See V.K.'s post in this thread. The link to Niel's guide isn't working.

  • How do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition?

how do you increase the volumne size of a hard drive partition? the drive is set up into 3 partitions C, HP_tools and, recovery, C has space and would like to move some to HP_tools that is full. when I run backup I get drive full. I have run backup now to an external drive so that is not an issue.

    Hi,
Firstly please don't keep anything in HP_TOOLS except things have been there. You can use Windows systems tool called Disk  Management. Please use the following tutorial:

  • How do you change permissions on Lightroom 4 web export?

I am having issues with my web module on Lightroom 4 (Mac OS 10.9.5). "an unknown error occurred" while trying to upload to my FTP (no changes in my FTP). Bandaid fix was to export to local folder and upload via Filezilla. However, now that is no longer working and although upload completes, the URL takes you to a "Forbidden - do not have permission to read this file" page. Lightroom is changing the permissions of each file to 000 instead of 644 for index files and 755 for all others. How can I change the permissions settings in Lightroom?

I just did an upload directly from Lightroom 5.7.1 using OSx 10.8.5 and Cpanel on the hosting site shows the permissions as 644 for ALL files and 755 for folders.  I don't think there was any changes to the web module between Lr 4 and 5.   Have you tried using Filezilla to  delete all the files on the host and reupload.  A few years ago I had the exact same problem and something got changed on the server where some of the file permissions got changed and I had to start over to get things working.

  • How do you change permissions of "Home" folders on a Mavericks Server??

I have a test server and test machine. I installed Mavericks and the OSX server app onto my test server and installed Mavericks onto my test mac.
I have created a Folder which will house the home folders of users, made this into a shared folder, ticked the option that allows it to be used as a homes folder. I seem to have read/write access to the folder but I have not got access to the folders within the home folder; the users home folders. As an administrator I need access to all the folders.
I changed permissions to add myself read/write access to the folders but then this breaks the home sync and when the user logs in I get an error message that says the "Home folder is not where it is supposed to be" or something along those lines.

You can enable root by gui if needed.
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Uitily
When you open the Directory Utility you will have to click the lock on the lower left and authenticate as an admin user.  Next go to the menu bar and the "edit" menu.  Click edit, then click "enable root user".  It iwll prompt you to create a root password.   Once you do you will have the "other" option at the login window after restart.  Or if you just enter username and password, use "root" for username and the password you created for password.
When you are done doing whatever you need make sure to reopen Directory Utility and disable the root user.

  • How do you change permissions?

    (See nearby threads)
I'm sure that the problem with getting OS classic to start and Final Cut to install is that the Classic bits are locked, that that might be why there is a gripe about not being able to update classic-specific files. The install DVD is terribly designed if so, with no warning in any thread I've found anywhere on the net.
This PowerBook G4 is set up once installed with my friend the owner's username and password. The Classic System Folder is 'locked' and assigned to 'system'.
    Very grateful for any help.

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2267670&tstart=0
is the link to my main thread - I described it as 'nearby' because all three of my threads are adjacent on the Apple site; however I understand there may be other means of viewing the forum where this isn't apparent. Sorry about that.
Today after many hours some semblance of a useable system has been in place - the only thing is this was with the UFS file system, which I then read was a bit slow, which I imagine isn't great for someone using the Mac entirely for film. I had completely wiped the drive, using the option where you fill the sectors with zeros. My hope is that that got rid of a problem. I'm currently doing the same with the Mac OS extended (journaled) file system in the hope that all will be well when I put the OS and Final Cut back on.
Under UFS also the hard drive did show up alongside the network boot option, and I have got the hang of the mysterious option button and the like.
As Final Cut did install with the UFS system, if all goes badly this time I'll wipe things again and set things up with UFS, and then see what my friend thinks. That is, unless someone here chips in with a better suggestion, for example if the fact that UFS partially solved things suggests something obvious.
We had hoped to set up a dual boot with Ubuntu's power pc version but that wouldn't install with the UFS system. That's not a big problem though - it was just an extra I suggested as OS X 10.3 seems a bit useless for going online now you can't upgrade Safari or use the latest Firefox with it.
    All further feedback welcome.

  • How do you copy your iphoto library to ext. hard drive?

I am sorry to ask this lame question, but: How do you copy your iPhoto library to an external hard drive, just to back it up? I'm confused, because of three things: a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library; b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years, AND c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is, what it does, etc.
So, I apologize, but if someone can help me figure what I would like to think should be a very simple backup, I would be grateful. Thank you very much.

