How do you apply a gradient to a stroke?

Ive done this in Indesign forever but its not working the same way in Illustrator.  I have my gradient swatch created but when i click my stroke and give it the color gradient swatch, it always applies it to the fill.  What am I doing wrong?

Kelly,
You should be able to do it in the following way:
1) Create an Artbrush from a blend corresponding to a lengthways gradient (you may create a long horizontal rectangle and a short on on top of it at one end, give them the end colours, and Object>Blend>Make with options Smooth Color and  Align to Path);
2) Create the path to follow, and copy it so you have two; hide the lower one (in the Layers palette/panel);
3) Apply your logo brush to the path, Object>Expand Appearance, DirectSelect the spine of the path and delete it, so you have the logos alone, and with all of them still selected Object>Compound Path>Make;
4) Show the lower copy of the path from 2) (in the Layers palette/panel) and apply the Artbrush from 1) to it; you may adjust the Stroke Weight so the lower path extends past the logos;
5) Select both the path from 4) and the Compound of logos from 3) and Object>Clipping Mask>Make.

  • How do you apply a gradient to Levels Gamma in CS2?

    In Adobe Photoshop versions 5 and 7, while retouching photographs I was able to change a levels gamma setting on a selected area, then make the levels change gradual from one side to the other by using the gradient tool. This enabled me to compensate for a gradual fall-off in brightness across an area of the photo. But in version CS2 (Windows XP Professional), the gradient tool seems to work only for added colors, not for the levels gamma.
    Does anyone know how to apply a gradient to a levels gamma change in CS2?  I can't seem to get it to work either on non-layered levels or on a levels layer.

    Has it ever worked? If so, what's changed? (provide comments in description field): No
    Same results with different file?: Yes

    Recent System Hardware or Software change?: Not Applicable

    Thanks for your reply -- this is a novel approach I haven't enough experience to figure out for myself!  Chalk one up for the forum!   In the meantime, I think I've found the "missing link" from the simple way I did it in Photoshop 5 and 7 to a similar way in CS2 -- I surveyed all the Gradient Presets, and found one which lookied exactly like the oft-repeated black-to-white preset, but which the tool-tip revealed is actually a "levels" preset.  By selecting it, I was able to use the gradient tool to apply my levels change gradually across a selected area (or across the whole image if nothing is selected).  This way I avoid having to edit masks.
    But thanks for steering me on to a new way of thinking that I need to explore!

  • How do you apply a gradient to text?

    In CS5, I open my gradient tool, though it does not apply to the text.
    What do you do?
    Thanks.

    web.boards,
    What is this technically doing to the text? What other types of things can be done after this is applied?
    What it says: adds a new fill that may be changed independently, and quite a few things can be done.
    Just to see a few, you may try this:
    1) Create the Live Type;
    2) In the Color palette/panel change to 100% M, 0% K;
    now you have changed the solid colour of the Type itself, without needing a new fill;
    3) Appearance flyout>Add New Fill, in the Toolbox click Gradient instead of Color and change the values to 100% M and 100% Y, and then Effect>Warp>Upper Arc;
    Now you may shudder at the sight of an arc with a Magenta>Yellow gradient on top of a Magenta plain Type partially visible underneath.
    You may also create some nice things, and you can just start trying out what works.
    The proof of the pudding is the eating.

  • How do you apply a master page to multiple documents at the same time?

    How do you apply a master page to multiple documents at the same time?

    Hi friends,
    Thank you for trying to help me out.
    Let me explain it a bit to remove the ambiguity.
    I have 10 documents nested under a book. Each of these documents have 'n' number of pages. I want to apply my custom made master page "First" to the first page of all these 10 documents in one go. The remaining pages of the documents have to be in default "Right" master page format. How will I do it?
    I tried selecting all the documents and importing the formats from another document with the custom made "First" master page. The master page format is getting imported but the first page of all the documents still remain with the default "Right" master page format.
    I think now my question is more clear...

  • How do you make a customized template?? When I customize an original template it does not apply it to the whole document! How do you apply style changes permanently to your document???

    When one customize text styles or spacing between paragraphs. How do you apply settings permanently to a document???
    Should you create a new template???

    Happily, when you edit a document created by a given template, the changes aren't stored in the template.
    If you want to get a template embedding your changes, you need to use :
    File > Save as Template
    then use the newly created custom template as starting point.

  • How do you apply a vector mask to a folder in Photoshop CS6?

