How do images edited in CS5 not return to LR3?

I have just upgrade to CS5 and then downloaded LR3 trial version as I am waiting for the software to arrive.
I was editing a shot in LR3, then decided to edit in CS5 for content aware fill to remove some wires that I could not work around.  After completing the edit in CS5, it asked me to save the images and I said yes.  After that, it did not return the file to LR3.  After doing several other edits, I finally did a search on my system to find the images that I edited in CS5.
To my surprise, they were in different directories on my system!
Is there something that we now have to specify to get them to return to LR?  I would like to keep the images all in one collection since this is what I have done in the past.
It also did not ask me when going to CS5 if I wanted to use the edited version like it did in V1 & 2.  Has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks,
David

Did you have any filters set in LR to exclude any other images? ... there seems to be a bug in PS returning images with ratings, color labels and filters  ... or any of the above. Try removing the filters to see if your edited image is there.
The team is looking into the issue.

  • Images edited in Photoshop not showing up correctly in Lightroom after saving

    Hi,
I recvently got Adobe cloud and upgraded from Lightroom 3 to 4.  Since the upgrade I have been having issues with Lightroom not correctly displaying images edited in Photoshop.  Instead of the photoshop image it creates a new jpeg and displays that in the library.  the PSD does not get loaded into the library.
I am taking a jpeg from my library and shoosing the edit in Photoshop function.  I am selecting edit a copy, but have tried it with original and with edit a copy with lightroom adjustments as well with the same results.
In Photoshop I am duplicating the base layer, upscaling the image, running some filters, adding dsome adjustment layers.
I save the image in Photoshop format back to the original folder where the initial jpeg was in the Lightroom library.  I save it with maximize compatibility on.
When I go back to Lightroom, the catalog displays two files, the initial jpeg and an identical copy to it, NOT the new photoshop file with alterations.  If I go to the folder the images are housed in in Finder using the show in Finder command both images link to the same original jpeg.  The photoshop edited file is there in the folder but does not show up in Lightroom unless I drag and drop it.
I have turned off all filters and made sure the sort is sorting by name.  The image does not automatically show up in Lightroom after editing.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks for any help!
PS. I did search the topic and there are threads from 2007 and lightroom 2 but their solution was to start from scratch essentially and I have a carefully tagged, starred, and labeled catalog of 30,000+ images and really don't want to do that

Images that are edited in Photoshop will be displayed automatically in Lr only when the image-file saved in Photoshop is the same as the one opened from Lr.
You say you open a JPG from Lr, then edit it in PS by - among other things - adding some layers. Layers are not supported in the JPG-format so you have to either save it as a psd or as a jpg-copy.
In either case this is not the same image file as the one opened in Lr, so it will have to be imported into Lr to show up. If you would flatten your image after editing in PS and then do a <save> to your JPG - not a <save as> - it will show up in Lr.
PS: the only exception is when you open a Raw image from Lr in PS and you save it in PS in the file format specified in Lr for external editing. The saved file will automatically show in LR.

  • Likely bug with external editing (in CS5 not CS6 beta) and edited image not showing back up in LR

I have come across something strange today that I've not seen before. I'm running LR 4.0 under Win7 64-bit. I usually use Photoshop CS6 beta as my external editor, but invoke CS5 when I have to use some tools that don't support the beta. Here is the scenario:
    * I have CS5 open
    * I externally edit an image in CS5 and Save it from CS5 when I'm done
    * The edited image does not show up in LR
    * I close LR and reopen it
    * There is the edited image!
I have duplicated this many times this evening. I don't think I've seen it when I've used CS6 beta.

Something strange is going on because I had the behavior reported of edited image not showing up after using another filter, Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

  • Images edited externally do not appear in catalog.

Before I upgraded to CS6 and ACR 8.1, LR would properly catalog the externally edited file and it would stack next to the original file.
But now, when I save the file in Photoshop, I would see that the filename change from RAW to Tiff, and the image would save into the source folder. However, there is no file of it in my LR catalog. I would have manually import the externally edited file into the catalog, which I'm sure this is not how it's supposed to work.
Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Thanks very much in advance. This is frustating for the workflow. :/
    System:
    OSX 10.8.4
    2.8 GHz i7
    8GB RAM
    Software Versions:
    LR 5.0
    CS 6.0.13
    ACR 8.1.0.43
    LR 5 External Editing Settings:
    Edit in Photoshop CS6
    Format: TIFF
    Color Space: ProPhoto RGB
    Bit: 16
    Res: 300
Compression: none (I keep choosing LZW, but it apparently never remembers my pref)
    "Stack with Original" is checked
Additional External Editor is not setup.

