Thanks for the clarification. Since I have the ipod
nano and there is no update for that at this time,
there is no reason for me to run the ipod updater.
Well, no, not unless you want to erase the iPod.
But - in the event that I do need to run a new ipod
updater in the future, what's the deal with having to
buy an AC adapter just to update the software? Is
this true? You said “maybe” I need one, which means
I won't know until I start the process of updating
the ipod, that I "might" need to buy an AC adapter?
Is this correct for the nano? Because it did not
come with a AC adapter. What am I suppose to do?

The Nano is a USB powered device. In order to update or restore it, you will need either an AC adapter or a USB 2 capable computer (USB 1 is not good enough). Basically the device needs a higher power input than usual for this sort of thing, so that it can update its flash memory without risk of damage due to power loss. Thus it requires power input when this is occuring. The AC Adapter is a sure fire way, a USB 2 port is almost as good.
