You can not take pictures with iPhoto - is this by chance an iPhone question? on the iPhone you use two fingers to squeeze the photo and then use the zoom slider that appears at the bottom of the screen

I don't think Firefox has a slider to do that but it uses shortcuts.

I find the zoom slide quite easily when using the computer screen on my Macbook. However, when I project the images onto a screen the slide for some reason disappears. Any ideas?

window is an icon that looks like a box with arrows

Because the screen aspect ratio is different that the camera aspect ratio. The only way it could fill the screen vertically would be either to stretch/distort the photos vertically or to cut off some of the photos on the sides.

Fortunately You can define custom keyboard shortcuts for those menu actions where there is no pre-defined one. I went to Tools/Preferences, then Shortcut Keys, searched for the Zoom word and found the Category: Data Modeler, Command Zoom In and Zoom Out and assigned the Ctrl-Alt-Up and Ctrl-Alt-Down combinations (these were not used yet for anything else) and it works nicely, plus the shortcut assignment is also visible on the View menu after you made the assignment.
Mouse Wheel actions? Might come as an enhancement but the keyboard shortcuts might be good enough till it arrives.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.
