How do pre-orders work?

There is one locked thread on this subject, but I'm going to ask the question anyway because I'm still not sure I understand: I thought a pre-order of Springsteen would give me an automatic download to my song libary so that it would be there when I woke up Tuesday morning. That didn't happen. Now I gather I was supposed to receive an email (which I would never know about because the only email address that I Tunes has for me is my dummy AOL address which I never check). So suppose I had received this email? What happens next? Do I click on on an email attachment and something happens?
Why would anyone do a pre-order anyway? Do you get bonus video stuff that is not available after October 2?
Since I ended up doing a normal manual download of the album, will I get double charged or will I tunes figure out what happened and not charge me for the pre-order?

That should explain some stuff. As for why you'd preorder? Sometimes bonuses are included that aren't available otherwise.
Also, you are not charged for the preorder until you download it.

You keep using the word insurance. Do you pay extra for insurance from Asurian or is your iPhone being replaced under the manufacturer warranty ? This second option is not insurance so you would have to contact Asurian directly. With this insurance there is a paid premium each month on your cell invoice, you have to pay a deductible to get your replacement device which can run up to $200
Verizon cannot assist you at the store under insurance, only manufacturers warranty and they can give you the phone number and web site address to start your claim process.
In the future get your iPhone insurance through Apple Care, its only $99 for the two years and you just walk into the Apple Store near you and get service.

How does pre-ordering with Apple work?

For people who have previously pre-ordered with Apple (for an iPad or iPhone) or are familiar with their pre-order process, would you mind explaining the process to me?
In other words, will their website lag due to an overload of orders? Will everyone be guaranteed an iPhone 4 on the 15th? Is there limited availability? Will they be depleted out of iPhones if I order an hour after?
I don't care when I get it, but will I be guaranteed one on the pre-order date?

What has happened in the past is the pre-order date is when you can place an order for the phone. You will not receive it until at least the 24th (available date). If you want to be one of the first on your block to get one, I'd recommend ordering as early as possible. You will be told the prospective "receive by" date when you order. Historically, those that order early, receive them on the available date. Of course you can also camp out at your local Apple Store (as has become an Apple tradition).
It is possible there might be a lag during the initial rush, but I doubt it. Apple has figured out how to take orders fairly efficiently

Placed order @ 2:55 am. I received confirmation email @ 2:24 that say deliver on the 21st. Ordered black 32 GB. Card has not been charged yet, hope that happens tomorrow.

Amazon will use a freight forwarder. Apple will not. If they shipped your order, then they didn't recognize your "carrier" as being a forwarder.
This is an issue you will need to take up with your forwarder. It's quite possible the shipment will be returned to Apple, but again it's something you will need to solve with Continental.

I pre-ordered a book from I books. Thought the book was supp to be downloaded when it became avail? Is this not how a pre order works? Any help would be great

Yeah, that was my point. If it downloaded to his I tunes, the pad wouldn't have it, and apple thinks they already sent it. If that is what happens, all he needs to do is sync. But I wonder if it downloaded yet at all.
I preordered a book some time ago, and do not remember if the download was automatic. I do remember thinking it was over due, and then poof, it was there. You may have to visit the store to trigger the download.

To buy/preorder an iPhone one needs to have a valid address and credit card issued in that country.
For UK http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone5
Currently dispatch is 2-3 weeks.
If you do not live in UK or do not have an address and British credit card however, want an iPhone from this country, you have to ask your friend to buy it for you using his/her credit card and address.

HT201272 I pre-ordered an album, but only 2 of the songs from that album are showing up to download. What do I need to do to get the rest of the album that I already bought?

Not sure what is going on here. I pre-ordered an album. One of the songs was available for instant download so I have that in my library now. I received an email saying that the rest of the album is available for download. When I go into my purchased songs as instructed, it only shows 2 other songs from that album. Not sure what I need to do.

I preordered Mockingjay part 1 and it will not let me have it ,it says I don't have enough money it's paied for I want my movie

Wii U pre order guaranteed?

I managed to pre order the Deluxe Wii u package at my local best buy. Does this mean that I am GUARANTEED a Deluxe Wii U package? Or is it possible that they get sold out and I don't get it even if I pre ordered?

How can a pre-order not be guaranteed? When it comes to a new video game system that is releasing, retail stores such as best buy make sure that they have an excess amount of units than preordered. This is so the people that didn't have a chance to preorder can wait in line and have a shot at still getting the system. So BB "ordered enough to cover pre-orders?"

It has been repeated ad nauseum on this board that BB "ordered enough iPhones to cover pre-orders" but were at the mercy of how many Apple actually sent them. I would really like to meet the psychics that BB employs. That order from Apple had to have been placed well before the pre-orders even started. So how did BB know how many pre-orders they were going to have?

It is quite simple really.
1, BB and Apple should have had a pre-arranged and agreed upon launch day stock allotment quantity.
2, Based on that quantity allotment, BB Corporate would advise quantity distrbution to individual stores, based on the store's overall sales performance.
3, Thereby, the stores themselves should have known from the beginning how many they were supposed to receive, if Apple delivers the pre-arranged allotment.
4, This store allotment quantity is confidential and cannot be disclosed to public per BB policy. This is their practice and cannot be called into question.
To recap, each store should know from the get go how many they expect to receive. Assuming they receive the expected quantity, they should also be able to inform their customers the likelihood of pre-orders being fulfilled.
All BB can do is assume that Apple will fulfill their delivery promise. What is upsetting everyone is that not only do we not know what each store is going to get, we do not even know what each store is allowed to receive as determined by BB Corporate.
Alas, BB has disavowed all responsibilty for customer satisfaction in the handy FAQ. As pre-orderers, according to BB, we did not have reason to believe in launch day delivery, even when reinforced by BB salespeople.
I will stop now as I have restated my points many times, it is a sad way of venting for me so thanks to everyone for putting up with my comments!

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:

Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.