    UPDATE:
The problem is this: I have a server running WHS, which houses all my media.
I tested this hypothesis by putting some raw files on my desktop and when I externally edited one of those, LR worked properly and cataloged the externally edited file.

  • In the Elements 12 Organizer, how do I edit/create tag notes for the people and places categories?

I upgraded from Elements 4.0 to 12.0, and everything seemed to upgrade correctly except the tag notes I created for people and places under the People and Places categories.  Thankfully, the tag notes I created under the Events category transferred over, but I'm not looking forward to manually transferring over the info in the People and Places tag notes, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

PSE13 introduced a new thumbnails display : the adapative view. It's active by default. The thumbnails are resized to fill entirely the Media section; the plus side is that it shows more thumbnails or bigger ones; that is very useful for visual browsing and searching. But it hides the texts (file name...) and the version sets icons.
Simply revert to the old 'detailed view' from the view menu or keep in mind the shortcut: Ctrl D. Your choice will stick next time.

  • Fireworks image editing palette not responding

Image editing palette does not respond. I need to go to the filters menu at the top of the page to sharpen etc. I notice that this is a flash-driven panel.
Adobe need to work on it anyway because it is absolutely infuriating that the adjustment dialogs pop up right in the centre of the screen (usually where most people want to see their changes previewed).
Anyhow, the dialog is an annoyance, but the palette not working is a fault/bug worthy of immediate attention unless anyone knows a fix.
    I am using Fireworks 11.1.0.205

    Hi Neil,
I had the same issue as you; the 'Image Editing' panel was not responding. I figured out that the problem was with Flash. I quitted Fireworks, downloaded the newest version of Adobe Flash Player, installed it, then restarted Fireworks. All of a sudden the 'Image Editing' panel was responding and working again. Problem solved...
I'm glad I found a solution. I really like Fireworks because it improves my workflow for webdesign and fastens development time after the design is finished BUT I'm really not happy with the huge amount of bugs this piece of software has...

  • My IT department transferred images from my Blackberry to my Iphone, they are in "Photo library". there is 1500  images, many are duplicates and when I hit edit, delete is not an option. how do i delete the duplicate images?

my IT department set up my Iphone and transferred the images from my Blackberry. I have over 1500 images showing in "Photo Library" and lots of them are duplicates (same image). When I hit edit it will not allow me to delete them, delete is not an option shown. How do I get rid of the duplicates?
In Photo library, when I hit edit the only avail options are share or add to. Please help, i dont want 1500 images on the phone.

Are they really duplicates or are you simply referring to the Photo Library?
Just as a song is in your itunes library and the exact same song can be accessed via a playlist, all synced photos are in the Photo Library and those exact same photos ( not duplicates) can be accessed from the chose folder/album.
You delete these pica the same way you put them there.  The sync process.  Deselect them in itunes and sync.

How do I set up CS5.5 educator edition pack when instructions do not match info on my CS5.5 package?

I have a 22-space alphanumeric product code for my Adobe creative suite 5.5 web premium package.
It does not have the 24-space alphanumeric code that is the product code sequence asked for when signing up for adobe procuct code approval.  Adobe keeps asking for a correct code and I only have the one they gave me in the package, called a product code, but adobe keeps rejecting it.
Also, the program never loads correctly - it says this at the end of the 45-minute loading from the disc.  That is getting awfully tiresome as well.  I have everything closed as they request, and do not know how to turn off the virus protection which is windows defender.
Also, mine is a new teacher edition, and when I go to the page for getting my approval, it will not open that page.  I have used Adobe products before with typical annoying hassle but always eventual success.  So this really is perturbing.

