How do LR identify a picture?

There are many discussions on whether to keep metadata in LR only or both LR and in the images/sidecar. Pros and cons of both solutions. Many pros and cons. Anyway, that's not the topic here, but if we are to keep the data inside LR only, how sure can we be that the connection between an image in the database and the image on disk are kept? I mean - if an image changes name or changes location, how good will LR be in finding it again?
Or to rephrase the question - what is the logic behing how LR identifies a picture. I guess it's not path and filename only.

> I don't get this system at all. The file name tells you nothing you need to know but the date, and that's already in the EXIF info; you already know your name. The camera generated file name is particularly useless to me; I see its use only where one backup before renaming files.
> My file names tell me a bit about the subject, and are generally numbered under 1000. Everything else and more is in the file's metadata.
You're right that the file name doesn't tell you much, but then it doesn't need to! The only purpose of the file name in this system is to be uniquely identifiable. The *real* information is stored in the meta data where it should be. In this system, renaming files to be unique should take no effort or thought; it should simply be a case of running a script and backing up the files as soon as possible to limit the chances of data loss.
Having the initials in the file name can be useful if you have photographs from different photographers on your system. It is also useful if you send your photographs to companies or agencies - it can help to quickly identify who the photograph is from (albeit that information is in the meta data anyway).
The system certainly isn't for everyone and I'm not suggesting you should change yours. This naming system serves its purpose extremely well for me and for many others. Removing the burden of information from the file names and directory names and placing it in the meta data is a wonderful concept in my mind. It facilitates an organised and easy to maintain (and backup) file structure for your precious/valuable digital photographs.

  • How do I identify and fix images Elements 10 believes are corrupt?

During the past three days I have had problems with the functionality of my Photoshop Elements 10 and  received several messages indicating that the catalog is corrupt.  How do I identify and fix images Elements 10 believes are corrupt?

Thank you for the prompt reply unfortunately the fix did not work.
Let me provide some more information that may help you diagnose this problem.
I run Elements on a PC. The operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. The System Type is x64-based. The processor is AMD A8-3850 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 2900 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s).  The Hard Drive is 1.81 TB, and 1.5 TB of this is free.  The Ram is 16 GB.  Everything else works great.
I have used Photoshop Elements for about 10 years, during which time I have upgraded to newer versions 5 or 6 times. I have used Elements 10 during the past 2 years.  I already bought Elements 12 but I am trying to repair this issue before I upgrade to it. I have approximately 65,000 photos in my catalog. All but the last 2,000 are backed up.
During the past few days I encountered several problems with the functionality of my Elements 10; all errors provide messages indicating that the catalog is corrupt. Forexample, when I edit a photo in my catalog, the thumbnail image of the newly edited versionwill not display.  When I imported new photos, the thumbnail image would not display.  In all cases the photo image was replaced by a ?.
I tried to correct the thumbnail problem by repairing and optimizing the catalog. In either case I received the same message that the catalog had not been repaired/optimized because some images were corrupt. However, despite this message, the thumbnails for the newly imported photos appeared but the thumbnails for the recently edited photos still have not.
Currently, I cannot import new images, edit, delete or even stack photos.  I can still view, search for, copy and delete photos.  When I try to import a photo a new photo I get the following messages - ”the requested change could not be completed because the current catalog is corrupt.  You can attempt a repair in the file catalog dialog."  - "Nothing was imported.  The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types or the files are already in this Catalog." and "The catalog could not be repaired, if you have a recent catalog backup, you should restore it."
I have visually inspected the catalog and found about 25 recently imported photos that have a thumbnail image but lack the photo's id (i.e. img_3075.jpg would be replaced with ?). They are my photos from my camera and no different that the other 300 images I imported at the same time. However, these images in the catalog are blurry.  When I check the image in the My Pictures folder the image is fine and properly located between img_3074.jpg and img_3076.jpg.  I attempted to reconnect but received a message that there are no files to reconnect. I cannot delete the images from the catalog and If I delete them at the source (in the file folder) they still remain in the catalog view.
Howdo I identify and fix images that Elements believes are corrupt?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

  • How do i identify all RAW photos in my Mac and have them removed - taking too much space.

I have a Macbook Air and I keep getting message that I'm out of space. i have emptied the trash but no difference. I believe it is the photos - I have impoted quite a bit of RAW photo files - how do i identify them and then delete them. I dont want to have 2 formats of the same photos.

The process is simple - but tedious.
Select the photos and export them, saving them as Jpegs.
Trash the Library. Make a new one. Import the Jpegs.
    Alternatively: move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're intent on trashing the Raws, you have a couple of bigger questions to consider: why are you shooting raw if you're going to trash them? Why are you using iPhoto, which is designed for a non-destructive workflow, if you want a destrucutve one?

  • IPad 2 sync error (-50) : how do I identify bad image(s)?

