How do run my macbook pro as a headless server?

I want to be able to SSH in to my macbook pro from my other mac and use it for the work tasks that I need done. I don't want to open the lid (small apt), or use an external keyboard or mouse.
Is there a simple way to do this?

  • How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

How well does a Macbook pro and a Macbook air run Xcode, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?

MacBook Pro - no problem, it is an extremely popular computer for running that software. Just look at the Adobe demo videos of their products, most of the time you can see a MacBook Pro running the software in their video.
MacBook Air - should be just as good most of the time.
However, if you get involved in heavy Photoshop work like highly stacked layers/masks/channels, 16 bits per channel or up, or merging HDR or panoramas, the MacBook Pro may be better because it can take 16GB RAM while the MacBook Air can take only 8GB RAM.
Also, if you are going to do serious programming in XCode or Dreamweaver, you may find the MacBook Air screen to be too small for all of the code windows and tool palettes that you may want to open and arrange in those programs. The 15" Retina screen of the MacBook Pro will let you spread out your work and do less window switching. The 11/"13" MacBook Air screens are both smaller and non-Retina so not as sharp.
Even Photoshop is nicer on the 15" MacBook Pro because of the extra screen space for the image with less intrusion by the tool palettes.
In short, if you are a casual user the MacBook Air will be great. If you are a professional with a heavy workload the MacBook Pro may be more efficient overall due to the larger screen and higher RAM capacity.

  • How can I connect MacBook Pro OSX 10.5.2 to G3 Lombard (bronze) OSX 10.1.5?

Can anybody please tell me in simple terms how to connect my MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.2 to my G3 Lombard (bronze keyboard) laptop OS X 10.1.5 so that I can share files. I wish to drag files from the old G3 computer's hard drive into the hard drive of the new MacBook Pro as well as search the old hard drive from the MacBook Pro. I have an ethernet crossover cable as well as regular ethernet cables. Can I connect the computers directly, or should I disconnect my Linksys router from the modem and connect the computers through the router via ethernet?
I have tried both ways, and failed. However, I think I need clear instructions in how to share under both OS X system versions, to set a file's permissions (in both OS X versions), how to set the firewalls (I have Norton Personal Firewall in the G3 and the OS X firewall in the MacBook Pro), how to see the hard drives of the other computer, and how to set anything else properly, as well as any detail that will make this easy to do properly.
Finally, I need to be able to return the settings of the MacBook Pro back to secure settings that will allow me to connect safely when I take it to work and connect to the ethernet network there. Thank you for your help.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

connect the computers through the router via ethernet
Both these computers are capable of File Sharing using IP. Only Macs running 10.3.9 and earlier can use AppleTalk File Sharing. Rendezvous/bonjour can help you on the later 10.5 Mac, but may not be too helpful on the 10.1.5 Mac. So you may need the IP address of the 10.1.5 Mac to connect to it.
On the Mac to share its files:
System Preferences > Sharing > Services
    check "Personal File Sharing" AND
System Preferences > Sharing > FireWall
check "Personal File Sharing" to let that traffic come through.
I expect it is similar for Norton FireWall, but Norton has such a \[well deserved] rotten reputation, and has pretty much pulled out of the Mac market, so help on this may be hard to come by.
On the \[10.5.2] Mac that wants to mount the Shared Volumes:
In the Finder, Go Menu, select "Connect to Server"
Select your 10.2.5 Mac in the window that opens and click connect. If it is not seen, you can browse for it or specify its IP address.
You get a login Window. Login using an ID \[from the 10.1.5 Mac] that has Permissions to read and write the files you want to share. The drive(s) or Folder(s) you specified will mount as network Drives on the desktop. Drag and drop files in both directions to your heart's content.
N.B.: If you choose "Guest", you will have access to the "Shared" folder ONLY.
You have made no changes or compromises to your 10.5.2 Mac, so no Undo is necessary to take it back to work on Monday.

  • I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 and I downloaded the OS X 10.10.2 Update Combo, however when I try and open the package the error message "This volume is used for TimeMachine-backups". Which is not true. I´m using TimeCapsule.

I am running a MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 and I downloaded the OS X 10.10.2 Update Combo.
When I try and open the package after accepting the lincence-agreement and upon choosing the install-volume the error message appears: "This volume is used for TimeMachine-backups".
Which is not true. I´m using a timecapsule for backups.
    How can I proceed?

I am using a MacBook Pro (2010) with 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB, 1067 MHz, DDR3, Startvolume Macintosh HD.
After downloading the package and starting upgrading it asks acceptance of the license-agreement. After that it asks for the volume were to install. And when I click on the Startvolume Macintosh HD (which is the only available on the machine) it says: "The volume is already being used for Time Machine-Backups".
It doesn´t offer to skip that point or to reconfigure the Time Machine settings.
The point is that my Time machine is not and has never used the Mac HD for Backups. In the past I have used an external drive and since 05/2014 I am using a Time Capsule which is appropriately addressed in the Time Machine settings.

  • How to run my macbook in windows mode

how to run my macbook in windows mode, i have a software i need to install on my macbookpro but this software can not be run on the macbook pro software. i was told i can rum my apple in a windows mode?????

    Yes, called BootCamp. Enjoy:  http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Or you can run the Windows OS virtualized using VMWare Fusion ($49), Parallels Desktop ($99) or Oracle VirtualBox (free). This lets you run both OS at the same time: MacOS is the host and Windows the guest.

The yellow RCA jack is called "NTSC Analog Composite Video", or "Video" for short. You need an adapter to "Video".

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?

how to connect my macbook pro to a computer-to-computer network?  My home computer is a Window 8 OS.  Thx.

The easiest way, and it may work from scratch, is to share the folders/drives you want access to on your pc, noticing what are the default parameters (eg "workgroup" etc.).
Then, you can connect your mac directly by ethernet, for instance, and, in Finder, go to > Network, you should see the folders/drives. You may be asked to provide user/password.
Don't get confused by regular/crossed ethernet cable, as mac can cross by software, so a regular cable will be ok.
Anyway, either you isd modem has the ability to connect several devices (multiple ethernet sockets, or wifi), or you can buy a router, which isn't expansive.

  • How to know my macbook pro supports usb2 or usb3?

How to know my macbook pro supports usb2 or usb3 ?
And if it is USB 2, will external hardisk which support usb 2 would be compatible with & vice-versa?
    What would be the cons?

USB 3.0 ports were only added to those MacBook Pros that were released in mid 2012 and later.
So you would have USB 2.0 ports on your machine.
But USB 3.0 and 2.0 are 'compaitble,' somewhat - you just won't be able to get the throughput of a USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 connection.
