How do Mac mini users like the parallel program?

I have been a PC user since the 8088 chip and I am done!
For now, the transition to APPLE is pretty scarry.
I have 2 routes. Create a windows partition ro do the parallels snapshot of my windows system.
How well does this snap shot solution work for most folks?
Are there better solutions?

I am going to need both at some point a LT and desktop.
As a above, I need  a laptop for the studio to shoot tethered and a mini (2.7 i7, 8-16gb RAM, 500gbHD to use on my office for editing, is because I have many peripherals, especially my NEC monitor that has a lot of life left...I am just SICK SICK SICK of Windows issues and Apple owners knowing something I don't. LOL!!!!
On higher end ADOBE products, the programs call home and if something is amiss, the programs will DEACTIVATE all on their own, You don't have a chance to be dishonest. LOL
SO, as above, I can't BUY 2 apple products: a Mac mini and a MBP to have the upgrades all on MACs, THUS the reason for this post about being able to run windows to run these programs until I can buy my 2nd MAC product ( a laptop).
Yeah, I know about activation -- I have CS5.5. License should still allow one laptop, one desktop (or even just two computers) as long as they're not used simultaneously. But I understand your problem, you can't yet buy both the MBP and Mini now; you want both a laptop and desktop, so you can't crossgrade now.
Is there anything that stops you from "lugging" a laptop from studio to office? You can always set up hubs with the peripherals attached, so you can quickly hook up the laptop. I haul my MBP to work everyday, where it connects to an wide-gamut monitor and a FW/USB hub that in turn is hooked up to HDs, graphics tablet, card readers, etc. I connect wireless to the network, which saves me one cable.
Speaking of peripherals, since you're thinking of switching, make sure there are Mac drivers, etc. for them. You may still need virtualization software anyway if you can't get Mac drivers.
As BDAqua mentioned, if you go the virtualization route you're still running Windows; so protection is needed.
Have you considered instead of the 2.7 i7 Mini, the Mini Server instead? The mini server while clocked slower at 2.0GHz has a quad-core i7, and a 2d HD standard. Sticking the Virtual machine one the 2d HD (and more BTO options on dual drives), while giving it more cores will improve improve performance. (But you can always try sticking your Virtual Machine on an external HD for improved performance.) While it comes with Lion Server; Server is some added apps on top of client that you can turn off and throw away.
The 2.7Ghz i7 you're looking at is dual-core. Getting dual drives on that is more costly when you BTO -- you have one choice. While some have added a 2d HD themselves, Apple doesn't consider it a user serviceable, so adding a 2d HD yourself most likely will violate the warranty.
In favor of the Mini you're looking is the AMD dedicated GPU, while the Mini Server has the Intel integrated GPU. It's a bit of a conundrum. Were there an option for the Mini Server with the AMD, I would have paid for it.

How many Mac Mini's sold? and what has been the most popular Mac? Curious, Bill

If you visit Apple's PR Library, you can find the quarterly sales results posted. Each one has a PDF you can download that includes a summary of Macs sold. The most recent one, from April 19, 2006, includes a PDF ("Data Summary" at the top of the press release) that only breaks down the Macs sold into "desktop" and "portable" computers. There's no way to distinguish between iMacs, G5 towers, Xserves and Mac minis in the desktop category. Older press releases like that (for example, the April, 2005 release) break down the desktops into iMacs and PowerMacs, but the iMac group includes the Mac minis and eMacs so it's still not possible to figure out exactly how many Mac minis were sold.
So, unless Apple releases the numbers separately, I'm not sure it's possible to answer your question.

  • How to configure the mac mini to allow the clients to access both partitions...the client will only see the one we are logged into at the server???

if possible??? how do we configure the mac mini to allow the clients to access both partitions...the client will only see the one we are logged into at the server???

You have to explicitly share directories on external/secondary volumes.
Use the Server admin app to configure file sharing, and select which directory/directories on the second drive you want to share, then they'll be available to clients.

  • How Do I Wrap Text Like the iOS Camera App?

Hello. I am in yearbook, and I have been challenged with designing the cover of the yearbook, and I have been having a few problems along the way. One of these problems is to wrap text. Specifically, I'm stuck on how I would wrap text like the iOS camera app on the bottom of the screen. The words seem like they are wrap around a 3D object to give it that effect, but I can't really tell. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

No iOS apps are use to work on images  they have no value when you have Photoshop. The iPod is better for displaying image then the iPad mini it has a 3:2 aspect ratio display and travels better the the mini iPad which has a 4:3 aspect ratio display.  I also crop image for display on wall mounted HDTV. The iPad is better for casual internet access then the iPod. All our kids have iPhones and they all use computers either Mac or PC for work and internet access.  When you have a Unix or Windows why would you want to touch an iOS device for work or serious internet access.  Apple mobile devices are convenient for casual use and grand kids don't get that dirty finger painting on them as they do using real paint. Nothing of real value is maintained on an iOS device.
Well...there's Photoshop Touch and Photoshop Mix as well as Lightroom Mobile. It could be argued that they're don't exactly mirror their desktop cousins, yes, but they weren't meant to be. They were meant as extensions to the desktop experience.  (e.g., Lightroom Mobile lets one work with the RAW images they have in their Lightroom desktop collections.)
The more powerful Windows tablets can run Photoshop desktop (like Photoshop CC) too.
@bluebocat: Are you looking for text with a perspective? Like it has a vanishing point? As if it was turned in a certain direction in 3D space?

Mac mini user and I would like to learn how to turn off this machine talking to me. It has suddenly started to speak everything that I type and roll over. I would like to learn how to turn this off. I have no idea how it got turned on. I guess that's why my 17 month old shouldn't play on the computer. Please help it is so annoying.