  • CS5 not updating LR3 Catalog properly on return

    Hi,
I'm going crazy with what looks like a bug in the SW - but may be operator error.
Starting in LR3 Grid view that is filtered on a keyword, I select a JPG.   I want to create a PSD copy that has a text layer and have the PSD staked on top of the JPG in LR when I return from CS5.  I had been doing this in LR2 and CS3 but it does not seem to wrok the same with LR3 and CS5.  I can't recall exactly how I got this to work in LR2 & CS3 but I belive my steps were similar to the following.  The main difference is that in LR2/CS3 it worked and in LR3/CS5 I have the problem indicated below.
    Here are my steps...
    1)  I right click on a JPG image (in the LR3 grid showing images filtered on a keyword) and select edit in Photoshop CS5.  I then select "Edit a copy" from the popup (I've also tried "Edit a cooy with LR adjustments")
    2)  This creates a 2nd jpg file with "edit" in the file name on my hard drive and opens the image in CS5
    3)  I add a Text layer to the photo.
    3)  I then close the image in CS5 and it asks if I want to update it and I say Yes
    4)  I then get the "Save As" dialog and save the image as a PSD which saves a 3rd image on my HD as a PSD (does not have "edit" in file name)
    5)  I then go back to LR and I see in the filtered grid that I now have my original jpg, and an "edit" jpg, marked as 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 - but no PSD
    6)  However, if I unfilter the grid, I see all 3 images,  the original jpg (3 of 3),  the "edit" jpg (2 of 3), and an a psd (1 of 3)
    7)  Now, here's what's driving me crazy....  All 3 images have the exact Metadata, including the exact same keywords which means that all 3 should have been visible in the filtered view.
    8)  OK,  so I now refilter the grid on the keyword that all 3 images in that stack have but only the 2 jpg's show up.  This is crazy.  All 3 should be visible.
    9)  So, I go back and unfilter the grid again, revealing the PSD along with the two jpg's.
    10)  Now, I remove the keyword from the PSD (uncheck it in the keyword list),  then add the same keyword back (check it in the keyword list), and again filter by that keyword
    11)  Now I have all three images visible with the PSD on the top of the stack.
Q1 - Why did I have to remove and re-add the keyword to get the PSD to show up in the filtered view?  Is this a bug?
Q2 - Is there a better way to go to CS5 and create a PSD hopefully without having a 2nd JPG created as well?
Q3 -  Is there a way to add a text overlay in LR3 directly to the jpg without having to go to CS5 at all?
    Appreciate any help anyone has.
                       Thanks -- Dan

Thanks, but I guess PSE works differently.
I don't get a place to specify TIFF or PSD format when the image is passed to PS
Here is also some new info.
I applied all the latest "updates" to the LR3 and CS5  SW and now the symptoms are different.
    1)  When I "edit in CS5"  I no longer get a jpg created on my HD
    2)  When I "close" the image in CS5,  it asks me if I want to save it.  I say "yes" and it gives me the "Save As" dialog with PSD preloaded in the file type, the original folder preloaded in the location, and the file name is preloaded with the original name pluse "edit".
    3)  After saving, I flip back to LR and my filtered grid and here is what I find.
    a)  There is no image selected in the grid.  In other words the original jpg file is no longer selected (highlighted) and no other image in the grid is either
    b)  All the info in the right panel seems to be for the psd.  For example, the File Type says "Photoshop Document" and the Metadata Date is seconds ago.
    c)  All the keywords, rating stars, labels, title, caption, etc are present as well and the same as the jpg which is what I would expect.  This indicates that the LR catalog has been updated.
    4)  Unfiltering the grid makes the PSD visible and it is 1 of 2 with the jpg being 2 of 2 which is correct.
    5)  Both images have exactly the same keywords as evidenced by no "*"s in the Keywording section, and all the other keywords having a check mark (when both images selected) rather than a dash.
    6)  Even after synchronizing the psd metadata from the jpg metadata, re-applying the grid filter which happened to be in effect when I went I sent the jpg to CS5, still does not show the PSD file in the grid.
    7)  Howevr, filtering the grid by a different keyword that both images have in common does show the psd in the grid.
    8)  The only way (so far) that I have been able to get the psd to show up in the grid when the grid if filtered by the orignal keyword is to unfilter the grid, then uncheck that keywork in the keyword list, then re-check it.  After doing that it now appears in the grid when filtered by that keyword.
It seems that the logic that decides which images to show in the grid based on the filters is ignoring the keyword that the grid was filteredby when the image was sent to and returned from CS5 - but is only ignored for the returned psd image.
I'm pretty sure this is a bug.  Does anyone know how to report a bug to Adobe?
    Thanks -- Dan