    The ways you apply vector masks in CS6 is different than in CS5.
    I knew how to apply a vector mask to a folder of layers in CS5.
    I cannot figure out how to do it in CS6.
    So my question is:
    How do you apply a vector mask to a folder in Photoshop CS6?
    And while we're at it, what are the best methods for applying vector masks to regular layers?
    Thanks.

    thomasbricker wrote:

    Yes and that's why I wrote the words "vector tool" and never mentioned a pen. (Although the instructions would be exactly the same for using the Pen Tool because the Pen Tool is a vector tool.)
    which I then want to turn into a layer group mask.
    And yes, this does not work the same way as it did in CS5.
    I wish it did. : |
    Adding a vector mask to a layer or group is exactly the same in CS5.1 and CS6 on my Mac. Maybe that's done differently in CS5 than in CS5.1, but it seems unlikely.
    You have the layer or group targeted. Now draw a rectangular path after making sure the Rectangle Tool is in Path mode, and not Shape mode and not Pixel mode. Then Cmd/Ctrl-click the Add Mask button at bottom of Layers panel.

  • How do you apply the school proxy settings to the ipad to filter website searches?

    How do you apply the school proxy settings to the ipad to filter website searches?

    Hi Stebop1987,
    You will want to apply a configuration profile with Global HTTP proxy settings to your proxy server. Use Apple Configurator or an MDM to deploy the configuration profile to your fleet of iPads. I recommend you contact your web filter provider for detials on what proxy details to enter in the configuration profile (type, server, port, username, password).
    Hope this helps!

  • How do you apply the EQ settings to a particular genre or album?

    How do  you apply the EQ settings to a particular genre or an album instead of individually applying the setting to one song at a time.

    It's probably easiest to first be in list view and have your Column browser up.
    Set the Column Browser to show Genres.
    In the Genres column, select the Genre you want to apply the EQ to. Now select all of the songs that appear for that genre.
    Right-click on the blue mass and select "Get Info". Say yes to the dialog asking if you're sure you want to edit information for multiple items.
    In the Options tab of the Multiple Item Information window, check "Equaliser preset", pick the equaliser setting you want and click "OK".
    Processing may take a while if you've got a lot of songs in that genre.
    For an album, it's basically the same process.
    Set the Column browser to show albums.
    In the Albums column, select the album you want to apply the EQ to. Now select all of the songs that appear for that album.
    Right-click on the blue mass and select "Get Info". Say yes to the dialog asking if you're sure you want to edit information for multiple items.
    In the Options tab of the Multiple Item Information window, check "Equaliser preset", pick the equaliser setting you want and click "OK".

    .... or you can use Soundtrack Pro (export your file to SP with command shift+w) which comes with Logic Studio as an external Audio editor, do all the Plug rendering in there and bring the file back into Logic which works great for me.
    I tried to find the thread we had going on here about this very thing, but couldn't find it (it probably got deleted, because it was informative...)
    But opening Soundtrack Pro from Logic is THE way to do this. If I had known how easy this was, I would've been doing this months ago.
    Just this week, mixing a song, and there was a serious plosive on a word on the lead vocal rack. I hit shift/W, and the vocal file opened in Soundtrack Pro. I highlighted the plosive, applied a low cut from the channel EQ, flattened it, and quit STP.
    The vocal file in Logic immediately updated, and it was done. The EQ was applied permanently to that one section of the vocal file, and I didn't have to automate anything, or export anything.
    It took less than a minute. Seriously... this is the way to handle destructive edits to audio. It's VERY easy to do.

  • How do you add a gradient to a (bezier) stroke?

    I created a stroke with the bezier tool, just two points. I want to have a distinct gradient to the color but I can't figure out how to do it. I added the gradient colorize filter but it doesn't seem to do it. Any advice?

    Gradient Colorize works a little differently than you expect.  If you already have a gradient image (any image that has a dynamic range will do) and apply a Gradient Colorize filter, the image will have its colors remapped to the gradient colors based on the luminance levels (0 - 255; color converted to gray/brightness) -- light colors assuming the left end colors in the filter gradient; dark colors assume the colors at the right end.
    So, to create a line colored as a gradient, the easiest way is to create a shape, color it with the gradient you want, add an Image mask to it and apply the line to the mask.
    OR
    you can convert the outline from a solid to Airbrush. In the Style. Go into the Stroke inspector and select Stroke Color Mode > Color over Stroke and select your gradient there (I used one similar to Rainbow). You'll probably also want to tighten up the spacing (in Style) and the Brush Profile (open up the gradient and move the white tab far to the right.)  The problem with Airbrush is the brush dabs are always circles and your gradient will look like a pole:
    So the solution to that is to use Brush Type  > Image, draw a small white rectangle or square and drop it into the Brush Source.
    There are other ways (involving a replicator -- use your line as the source for Geometry (if it's not a simple straight line); set the color mode to Over Pattern; adjust the Points higher for a smoother effect.)
    There's usually more than one way to accomplish things in Motion.

