How do you burn an iMovie project to a DVD without using iDVD themes?

I created a presentation (slide show with music) in iMovie and need to burn it to a DVD.  When I pull it into iDVD, it forces me to pick a theme which puts more music in.  I just want it the way I have it in iMovie!  How do I do that?

(From fellow poster Mishmumken: )
How to create a DVD in iDVD without menu (there are several options):
1. Easy: Drop your iMovie in the autoplay box in iDVD's Map View, then set your autoplay item (your movie) to loop continously. Disadvantage: The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
2. Still easy: If you don't want your (autoplay) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the dropzone (text needs to be black as well). Disadvantage: The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
3. Still quite easy but takes more time: Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage: One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software: Roxio Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn. Disadvantage: you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
5. The "hard way": Postproduction with myDVDedit (freeware)
Tools necessary: myDVDedit ( http://www.mydvdedit.com )
• create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
• Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
• Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
• Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
• Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
• Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
• Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager:

Our resident expert, Old Toad, also recommends this: there is a 3rd export/share option that give better results.  That's to use the Share ➙ Media Browser menu option.  Then in iDVD go to the Media Browser and drag the movie into iDVD where you want it.
Hope this helps!

Yes, iDVD is probably best for you.  Toast is also good, but if you are on a budget, Burn is a free download:

  • How do I burn an iMovie project onto a DVD?

I have recently completed an iMovie project, and I want to burn the project onto a DVD. I have exported the project and burnt it, but it only opens with iTunes and Quicktime, and I was hoping to play the movie on a DVD player. I am desperate and need assistance ASAP !!

When in iMovie, click Share then iDVD. In iDVD you can customize your dvd menu. After you are done, then click File, Burn DVD or ⌘+R. And it will ask you to insert your blank disk and then it will start burning. After it has completed the burn, it will ask you if you want to make another disk (if you want multiple copies). Your movie should then be viewable on any DVD player.

    Hey,
If you don't mind a third-party software, you can try the DVD Creator to burn any kind of videos to DVD with the ability to play on DVD player~~The process is really easy and you can DIY the DVD menu if you like. (offer the guide to you!)

  • Burn multiple imovie projects to one dvd with menu

How do i burn multiple Imovie projects to one dvd with roxio toast 10? Can i add all of the projects or do i need to export them as a quicktime movie first or something?

You can share the first movie from iMovie, but all the others will need to be exported from iMovie as movies and dragged into the iMovie project.

Macs don't come bundled with iDVD anymore. If you have an older Mac that came with an iLife disk, you can install iDVD from that.
If your Mac didn't come with iDVD, you can still find iLife '11 disks in some stores.
There are other programs that can create DVDs, but I've never used them. From what I've heard, they're not as good as iDVD.

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • How do you merge 2 iMovie projects?

How do you merge 2 iMovie projects together? I have a 2 yr old iMac with iMovie 2011. Thank-you.

That's an easy solution. However you did not consider the harmful effects of the additional compression. Please consider that the "raw" video is already compressed before it leaves the camera. Then again as it's exported from iMovie the first time. After merging the projects (with your technique) it get compressed a third time. And perhaps a fourth time if the movie is burned onto a DVD.
I'm very familiar with the loss of image and sound quality due to excessive compression, because I produced 43 separate makeup application tutorials for a manufacturer's website. Everything was fine until they decided that they also wanted me to combine all of them onto a DVD. My video was shot at high-def so that wasn't an issue. The issue was how to combine all 43 videos without a substancial loss of image quality?
I tried the obvious method (proposed by elikness) and found that my text graphics (still photos) suffered the worst - literally jagged black text that looked almost blurry. So I replaced all my graphic panels and burned the DVD. My client was satisfied. I was not. God only knows what the 90-minute (combined) DVD will look like after they've paid somebody to make 10,000 copies.
    thank you - robert

  • How can I save my iMovie Project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC and any DVD player

I have an iMac, purchased in January 2011. How can I save an iMovie project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC or any DVD player

I will give you a basic primer, not going to get to in depth, as far as parameters, size of project, or the storage size of your usb flash drive, etc.
    1. you have your finished iMovie project. Under iMovie>Share menu. Choose export using quicktime.
    2. make Movie self contained. This way your Mov, Mvi, etc files will be part of the movie and it can play without having to reference the events, because it is actually there.
    3. so, now on your desktop  ( or any where else set up quicktime to save your file) you will see a quicktime file.
Drag & Drop that file on to the icon of your USB Flash Drive, etc.
    4. Details that I omitted because I admit I am not well versed. Most Likely that quicktime file is larger than your USB Flash Drive. You have to use one of quicktime compression work flows, also if you open the just created quicktime file. It will open quicktime player and under the File>Export you have to options. I have a Movie that was 42GB 1080P, I exported it as a 720P, so it would still be playable on a large screen and now the new file was less than 2.5GB.
    5. Oh, no i just realized that the file should be playable on a PC, as long as the PC has quicktime for windows installled and you left that USB formated at MS DOS as it came originally, or a PC will not recognize it. Will it open up on your Blu-Ray Player that has a USB port, not sure. Since there is no menu. but, perhaps just pushing play will start movie.
Hope this is of some help.

  • Everytime I try to burn an iMovie project to a DVD with iDVD, the disc is ejected during the Burning and Multiplexing phase before it's completed.

For months I have been unable to burn any iMovie project to a DVD using iDVD.  During the Burning and Multiplexing phase the disc is ejected before it's complete.  I went the Genius Bar and after many tests I was told that my disc drive was pretty much dead.  The person that helped recommended that I buy an external DVD burner from amazon.  I bought the new drive and I can now burn files, but I'm still encountering the same issue burning a movie.  Does anyone have any idea what'g going on?  I'm extremely frustrated at this point!

Read this treatise on Multiplexing by  Bengt Wärleby: HT1645 I was burning a DVD and the...: Apple Support Communities.
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use iMovie. There's a iMovie Support Community where everybody uses iMovie. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.   https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/imovie