  • Editing in Photoshop CS5 and return to LR5 as .jpg

    Hello,
I am fairly new to LR, so this may be a stupid question, but here goes....
Occasionally I have a photo that I have made my edits to in LR5 and now want to take into Photoshop CS5 to do a few minor things and I understand how that is done. My issue is that when I save it and it is brought back into LR it is now a .psd (I know that is because I have set it up that way in my LR Preferences). That is great when I want to save detailed layers with edits from photoshop incase I need to go back in and tweak them, however in the instance where the PS edits are so minor and no layers were created, I really don't want the massive file size that comes along with the .psd version. Is it possible to bring it back to LR as a .jpg? If there is a better way to handle this in my workflow please let me know.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Ria

Yes, I understand your concerns with storage space.
I would also keep the CR2 files; I shoot with Nikons and keep my NEFs.
I don't know if converting to DNG is actually such a good idea. They are called a Raw format but the more I read about that the more doubtful I become.
Adobe says that converting to DNG would be good in case the original Raw-format from camera would not be supported any more.
But Nikon and Canon have been around for quite some time - maybe longer than Adobe - and in today's corporate world there is no guarantee for permanent DNG-support either.
So it seems to me that you could stop saving DNGs since you are saving and keeping your CR2s anyway, which I would recommend.
In the past I have also edited many (if not most) of my images in PS, mostly for the reason that the spotting tool in Lr had npt been up to the task.
But that has changed with Lr5. I did some extensive spotting on some images in Lr5 recently, and it is now just as easy - maybe easier - than it is in PS.
As far as tonal and color corrections go I find that Lr is superior to PS. Naturally there is no way around PS if you need layers.
I would suggest that you have a thorough look at your workflow and ask yourself if it is really necessary that you edit in PS "for a couple of minor edits".
So you could possibly avoid amassing huge amounts of PSDs/TIFFs.
A 12-quality JPG is most probably not inferior in quality to a 8-bit TIFF or PSD.  But a JPG is always a 8-bit image, whereas the other formats give you the option of saving as 16-bits, and that's what you should do if quality is a concern. You say that you have to create JPGs anyway for printing or web-use.
But that does not mean that you have to save as JPG after editing. I treat JPGs as expendables. After uploading I delete them from my system. In Lr I can always create a JPG on the fly from the original. It makes no sense for me to have JPGs sitting around.
BTW: Read this if you are interested in the question if you should use PSDs or TIFFs:http://www.teddillard.com/2009/03/tiff-vs-psd-schewe-via-luminous.html

  • External Editing - does not add word 'edit' when returned to LR3

I have set up Lightroom3 preferences as shown by Martin Evening. After sending an image from LR3 to Photoshop CS5 to work on, then in SC5 just using the 'save' option, the word 'edit' is not added to the returned image in Lightroom. It would be useful to have this suffix. Advice please

    Try this:
Select a photo from the Library that you want to edit in PS and pres Ctrl+E
Check edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments and select either Tiff or PSD
Make your changes in PS and press Ctr+S to save and click OK to overwrite the file created by Lightroom.
Click Ctrl+W to close the image in PS and then return to Lightroom.

  • How can I edit a RAW image in Adobe Bridge and/or Photoshop?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs. Even when taken as RAW images. With iPhoto 09, you could do a search of the IMG_#### listed in iPhoto, and a normally-hidden folder full of the original downloaded RAW images turned up in the search. Now, in iPhoto 11, the RAW images newly downloaded DO NOT show up in any system searches (using 10.8.4. It was bad enough when they were hidden... now they are virtually gone.
I want to use iPhoto for organization and some editing, but some photos I want to work with in the RAW format and save as TIFFs. How do I do that?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs.
Drag and Drop and Media Browsers access the iPhoto Previews only. No conversion, just the previews.
With 10.8 Spotlight no longer searches within packages, that's to protect the inexperienced user from trashing his or her library inadvertently - as directly accessing the file can do.
To use Raws with an external editor:
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    But there's a kludge here.
iPhoto sends a copy of the file to Photoshop. In the case of a Jpeg you simply save and it all comes back to iPhoto seamlessly. However, if you use a Save As then Photoshop is creating a new file and iPhoto knows nothing about this.
Now here's the catch with Raws. You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • How do I save image and text as a single image in InDesign CS5.0?

How do I save an image and text as one image in InDesign CS5.0? NOT 5.5.
I need to save the image as a 72-dpi, jpg file for ePub purposes. I designed a book and am handing it off to someone for ePub.
    This is what I've tried:

In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
    HELP!!!

