How do search engines find me?

Do I need key words? How do I do that, and how long does it take for the web crawlers to find and include me?

  • What do I do so that search engines find me easier?

    Hello,
I was told by a friend that I could put a list of words relating to my business into my website somehow so that search engines would find me easier when they are typed in to the search bar but I dont know how to go about it.
Ive had my website for 6 months and still 'google for instance' cant find me unless i use only my title "Crafty Balloons" and even that only showed results in the last 2 weeks.
I would like to be found using search words like "balloon twisting" "balloons" "entertainment" "party planning" etc...
also I would like my images to show up when people type "balloon dragon" etc into a search engine can this be done too?
    please help
ps I love this support site. you guys are the greatest

Actually you need to do a bit more tweaking than has been discussed.
First you need to add meta description tags in the <head> section of each of your pages. Write a brief to the point description of what services you are offering such as:
Balloon twisting in Mandurah, WA. We provide all kinds of balloons for all kinds of balloon ocassions, birthday party balloons, festive, fete and corporate function balloons, store, promotion and wedding balloons.
Next you need to get some of the important keywords into correctly marked up html on your page.
<h> tags will be seen as more important by the Google spider so you should try and somehow incorporate the important keywords into those tags.
On your home page you have the following inside a <h2> tag which is good
    Birthday Parties
    Festivals and Fetes
    Corporate Functions
    Store Promotions
    Weddings and Gifts
but youre not providing any of the above youre providing balloons for those ocassions. So you should re-write something like below:
<h1>Welcome to Crafty Balloons based in Mandurah, WA</h1>
<h2>We provide all kinds of balloons and balloon twisting for birthday parties, festivals, fetes, corporate functions, store promotions and weddings.</h2>
Then you can add the two paragraphs that already exist.
Also your keyword list should have a comma between each entry - balloons, balloon, crafts, party, parties, etc
If you make those changes to each page and wait a few days before typing into Google - balloon twisting in Mandurah Wa or - balloons for corporate functions in Mandurah then you have a good chance of being listed.
Most people when they search for something such as balloons will search locally first so having your location as a prominant keyword is always a good option.
Try to get listed in as many good FREE dircetories on the web as possible. It has been proven that the more inbound links you have to your site then Google finds it more 'interesting' and will elevate you up the rankings.

  • How does search engine actually works?

Dear all, just wondering how does the search engine in plumtree actually works. I mean whatever the folders, files, etc we upload to the sever database, will it place under it's own categories such that it's own engine will search faster? or is it all the folders, files, etc will dump into the final category? erm... get what i trying to say?
    thanks!

I suppose by "paging" you mean giving n results per page ?
Consider leaving out unneccesary information, eg. store only the id's for the elements in the search result and retreive the full data from the database as needed.
If even the id's takes up too much space, consider only storing enough for a couple of pages. Then redo the search if the user tries to access a page for which the id's are not stored. If most users only see the first page, and very few see for instance more than three pages, then this will save you a lot of storage, at a price of slightly inconveniencing the rare user who wants to see more than three pages of results.

  • SEO - how do search engines treat invisible text?

    Hi,
I've created a website using Adobe Muse and to be able to include a lot of information in a small space, I've created an animated tabbed panel in Adobe Edge Animate.
I've started to go through the site to bump the SEO and I've realised that the text in the Edge animations are flattened - much like images.  For search engines to recognise and use the text, I thought I could duplicate the text and position it behind the background image or turn the opacity to [0] so the user cannot see the text.  Will search engines still recognise the text?  And if it does am I damaging my site if they see it as spam or black hat tricks?
I've also split a lot of the headings up into letters so each one can be animated separately - would search engines read this as one word or a string of unattached letters?  Again, I was thinking of creating a new text box with the word spelled out but with the opacity at [0].  Is this the best thing to do or are there better ways of doing this?
    Thanks

No point in just slapping the text into a noscript tag. If there is no active JavaScript with matching content it is considered out of bounds just as well and search engines will not make anything of it. That being so, the answer is probably in your Edge file - you overdid it and instead of placing content natively in Muse using widgets crammed in everything there. So short of looking for fixes after the fact, you probably need to rethink your overall strategy and forego some fancy animations in favor of better searchability and user interaction.

