How do keywords work in Bridge CS3

Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat strange problem: I try to add keywords to non-Adobe files as to an Powerpoint file or an Openoffice file. Sometimes it works, sometimes I get an error message that Bridge is unable to save XMP-Data ... How does this XMP-Stuff work? Why do e.g. some Powerpoint files magically have the ability to store XMP data while others do not? Although this is not directly an issue of Bridge, I couldn't find much information about this metadata storage on those files somewhere else. Maybe someone here has an idea how to convince e.g. Powerpoint to save the .ppts in a way that they accept the keywords of Bridge.
Regards,
Rainer Jochem

How the answer to your question is obvious to you, I have no idea, but to work in Excel files, you would need....Excel.

  • Will ACR 5.6 RC work with Bridge CS3

I have gotten the RC to install for Elements  6.0 on OS X.  Bridge CS3 however either displays very fuzzy previews if you use thumbnails generated from 5.5 or if you purge the cache, will not display any thumbnails for .CR2 files created with a 7D or ARW files created with a Sony A100.
Is it supposed to work with Bridge CS3 or are we going to have to upgrade to Elements 8 to have it work with 5.6?

Well, I guess it is a good thing I have already ordered Elements 8 which I think includes Bridge CS4.

  • Please suggest how to preview faster in Bridge CS3

    Hello,
I'm moving from Bridge CS2 to Bridge CS3 but found out that it takes more time to preview pictures eventhough I selected quick thumbnail already. It still takes few seconds more to get pictures in focus.
In Bridge CS2, it seems like the program creates preview pictures for all at the time we open the folder. It takes few mins at start but it can show preview pictures very fast later.
Should I need to change the setting in CS3 for this? If there's no such function, I may need to go back to CS2 as there're tons of pics to view per day.
Thanks so much for your help.

Have never used CS2 so can not compare,
If it is like the later upgade the cache of CS2 and CS3 are not the same.  So the cache will have to be rebuilt.  Once that is done it should be the same speed.  But as I mentioned, do not know how much things changed from 2 to 3.

  • How does metadata work with Bridge and Premiere?

We are trying to figure out how to start using metadata with bridge. But it doesnt seem to work. I can load an avi file into premiere and change the metadata fields for description or scene or log or whatever, when i load it into premiere i see that data, when i look at it in bridge i don't see any of the metadata.
I can go into bridge and edit the metadata for a file. and when i look at it in bridge it is always there. but looking at that same file in premiere there is no metadata there.
we have 8 premiere workstations on a fibrechannel network solution we edit with. we want to have about 5TB of stock video clips available with metadata that every machine can search and use in projects.

I know nothing about Premiere, but perhaps they use different methods to store data.  With Bridge it puts the metadata on the file.  With some programs like PS Elements it puts the metadata in a table.  With PSE one can select "write metadata to file" and solve problem.  Check with Premiere to see how data is stored.
If you are entering keywords a good check is to look with Windows Explorer and see it there are any "tags"  listed after entering it in Premiere.  WE and Bridge read the same.

  • Keyword selection function in Adobe Bridge CS3

    Hello,
Does anybody know if and how I can change the "selection criteria" of keywords in Adobe Bridge CS3?
-> selection criteria: If I want to use the filter with the keywords, it selects the images which include any of the selected keywords (OR-function), but I would like to select only those images which have all of the selected keywords(AND-function).
Example: In a holiday folder named "italy", I want to see all pictures with the keywords "beach" and "me". What I get are all the "beach" images and all the "me" images. How can I change this?
Would be great if someone could help me...!
    Thanks!

In the Find box the Match drop down has 2 options. "If all criteria is met" is like "and" while "if any criteria met" is like "or" logic.

  • How to?  Working images on main computer drive and backup to externals?