  • How do you apply the same password policy to every PDF document you create with inDesign?

    All,
    Adobe peeps!,
    I don't know if this is really supported with inDesign 5.5, but here is my my use case:
    I constantly create more than 10 PDFs a day using inDesign
    On  all PDF's I create, i want to apply password security to protect them
    But in order to do so, within inDesign, I am   always forced to go to the "security dialogue" pane to set up the same permission  and passwords over and over again
    This gets tiring :/
    So what I am hoping to do is  the following:
    Like acrobat, I want to create a password policy within inDesign
    I want all PDFs created to have such a password policy  be automatically applied
    I know acrobat supports something like this (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d68.w.h tml), but, unless I may have missed something, the Acrobat feature is limited. That is, the help link  does not tell me how to automatically do this with Acrobat either (the link does not explain to me how to "automatically apply the same password security policy to every PDF document I save within the application). I think the only way to do so is via "Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management ES", but for non server users, I am hoping there is another way.
    So my questions are:
    Is it possible to create password security policies in inDesign?
    Is it possible to apply the same password security policy to every PDF i create in inDesign?
    If not, can I change default settings within Acrobat ProX to automatically apply a password security policy everytime I save a PDF?
    If all fails, do you guys know of any extensions that can support this?
    Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Steve,
    Thanks for your notes. To follow up on your response.
    Bummer. I kinda had a hunch at this inDesign limitation.
    I have been aware of the method for setting up of a security policy within Acrobat. While this feature does cut down some of the work involved in creating and applying password policies to pdfs, what I am looking for with Acrobat is to apply the same password policy to every document I save from the app. Automatically. Without having to manualy select a policy.
    I think my solution will have to lie in me creating some sort of script to help support this need. I don't think Acrobat Pro X has the capabilities to allow me to tinker with, say, creating a save PDF preset that will allow me to automatically apply a password policy.
    PS. I am using acrobat pro x.

  • How do you apply Single Responsibility principle to a repository

    I am trying to apply "SOLID" whenever I can and try to use common sense and avoid a pattern when I see that a pattern is creating more problems than it's trying to solve. I don't want to apply a pattern and make life difficult for somebody else using
    my code just for the sake "I write patterns" if you see what I mean.
    Now I am struggling with one of the principles that I thought was the easiest to grasp: "SRP".
    How do you practically apply this principle to repositories?
    Let's suppose I have a
    IEmployeeRepository
    IUserRepository
    IProductRepository
    and commonly they will have methods like these:
    public interface IUserRepository
    User GetUser(int id);
    IEnumerable<User> GetAllUser();
    void DeleteUser(int id);
    same for employees and products.
    Are we saying that each of these method should be a class on it's own? even though at times we are talking a single line of code?

    Hello,
    "Are we saying that each of these method should be a class on it's own? even though at times we are talking a single line of code?"
    interface is not a method. It has its own definition and you can refer to here:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/87d83y5b.aspx
    Any from your question I think you may still confused about the usage of interface. In this way, I will recommend you have a look at the following blog:
    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/18743/Interfaces-in-C-For-Beginners
    "Interfaces in C # provide a way to achieve runtime polymorphism. Using interfaces we can invoke functions from different classes through the same Interface reference, whereas using virtual functions we can invoke functions from different classes in
    the same inheritance hierarchy through the same reference"
    With the blog you can check that code to see details about how to use interface.

  • How do I Apply a Gradient to an Existing Mask?

    I  have a levels layer created from a selection.  Photoshop  uses a mask to protect/exclude the unselected area on the adjustment layer.  Now I need to add a gradient to that same mask.  But, when I try to add the gradient it throws away the original selection mask.  How can I add the gradient such that affects only the selected area?
    I'm using CS4 on Win7 64bit

    Grouping the layer with a blank layer and applying the mask and gradient worked.  Thanks.
    The other two solutions may well work, but I didn't understand them.  When I tried to use a gradient fill layer it covered the selected area -- that is, it acted as a gradient fill rather than a gradient mask.   Same problem with the gradient overlay, plus I didn't see how to orient the gradient.   Probably my ignorance.