  • Search engine finds wrong iweb site

    I have two iweb websites
    www.jazzana.com
    www.royalstrings.com
when I use google seach and type in Jazzana
the result shows royalstrings website www.royalstrings.com
if I type in the url www.jazzana.com
    the site comes up
    the royalstrings site
has no issues search locates it url is fine
    just started happening today?
    help please

It would appear that, some how, Google has the wrong info for the Jazzana site. You need to correct that, get them to re index this site and then wait for the new results to appear.
It might be easier to go into your Google account and remove the site and then start the process of adding it again from the beginning.....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/SearchEngines/SEO.html
Get a new verification file, upload it to - iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites - and verify it with Google.
The url to give to Google is....
    http://web.me.com/username/
Create a new sitemap.xml, upload it to the same folder, add the site to your Google account and verify the sitemap.
After you have done this it will take a while for the results of a search to show the correct info.

  • How come search engines still disappear after localstore.rdf is reset?

Well I keep adding Google and such to my search bar but with every start of Firefox they disappear again. I have already deleted the localstore.rdf and did a complete reinstall of Firefox but it has not helped

You can search on the <b>about:config</b> page to see if there are still prefs that link to delta-search and reset them via the right-click context menu.
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
You can also edit the prefs.js file in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed and removed those lines.

  • Adding keywords and phrases for high search engine hits

I'm new to iWeb and most things seem to be working. I have one question and one problem, hopefully you guys can help out.
Question: how do I add html code that is not visible on the page but that will help Google and other search engines find my page using keywords, phrases, etc.? Please assume I know very little about this and need the holding hand explanation.
Problem: I have a media file portion on my website that displays pictures (working very well) and one that is supposed to show a movie (not working at all). The movie was made with iMovie and has an .m4v extension. When you click on the link for the movie it shows a blank screen on Firefox and a Quicktime logo with a big question mark on Safari. I'm attempting to view the website on my Mac with the latest Quicktime software on it but it doesn't work. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Some additional info: the hosting provider is 1and1.com and I have a Windows server package (unfortunately). Also, if I publish the site to a folder the movie area works flawlessly, it just does not work on the hosted site.
    Thanks!!

You don't need to do post publication manual editing of your site to add keywords and other metadata. You can use the freeiWeb SEO Tool. If you're publishing to MobileMe you can add them after publication. If you're publishing to a commercial hosting server you'll need to publish to a folder on the desktop, run SEO and then use a 3rd party ftp client like the free Cyberduck to upload your site.
If you have to republish SEO remembers what you added and can quickly add them again before uploading.

  • Meta Tag or Search Engine related?

Most SE results only search and show what's in the
Description or Title meta tags. Do I need to do something specific
where the search engine will search the CONTENT of the pages,
rather than what's in the Meta tags, or is this just a trait of how
    some search engines work? Thanks!

Precisely! And that's why I was careful to not refer to it as
    such: "Title
    and Description tags"

  • Flash & Search Engines

    Hi Folks,
I have an intro page with and enter button that is all
flash.... this isn't going to work is it? The engines won't find
this page will they? If they can great...I just was wondering what
the best way to go about having the search engine find a flash
intro page like this. For example Google says to submitt your top
level page...well could i register the actual home page that the
intro page is pointing to.which is Flash & HTML both.
Thanks so much for your time on this!

At the very least with the "arrival" of the active content
update, the use of something like swf-object ist very adviseable.
Using that properly gives you the chance to solve this
problem (and others) in a very elegant way.
Just put enough info into the alternative text (that will be
replaced by flash if installed) an a link to the actual home page
that will help a great deal.
Submitting to google will help, but only for goole (yes there
    are othere search-engines out there ;-) ).