    Hi there---
Right now I work in Bridge CS3 and Photoshop and have a workflow and image management system that works for me. But I want to see if I can integrate Lightroom, which I just installed.
I skimmed Martin Evening's book and I am still not sure I can do the following:
Can I keep 3-6 months worth of images on my working computer drive, backing up regularly as I always do, and then erase them on my working computer drive while keeping them on my two backup drives? Or does the Lightroom database not allow you to work that way. My read of Evening is that he works entirely off the external disks. But I don't want to do that. My external disks are just for backups only and I want to keep it that way.
When I would need something from 3-6 months ago, then I'd want to be able to fire up the backup drives and retrieve.
Any suggestions on whether I can do this and how I would do this would be great!
    Thanks, Paul

Thanks! Is there a "how to" posted somewhere about this?? I need workflow suggestions and I'm coming up blank.
Currently, I put a new yyyy-mm-dd-nameofshoot folder for every shoot which contains a folder with the original RAW files. I delete the bad ones in bridge. And develop the ones I want to level 10 jpgs in photoshop. I put those in a JPG folder. Sometimes I put other things in the same folder that I want to keep in there... like client invoices, retouched photos, uprezzed images, web galleries. I try to keep everything together under 1 folder and manage everything through my Mac OS interface... not through software.
My backup routine consists of backing up weekly to two external drives using Prosoft's Data Backup 3. I do a simple copy, not a sync or clone, which only copies new or modified files. If the files get deleted off my computer disk, they get kept on the backup. In this way, I clean my computer disk periodically and retain my backup.
I'm so happy with my backup system and kind of want to retain it, but also use LR. I'm worried that the database will screw up my system of working. But I'm attracted to the easy metadata entry and image search capabilities.
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

  • Bridge cs3 unresponsive

Last week my Photoshop CS3 stopped working because "licensing for this product has stopped working". After talking to the guys of technical department that problem seems to be solved. Now I have a new issue: Bridge CS3 is unresponsive. I can't see my pictures through Bridge. The answer of the technical department: they can't help me since "my problem" is not related to Photoshop CS3 and is not an installation issue. They referred me to this forum. So, my question is, how do I get my Bridge CS3 back to work? The photos are still there since I can open them in Lightroom, so what is the problem?
    Thanks for any help,
    Not technical savvy at all....

So, my question is, how do I get my Bridge CS3 back to work? The photos are
still there since I can open them in Lightroom, so what is the problem?
First of all the CS3 version for Bridge is pretty worse to put it mildly,
you are 2 versions behind and both CS4 and CS5 version of Bridge are far
    better, more stable and faster.
However if you don't want to upgrade it should be possible to get it back to
    work.
First try the obvious route using the menu tools, cache, purge cache for
folder and see if Bridge goes back to work again.
If not restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences.
Try again and maybe also try the purge cache using the tools menu.
If no luck there is an other method but a little more effort needed for this
so first try the above options.

  • Tags / Keywords PSE6 -- Bridge CS3 how???

    Hello,
sorry to cause inconvenience to you but i can´t find an answer to my question here in the forum.
I read a lot of similar threads, but no one answerd my problem BridgeCS3 <-> PSE6.
    What i have:
    Bridge CS3 / Photoshop CS3 / Photoshop Elements 6.0
    What i want to do:
At this time i organize all my photos with the Organizer of PSE6 and put keywords
with the Tags-function from PSE6 to my photos.
Now i want to change to the bridge to organize my photos.
    What i need:
Now i need a functionality to import all my keywords/tags from PSE6 into the bridge.
What i have done until now:
In PSE6-Organizer i export all my keywords to a file. The automatic generated file
from PSE6 is named: stichwort.xml . I can´t change the format or name in PSE6 to write the Tags
    to a file.
In the bridge i tried to import the "stichwort.xml"-File, but that doesnt work.. There are no structures
and useable Keywords coming into the bridge.
So... is it general possible to import the Tags/Structure form PSE6 into the BridgeCS3 ??
And when... what´s my fault? Can you give me a hint?
    Thanks for help.
    Bye

There was a post some time ago that I will try to recall - hopefully not too inaccurately. I have never used PSE so don't really know what you are trying to do.
The way I remember it PSE uses some sort of a table for the keywords. Bridge does not, but embeds the information as metadata to each file. Apparently this is more of a standardized format for the data and can be used by other applications.
For a clearer explanation on how the information is handled go to Bridge Help and type in metadata. It does say something about ability to export metadata so maybe that would work for you.
Before you go to all that effort you might investigate how PSE Organizer may handle the data in the future. Can never tell - the next upgrade may change that feature also. Perhaps PSE forum?

  • Lost Bridge CS3 keywords after upgrade to Leopard

So I have have spent many, many man hours assigning keywords to images in Bridge CS3. I then recently upgraded the computer from OSX Tiger to Leopard (not Snow Leopard).
I use Filters to get at the exact images that I am interested in previewing. The first indication that something is wrong is there is far too few hits for the filter I am executing. So I go into the whole image gallery and notice that the images that should have keywords no longer have them.
Also, attempting to add keywords now fails. I assign one, go to another image, come back and no keyword assignment, gone.
During the OS upgrade I saved all support files, including preferences. Those are there including some keywords from before but not all.
Does anyone know how I can recover the other keyowords and how I can get the new ones to stick?
Thanks so much, I am really shut down until I figure this out. My image Library is somewhere north of 35,000 images.

This happened to me too. I spent hours keywording my images, and now almost all of them are gone! Oddly enough some pictures still have keywords left on them, but most does not. I can still find images with keywords through spotlight, but Bridge seems to not notice that they are there.
Is there a way to manually make Bridge aware that these images does in fact have keywords?
Edit: I forgot to say that I just upgraded to Snow Leopard.

  • How do I get Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3 to show and open camerea RAW files?

I am not able to see or open Raw files from my Canon 40D in either Photoshop CS3 or Bridge CS3. At first I was able to open RAWS in Photoshop and then I followed directions on the internet at how to manually replace a Camera Raw Plugin so I could open it in Bridge and now neither of the apps work with RAW. In photoshop It says that the file is not supported.
I looked up what plug in I needed and it said 4.2 for a Canon 40 D. I also followed the instructions in the read me file that was with the plugin download. No results from it. I even tried to switch it back to the old plug in to see if I could atleast get back the capiblility of opening it in Photoshop even though bridge was not working...still can't open it in either. What am I missing?

You should install Camera Raw 4.6.
Visit this page and follow the instructions carefully:

  • Bridge CS3- My find command has quit working, any help?

In my Bridge CS3 the find command cannot find any of the keywords that I spent hours adding. It has been working fine, but one day stopped. I have deleted the plist, the cache, and the recent workspace to no effect. I have not added any new software recently. It doesn't work if I am searching a file that I have open in Bridge so it is not a matter of not waiting long enough for the thumbnails to generate. Those were the only suggestions I found anywhere. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I am running this on a Mac if that makes a difference.

I may have to upgrade as you suggest. I did find one thing that is interesting, though it doesn't explain where the problem comes from. If I open a folder in Bridge that holds files that I have added keyword to, when I close it Bridge can find those files with the find command. I am not sure why opening the folders would make a difference, but it seems to. This only works one when searching one sub-folder deep. If there is another folder in that, even though I've opened it, it will not find it.
I guess until I am ready to spend the money to upgrade I will spend an evening opening all my keyworded folders. I better find a good video to watch while doing it!

  • Bridge CS3 keyword panel search window missing

I am running Bridge CS3 (version 2.0.0.975) on a WinXP desktop and a Win7 laptop. The search window on the keyword panel has disappeared on the laptop, but not on the desktop. I've looked through the Bridge preferences and don't see a setting that would control this, and I haven't found any context menu that would allow me to customize the panel. Can anyone tell me how to get the keyword search window back on my laptop?
    Thank you,
    Terry

Im geting the same... I tried refreshing cache etc... but no avail...

  • How do I get CS5 Bridge to open instead of CS3?

When I upgraded Photoshop to CS5 I had to do it by upgrading my CS2 version because my CS3 version was part of the creative suite package.  When I open Bridge, I don't get the CS5 version, I get the CS3 version and the two are definitely different.  I like the Output features in the CS5 version since I use it at work, but at home, I don't know how to get the CS5 Bridge to open and, of course, Bridge doesn't show up as a stand alone program in the Program listings.  What to do?  Should I try reinstalling CS5?

Hi there! Because the forum you originally posted in is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop, I moved your question to the Bridge General Discussion forum, where you'll get more specialized help.

  • How to embed my name within multiple image's EXIF data at once-Bridge CS3

I've been trying to figure out how to do this for some time and just can't understand how to get my images both Raw and JPEGs to show my name in the EXIF copyright or author entry when entering it in the "File Info" dialog box so it shows up viewing EXIF data using EXIF Viewer or within Bridge CS3.
Can I get some help on this? Point me to a tutorial or something?
I've already read Bridge Help and it's worded in such a way that isn't very clear to me on how to do this.
Thank you for your help on this.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. That "Digital Workflow 1" pdf told me to uncheck all IPTC boxes which is opposite what you just said.
You are free to create the workflow that suits you, check or uncheck IPTC in Bridge prefs is only a way to organize the view in the metadata panel, not adding or deleting info from it.
So I'm suppose to enter my name in the IPTC Contact-"Creator" entry section within the "File Info" dialog box of a selected image/images within Bridge CS3 and check the IPTC boxes in the Metadata section of Bridge's Preferences dialog box to turn them on so my name I entered as "Creator" in "File Info"/IPTC can be seen in the Metadata placard Bridge work space interface but does NOT guarantee my name will be EMBEDED IN THE EXIF of the selected image/images?
As above, all info you add to IPTC and apply to an image is embedded in the exif and xmp data of that file, no matter if the boxes are checked or unchecked for visibility in metadata panel.
IOW checking the IPTC boxes in Bridge's Metadata Preferences is just for previewing within Metadata Placard work space interface in Bridge? I'm using Filmstrip view as a Bridge work space BTW.
Yes. And consider an other workspace for metadata, I attach some screenshots from my workspace I crerated myself in Bridge using the prefs and drag and drop with panels. It is from Bridge CS4 and apart from the top pathbar it is basicly the same as CS3.
Filmstrip is very nice for sorting with big preview but not the best for adding metadata. You can create as many workspace as you like and you can easily switch between them (in CS3 use the number buttons bottom right.
To actually embed my name entered as "Creator" in "File Info" IPTC section in a selected image/image's EXIF data I have to apply a custom made template to the image/images already residing on the hard drive and viewed in Bridge OR append the IPTC data within the EXIF of the image/images upon import from camera CF card reader through Bridge's "Get Photos From Camera" drop down menu. Correct?
Yes, I have choosen for the last option because now all my downloaded files have this template in it and I don't have to bother later. No matter if the files are keepers or not. You only have to create a template once. See also a screenshot from the info I filled to the template but it is up to you what you like to appear in there.
Another question, what is the difference between the "Description" section where you can enter "Author" (which would be my name) and the IPTC Contact section where you can enter "Creator" (again, my name) both within "File Info" dialog box?
check this wikipedia info about IPTC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Press_Telecommunications_Council
Another question, I just selected a batch of images within a folder in Bridge and tried to create a Metadata Template and it shows a blank box with a statement at the bottom "Only checked properties will be added/changed to this template"...and below this "Properties selected: 0". What and where are checked properties? Does that mean I have to check the IPTC boxes in Bridge's Metadata Preferences?
Don't know that. You should first create a template without selecting multiple files. After you saved this template select the files you want to change and click on the append template option.
I have to wonder how and why another photographer would need all this nested clutter to accommodate alternate workflows on something as simple as input/output processing on a batch of images. It's beyond my understanding. This just seems way too complicated to have to sort out. Just my opinion.
Nothing is ever that simple as it seems....