I have a recurring error when I try to sync my iPad 2: I get "The iPad cannot by synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)."
    I've searched the forums and:
    1. Removed the photo cache (didn't help but now only photos on iPad are the Camera Roll)
    2. Restored from backup (still get an error, although the (number) might be different)
    3. Reset the iPad to new and restored from backup (failed again, only now no 3rd party apps or photos except Camera Roll)
    4. Reset the iPad and synced it as a new device (still get the error, only now of course even the Camera Roll is empty)
So what I've done now is reset the iPad and set it to only sync photos. No music, movies, contacts, calendars, apps, etc. Just photos.
I get the (-50) error trying to sync. So it is obvious that I have one or more corrupted images in my iPhoto library.
Assuming removing the bad photo(s) will solve the problem, how do I identify which one(s) it is?
    Thanks.
    (Mac OS 10.6.8, iTunes 10.4.1, iPhoto 8.1.2, iOS 4.3.5)

I'm just posting a quick resolution in case anyone else comes here. What worked for me was to delete the iPod Photo Cache (right-click on your iPhoto Library, usually found in your Pictures directory, and select Show Package Contents, then delete the whole iPod Photo Cache folder) AND to sync the iPad as a new device. I have 25,000 photos and rebuilding the iPod Photo Cache took about 5 hours. That was before syncing.
Because I'm starting effectively with a wiped, fresh iPad, getting all the apps, books, music, etc. back to where I was before this all started will probably take me a few days to a week.
I would have much rather been able to identify and rebuild the corrupted cache image(s) and kept my iPad as it was. This whole rigamarole represents many hours, if not days, of my time that I'll never get back.
If you're in the same position, I'd try pretty much everything else before doing this, you'll save time if you solve the problem another way. But this way will get it done.

  • How do I get the pictures from my iPhoto on my external Hard Drive to show up in the already existing iPhoto on my MacBook?

I have an early 2008 MacBook. I had been using iPhoto on this MacBook until I purchased an iMac in 2011, at which time I copied my iPhoto Library from my MacBook to my iMac. Then I realized that my pictures and music were consuming the memory on my iMac, so I moved iPhoto and my iTunes LIbrary to an external Hard Drive. Now I am in a situation where I do not have access to my iMac, but will need to use my MacBook as my main computer for the next year. So, I have my iPhoto on an external hard drive and I plug it into my MacBook and see the iPhoto Library folder, but when I click on it, it opens up the old iPhoto that is still existing on my MacBook and will not show any of the new pictures?! At first I thought it wasn't able to show up anything because my MacBook was running two operating systems behind what my iMac was when I was running my iPhoto Library from that computer. So, I upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and upgraded the existing iPhoto on my MacBook to iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. However whenever I plug in the external hard drive and click on the iPhoto Library folder to open it up, it is still just opening up the already existing iPhoto on the MacBook (with my older pictures) rather than the iPhoto on the hard drive (with my newer pictures). How can I access my pictures that are on my external hard drive?

Thank you for your advice. I followed your directions, but came up with the same results. However, I did discover that whenever I open up the iPhoto Library that is already existing on my MacBook a certain set of pictures shows up. But then when I open up the iPhoto Library from the Hard drive another set of pictures shows up. BUT not ALL of my pictures are showing up on the iPhoto Library from the hard drive. At least the last two years of pictures are not showing up?! Actually, it appears that all the pictures are there from when I started using iPhoto about 5 years ago up until around the time that I got my iMac desktop computer and started using that (2 years ago). I have noticed that more recent videos I have made are showing up in a folder on the hard drive, but will not appear when I open up iMovie?! Any ideas on how to access my pictures from the last 2 years off of the hard drive???

If you want just the originals, then you can go into the Aperture library (right click on it and do "show package contents"). Inside is a directory called "Masters" and you can find the original files in a bunch of subfolders.
But... you'll lose all adjustments, keywords, and other information, and just have the files as they were imported originally from the cameras.
Easiest is probably to buy Aperture and update everything, and then migrate to the Photos application down the road if that's what you want. Aperture 3.0 came out in 2010 (five years ago!) so it's not like you've upgraded in a while

  • How do I delay a picture change in Keynote beyond the 60seconds the build process allows from one graphic to another on the same slide?

How do I delay a picture change in Keynote beyond the 60 seconds allowed in the 'build' it procedure on the same slide?

    BazzyS wrote:
I'm referring to a graphic change within the same slide not transition between slides.
In the suggestion I gave, using a transition instead of a build, has exactly the same visual effect as a build, it just uses a different tool.
in my example earlier, I have 7 coloured objects, the first 6 objects appear using a dissolve build.
The 8th object appears with the same effect, a dissolve, but is delayed by 5 minutes because it uses a dissolve transition.
I used a transition instead of a build which uses 2 slides to achieve the effect, the viewers will not care how many slides there are and what tool is used, its the end result that matters.
first 7 objects appear in a build
a transition set up using a disolve and a delay of 10 minutes
7th object appears with a disolve

You should have an program called Photo Booth in your Applications folder. Launch it, turn the MacBook towards what you want to take a picture of (using the screen as a viewfinder) and click on the camera button (or press command - T on your keyboard)  to take the picture.
    Best of luck.

How can I view my pictures that were backed up to iTunes? I no longer have an apple product but need to view the pictures for very important reasons.

If you mean backed up as part of an iPhone backup in iTunes?  If so, you would have to use 3rd party software to extract them from the backup, such as iPhone Backup Extractor.

  • How do I sync multiple picture folders to my iPod ?

How do I sync multiple picture folders to my iPod touch ? I don't want to create another folder and then copy the desired folders to be synced, into this main folder. All of my pictures are about the size of 5-10 MB. Copying them would mean loss of additional space.

You can only point iTunes at one folder for syncing to the iPod. You can however selectively choose which subfolders of the main folder are included. I use a Photos folder inside iTunes\iTunes Media and move the folders that I want on my device into that, but the parent folder could be anywhere that suits you.
