How do it import from my camera to an external hard drive?

I am working on a Mac and have a new Nikon D7100. I am fairly new to Lightroom and am using Lightroom 5. I am having problems importing photos from the camera to an external hard drive. I am able to import directly to my internal hard drive but when I try to import to the external one I receive an error stating, "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (44)" and then a list of all the images I am trying to import. I have checked my external drive and there does not seem to be any issues with it. Any experience you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks DJ! I didn't know this could be an issue but I see now my external drive is read only on my Mac.

how to transfer data from macbook pro to an external hard drive, im using (WD 1TB 3.0) ???. I cannot copy anything from my mac to it not a single file.

ok - since you'll be sharing it with a PC - connect it to your windows pc - then format from there - instead of NTFS format - choose exFAT.
or, you can read the link below on how to do it in dos mode.
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/how-can-i-forma t-external-drive-in-exfat-not-in/0f6bf19a-19d6-4470-ae05-53ddf26bb476?msgId=1860 eae3-3488-4eea-8326-f87b89d9851b
once you've formatted it - you can now use it in both your macbook and windows computer.

  • How do I import music but leave it in external hard drive?

I just got my first MacBook air yesterday and am currently trying to move all of my files over etc.
I want to leave my music in an external portable hard drive and not save it to the mac itself. I did this with my last pc and prefer it to be this way (saves space).
I can't find any way to do this?
Can someone please help me? In my ITunes on my PC there seems to be a whole lot more options about importing but there is no bar at the top of iTunes on the Mac to do different things?
    Thank you

  • Importing from Music Stored on an External Hard Drive

I have an external hard drive with a bunch of music on it stored in folders. I want to add all of these folders to my iTunes. A friend of mine who has a Mac and has the exact same external hard drive I have (a Lacie 250GB firewire model), recently upgraded to a laptop and wanted to transfer all the music on the Lacie to the iTunes on the new laptop. He was able to do this by simply going to "File" and then to "Add to Library" and then simply selecting the Lacie drive folder called "Music" in which all his music is stored in folders just like mine. iTunes added everything in that one folder, no matter how many subfolders deep the music was buried. On my Wintel version of iTunes, I only have "Add File to Library" and "Add Folder to Library". This does not go past the first level of subfolders in the tree on this external hard drive, so I have been adding folders one at a time. But I have something like 105 gigs of music on this thing, and there are hundreds of folders. How can I get this done automatically as my lucky friend back east has done? After all, I own all this stuff, why should it be so difficult to add it to my iTunes library?

From the Finder, go into the drive to the folder where you want to create the new folder and select New Folder from the File menu (cmd-shift-N).
From Image Capture, select Other… from the Import To popup menu.
In the File Save dialog, navigate to where you want the new folder, then click "New Folder" button.

So you want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

... I didn't know that Time Machine was more a last resort back up instead of main back up.
Don't rely upon Time Machine to the exclusion of all else. I compliment Time Machine with a periodic "clone". TM is much better than nothing, but it's a safety net, not a hammock
Here is my understanding of Time Machine's file deletion algorithm, distilled from Pondini's FAQ, Apple's KB articles, and my own observations.
Time Machine deletes ("thins") files from the backup disk as follows:
Hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first backup of the day
Daily backups over 30 days old, except the first backup of the week
Older backups get deleted when Time Machine requires space and you deleted them from the source disk.
Therefore, assuming TM has been performing at least one backup per day, backup files will remain available:
at least thirty days, if they existed on your Mac for at least a day
until you run out of space, if they existed on your Mac for at least a week
In addition to the above, Time Machine always keeps one complete copy of your source disk so that the entire volume could be restored if necessary. Any files that remain on your source volume will be present on the TM backup, no matter how old they are.
If you are using 250 GB of space on your source disk, its Time Machine backups are likely to require at least twice that much. A good estimate of the minimum required backup volume size would be about three times the size of your source disk - 1.5 TB in your case.
A more thorough explanation would require Pondini since he has plumbed Time Machine's mysteries far more than I have.

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • How do I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

How can I backup my iPhoto Library to an external hard drive and keep my photos grouped by their events?

I have attempted to make sure my iPhoto library has been backed up on the external hard drive and that it is safe to delete some events from my internal hard drive
You need to think this through.
Time Machine is a back up application. It keeps a rolling back up of the data. It's called rolling because it means you can revert to the data you had on a specific date and time. But that's not eternal, and as time goes by, and your drive fills up, older backups are deleted. So if you delete Events on your Mac they will - eventually - also be deleted from the Time Machine back up.
If you wan tot archive data hendon't use Time Machine for that job. Here's how you might archive an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive. What kind of hard drive do I purchase.  There is not a lot of data to be transferred.

I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive.  What kind of of hard drive must I purchase so that it works with the Tower?  There is not a lot to transfer.

    MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.