I am sorry to ask this lame question, but: How do you copy your iPhoto library to an external hard drive, just to back it up?
Drag it to the external drive
    a) I can't seem to find, in iPhoto pref's, where you select what the "path" is to the library;
There not one - you change the path by launching iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and using the select library option to repoint to a different libary - however you would not do this to a backup library - it would just be a copy
    b) in the iPhoto library folder on my computer (which is NOT on my boot drive, but a different internal drive..) the newest "year" folder in there says 2005, yet we have imported many newly-taken photos for the last 3 years,
This is probably an unused older library - a backup for a previous version
    c) in the user>Pictures folder there is a "file" called iPhoto Library, but I can't quite figure out exactly what that is,
That probably is your iPhoto library and it is probably not a file but a Unix style "package"
Launch iPhoto and in events view select a photo and right click (control click) on it and select the show file option to see the path to the currently active library - I find the column view the easiest to see the path

  • How do you install 10.7 onto a new hard drive

I have a 2008 Mackbook pro with a 200 gb hard drive which is full.( it filled up very quickly after installing 10.7. I have the 10.5 disks that came with it and the 10.6 disks that I got from Apple last year. Then I upgraded to 10.7 by downloading it from apple. I have a time machine back up copy of my system on a firewire hard drive.
I am going to Install an new hard drive and was thinking of doing that myself to save a few dollars of instalation fees, but I am not sure haw to reinstall 10.7?
Do I Install 10.6 from the disks and then download 10.7? Do I have to upgrade to 10.6.8 and then 10.7? Or is there some way of getting directly to 10.7?

How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

  • HT4796 how do i transfer data from my external PC hard drive to my MAC?

MY PC died but i had previously backed it up to an external hard drive.  i can't figure out how to transfer data, such as outlook address contacts, word files and photos, to my MAC.  Help please!

  • How to use time capsule as an external wireless hard drive?

I have the latest version of time capsule and would like to use it not only for backups but also to save some files that I don't want to keep in my Macbook Air, which is very limited in terms of storage. Is it possible?

    Here is my general list.
    Store files on the TC.
This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
    Major issues.
    1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
    2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
    3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no control. In fact the TC is so lacking in controls for even the router side.. that you cannot do more than the most basic of setups.
The following are controls on the hard disk side.
Reformat it. You can name the share. You can do a full archive of the whole disk. This will go at a speed of aprox. 30-50GB/Hr so calculate how long an archive of a full 2TB will take.
    4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
Even apple btw say don’t do it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
    5. iTunes can constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
    6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
    7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
Read pondini for some work arounds.

  • How do you Determine the Largest Size/Fastest Speed Hard Drive

In general, how do you determine the maximum hard drive size/speed you can upgrade to?

As long as the drive your are considering physically fits as already stated there is no maximum size you can install. Please complete your profile so we know what machine you have.
If your machine is covered by a warranty or AppleCare I would recommend against installing another HD as this may invalidate the warranty. I would recommend in that case using a Firewire 800 external HD instead.

  • How do you get iMovie to save to another hard drive?

I am trying out the new Imovie and can not figure out how to change Imovie from saving to my SSD/boot drive. I want it to save to my other hard drive. I used the "old" Imove and it was fairly simple. Can this be done?

Yes, just go to File>Open Library>New and create a new library on your other hard drive. Then copy all events and projects to that new Library. This will move them to the other hard drive. You can then close the library on your boot drive. Quit iMovie and delete that library and in future only use the one on the other drive.

  • How do I back up file on external Portable Hard drive

I recently dropped my laptop on the floor doing damage to the screen. I took it to Apple store and they were able to back my hard drive onto an external hard drive. It has been a couple weeks since then and I would like to update all the files since the last back up. Does anyone know how to do this.

    Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    10. MimMac (Shareware)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • How do you get Windows 7 to recognise AE Hard drive?

I have an AirPort Extreme with an external hard drive in HFS+ format. I can access it fine on My MacBook Pro, but Windows doesn't recognise it.
I don't know how to use Windows 7, can anyone tell me how to get the hard drive recognised on it?
    Thank you =)

    yes, worked fine under WinXP.
now i am able to access the TC using the AirPort Utility app, that's some progress.
but still unable to map to it with File Explorer (had it mapped as Z when running WinXP)
this is my first time with Win7 ... here's what i'm doing to map
    open file explorer
    select map network drive
    drive = "z"
    folder = "\\<NAME OF TC>
    select 'connect using different credentials'
    select Use Another Account
it then prompts for User Name and Password
... i input the TC name for User Name and the password ... error message that windows cannot access the device
i had not problems setting it up in winxp, but that was a long time ago and it was all saved in local memory, i'm sure i'm missing something obvious, but can't see where i'm going wrong
    thanks!

  • HT5664 how do you copy the iPhoto library to the hard drive

I copied some photos onto a DVD and my new iMac won't let me download them into iPhoto.  I don't understand the instructions to download the iPhoto library into the hard drive.  How do I do that?  What do I do once that part is downloaded?

    1. Drag it.
    2. If you're moving loose files, open iPhoto and import or drag them into it. If you're moving an iPhoto library, double-click it.

  • How do you find the right replacement for a hard drive

i have a 2007 macbook and the hard drive just went out and i want to find a new one that would be combatible

    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
Or OWC for regular hard drives and SSDs  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
After you put in your new hard disk put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen
