maybe using another iPhone?