  • How do you get search engines to find you

I'm creating my site for a client that wants to be the top of the lists when someone types in certain keywords. How can i do this? Pay for it? Free?
Someone told me to put as much information in a hidden text box on the homepage....
    Thanks!
    Kara
    http://web.mac.com/karastout/iWeb/eggers%20site/cellar.html

Whomever told you to hide text is leading you down the wrong path. Doing dirty tricks like that may help you in the extremely short term but the bigger search engines are smart enough to figure out what you're doing. Dirty tricks are a great way to get your site banned from the search engines.
The best way to get good results is to make sure all important text is actually text on the page (not images), have fresh content (blogs are great examples of this, they tend to do well on search engines), and find good ways to get other sites to link back to your site (link farms are not what I'm talking about but think along the lines of reviews, interviews, forum signature posts, etc.).
Be very wary of people telling you they can guarantee you first page results in search engines. They may do that for a short while but search engines are constantly evolving and can drop you as quickly—if not quicker—than pick you up.
It takes time to get a site in the top rankings but there are other methods out there that are better in the long run.

  • "how do I find the list of search engines in my firefox brouser?"

I am trying to get rid of this irksome "sweetIM". And suggestions say remove it from my list of search engines. Where is this list? And, I am only an intermediate skill comp user.

I"m guessing that what happened is that you or someone inadvertently allowed the default search method to be changed in the keyword url search.
Search for any add ons or unwanted plugins and remove them. Then if that doesn't have the effect that you want,
go to your url window and type in
    about:config.
Its going to tell you that you are voiding your free and not often used warranty.. Just click the "i'll be careful I promise button.
you will see a full list of things in alphabetical order. Scroll past them and find Keyword Url.
Right click on that and select modify.. type in google..Modify the search string to read google and then close your firefox and reopen it. Your default google search should work when you type in the keyword terms you're looking for.

  • I don't want Yahoo as my Firefox search engine; I want Google!! How do I get Yahoo out of my computer cause I can't find it in the control panel. It's like Yahoo's a Virus!!! AAAHHH

Yahoo infiltrated my computer by downloading a free program that i realized was no good. removed the program since, however yahoo is still here and replaced my google search engine on firefox. I can't find it on add/remove programs on my PC and it's driving me nuts. I now have to use google chrome. I miss my google firefox I've removed Firefox and re-downloaded it and it doesn't help. please help me

I just discovered a solution! Go to the upper right hand corner in Firefox where the search bar is. Click on the icon and you'll get a drop-down menu. Go to "manage search engines". You can then delete all the no-good ones, like Bing and Yahoo.

  • How can I find search engines for search bar?

This is actually a suggestion; but, when I tried the suggestion page, it appeared that nothing was happening when I hit the "Submit" button. (Yes, JavaScript was enabled.) Here is what I wrote:
From the search bar drop down "Manage Search Engines" dialogue, there is a link called "Get more search engines." That sends you to addons.mozilla.org, which I find to be almost useless for finding a search engine add-on. Why not send the user to the Mycroft Project, http://mycroft.mozdev.org/? That is vastly more helpful. I tried to find "Google News" at the add-ons site and failed completely. I also tried "Rotten Tomatoes" and got a poor one there. However, at Mycroft, searches for the above two immediately returned good results. I did not know about Mycroft until I complained, on the Firefox forum, about my inability to find Google News.

    This worked for me

  • How do I access Manage Search Engines, I can't find it on my FF window?

I'm trying to delete all remnants of Conduit.com. I've removed most of them, but the FF home page is still under the control of Conduit. I can't even find the search bar icon. Sorry, but I'm not very computer literate. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

The Manage Search Engines option is on the menu that appears when you click the icon at the left end of the search box (usually it's the "g" for Google but your icon may be different). Is the box missing?
To switch your default search engine back to Google, and your "new tab page" back to thumbnails, you can use this extension:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/
If Firefox ignores those changes, you might still have a Conduit-related extension. You can disable ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