    Hi frog8-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
That annoying voice-over can actually be useful for folks that are hearing impaired.
You can turn off this feature via ->System preferences ->Universal Access ->VoiceOver and check "no".
Command-function-f5 will also toggle the function and is most likely the way the lil' one enabled same.

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

  • How Can Mac Mini drive USB External Soundblaster 5.1 box

I'm replacing my old Dell PC with a Mac Mini.  I'd like to use the 5.1 speakers the Dell drove with an Audigy soundblaster 5.1 card.  So... I'm trying to find out if the USB External 5.1 Soundblaster box would allow the mac mini to drive those speakers.  Creative Labs (soundblaster mfr) drivers for the soundblaster do not support macs.  So, are there OSx SW drivers from some other source for the USB soundblaster?  Or, would I have to run Windows 7 on the Mac mini via  VMware or Parallels, or lastly, only via BootCamp?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Soundblaster will work in Windows throught Bootcamp. Via VMware or Parallels is unsure.

  • How does Mac Mini compare to iMac?

My iMac needs to be replaced. Do users like the Mac mini as well as other Mac computers? Is it as troublefree? Easy to use?

I don't have an iMac, so take everything I say with a gain of salt...
However, I do have a mac mini. Obviously, the iMac will be faster, have a nice LCD, whereas the mac mini is going to be slower because it uses an out of date G4 CPU. Also, the hard drive is (I believe) slower, and it's a lot harder from what i've heard to upgrade ram. that's not to say it can't be done, I've voided my mac mini's warranty 2 times now, the first time upgrading the ram, the 2nd time in a daunting hard drive upgrade.
If you don't plan on upgrading the computer anytime soon though, there's nothing wrong with it. I use mine for some video editing and photoshopping, but mostly it's just left on 24/7 as a file server and every now and then used for AIM and word.
When you get it, and take it out of the box, you need to plug in a power cable, mouse, keyboard, (probably buy a USB hub) speakers if you have any, and a monitor.
All in all, it's a full working macintosh computer, minus some nice extras (such as more than 2 USB ports), but it works just like any othe mac, uses finder like the iMac, and quite honestly, if you have a spare LCD, I think it's a better buy if you are only going to be doing word processing/email on it.
Once you start upgrading the DVD/CD+RW to a dvdrw, and boosting the ram to get most speed and such, I would forget about getting it though, since it's innatley slower than the iMac (but CPU, GPU, RAM, and HDD wise), and you'd be better off spending the money on the iMac.
In short, if you only use your mac for email and office documents, it's the best bang for your buck ever. If you need your mac for other stuff (such as video editing) you might be better off going with an iMac. There is, however, nothing wrong with the mini at all that stops it from being a fully functional mac.
P.S. I'd wait until after the next macworld expo thing in january to buy, as they are rumored to be releasing new products, which would drop the prices of the current lineup.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

I plan to purchase a Mac mini and then a new iPad.  Can I use the iPad as a keyboard and screen for the Mac mini, using either the USB connector or Wi-Fi?

I'm sorry, I should have said thru Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi.  I want to use the mini as a base station and the iPad like a laptop that I can sync when I'm home and carry with me when I travel.  Is is possible to hook these 2 up - iPad/mini, through Bluetooth?  I understand I need to use a regular monitor/keyboard/mouse on the initial install.

  • Mac Mini Upgrade on the horizon?

I am considering the purchase of a Mac-Mini to use as an HTPC device, but I wanted to know if anyone knew how long the current'top-of-the-line' Mac-Mini has been available to the public, and/or if anyone has gotten wind up an upgraded model that may be released sometime soon?
I know it's not possible to keep pace with the latest/greatest hardware that's available, and I am also aware of Apple's secrecy regarding any new hardware releases...but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask, as perhaps someone might be able to +(for example)+ tell me that it's been six months since the initial release of the current 'top-of-the-line' Mac-Mini, and in the past Apple has released new Mac-Mini models every 6-8 months or so...
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

It really isn't possible to give you an credible idea of when (or if) apple will update or replace the current minis. Policy is not to reveal such plans in advance, and thus anyone who does know will be under a non-disclosure agreement and be unable to repeat what they know.
It's also against the terms of use here to discuss such things, but one can make a reasoned assumption that since the current chipset in the mini is being phased out my Intel, the mini will have to be replaced or updated at some point to accommodate the newer CPU - this was what happened with the iMac recently, along with relatively small speed bumps. The mini, however, as the entry level system really serves a different sort of market, so Apple have not so far seen the need to update it regularly, nor with particularly significant improvements.
As such, I wouldn't be inclined to expect anything major in terms of what will happen to the mini. The last update was around August last year, so one might argue that Apple are due to release another. Typically though that hasn't been the way the mini has gone so far. It is reasonable to think it will be updated or replaced at some point, but the only reliable way to approach this is to work on the basis of what is available now. For media center use, the original mini, G4 processor and all, was quite sufficient for many, so it's not as if this sort of use has particularly heavy hardware demands. There are some thiongs one might expect in a media center device (Blu-Ray player for example) that it can be certain will not be in the next generation of mini (such would appear in other models higher up the range first, and there's no sign of them yet), but short of that, the mini is pretty credible as it is.
Another thing to consider is that with the AppleTV device on the market, Apple are not likely to push the mini toward media center use, thus whatever they plan seems likely to be aimed at more traditional computing in order not to seriously cannibalize AppleTV sales.
My advice would be that if you don't need to buy a system at this point, or find the current models insufficient, then wait. That way you get to see what may (or may not be) on the horizon before making a purchase. If you need something now, then unless you have distinct needs outside the mainstream, a current mini is likely to be very effective. Certainly a minor speed bump and slightly faster processor isn't likely to help much, even if that's what Apple deliver.