In all cases, the type looks terrible. It doesn't seem to matter whether I copy or place into Photoshop, though placing is slightly better.
Naturally what you did will result in rasterized text. Did you preview with high quality settings?
Are you sure the people who will handle that downstream need pixel images and do you have the exact pixel dimensions needed?
Why did you place the image back in Indesign, by the way?

  • How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp

How can I edit lightroom 5 smart previews on mac book pro (mbp) when the lightroom 5 master image files are on my external hard drive is disconnected from the mbp? So far when I try to disconnect the external HD from the mbp, I get the following pop up window: The disk "external hard drive A" couldn't be ejected because "Lightroom" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject this disk again. When I do that and restart Lightroom 5, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Select Catalog screen pops up but doesn't list my external hard drive A as a choice.
I've reviewed Adobe's Lightroom Help | Smart Previews Lightroom 5 web page and still haven't been able to figure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Your internal HDD. by default, is named 'Macintosh HD'. From what information you supplied, it looks like there is already a Lightroom catalog installed on you local (internal) HDD using the standard naming convention Adobe uses as well as a Lightroom catalog on your external drive which you created. To be sure of which catalog Lightroom is loading when it starts up, To do this, start Lightroom as you normally would. After it starts, select the Lightroom menu item, then select the Catalog Preferences item and finally, navigate to the General tab. The Location information will tell you exactly what catalog Lightroom is opening by default. This will likely be the Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog on your external HDD. Once that is confirmed, you are ready to proceed. As an additional test/verification, you can shut down Lightroom and, this time, start Lightroom while holding down the ALT/OPTION key. This will cause Lightroom to pause and display a screen which will allow you to chose a different catalog to open. Navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder and select the Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat file. When Lightroom comes up, there should be no previews or folders as this catalog should be empty. Now you can be certain which catalog is being used and which catalog has all your data and you are ready to migrate your current catalog. Shut down Lightroom.
To migrate your current catalog, use Finder to locate your Photography Mac Book Pro Versions folder on your external drive. Select the folder and select COPY from the context menu. Next, use Finder to navigate to the /Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder on you internal HDD. You can start at the Macintosh HD level and work your way down by opening each level (Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures). Select the /Pictures folder and then select PASTE... from the context menu. When the COPY/PASTE is complete, you should see the following files on the Macintosh HD:
    Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom/ and
Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions
The Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Lightroom folder will contain the empty default catalog the Adobe created when Lightroom was installed and Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions will contain a copy of the catalog you created on your external HDD.
You are almost done now. Make sure your external drive is still attached for this step. Restart Lightroom using the ALT/OPTION key again. When the Select Catalog screen appears, select the Choose a Different Catalog button (lower left side). When you do, a Finder window will open to allow you to navigate to a catalog of your choosing. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions and select the file Photography Mac Book Pro Version.lrcat. This is the copy you just created. Select the Open button and Lightroom should start. You should see all of your previews and settings just as before. Also, in the left hand panel, all of your folder should show up and none of them should be dimmed and none of your previews should display a small exclamation point badge. Either a dimmed folder name or an exclamation point badge indicates that Lightroom can't find the associated image file. If everything looks good, go to the Lightroom menu, select Preferences and then select the General tab. Under Default Catalog, select an option to either load the LAST catalog opened or select the Users/[user name]/Pictures/Photography Mac Book Pro Versions catalog from the drop down. Shut down Lightroom and then restart it normally. This time, when Lightroom starts, you should be viewing the new copy of your catalog. You can confirm this by looking at the General tab on the Catalog Preferences screen (Lightroom/Catalog Preferences menu items). Shut down Lightroom once again and this time, eject your external drive before restarting. This time, your folders in the left hand panel will be dimmed but you should be able to work with your smart previews. If Lightroom should display a Select Catalog screen with the external drive detached, double check your settings as it indicates Lightroom is still looking at the copy of the catalog on the external drive rather than the new copy you made.
Finally, if you are seeing dimmed folders and/or exclamation point badges with the external drive attached, this indicates a problem. You can select any folder and select Update Folder Location from the context menu. This will allow you to navigate to the copy on the external drive and select it. Lightroom will then update the catalog (select to synchronize the content). This will not only clear the dimmed folder problem but also remove the exclamation point badges for all photos in that missing folder. However, it may indicate that not all went well with the copy of the catalog so make sure to verify all went well. You can use the Get Info option on the two folders. You should see the same number of files/folders for both the copy on the internal drive as well as on the external drive but you can't rely on the byte count because of the possibility of differences between the geometry of the two drives. Hope this all helps!
