How do you choose what app ichat opens for a url?

I'm having a problem with ichat.  Every time I click on a link that has been sent to me, a url, it opens up a program called "Best Notes."  This is not a browser.  I want it to open up by default to Safari.  Any suggestions?

Open Safari and set it as the default web browser in its preferences.

  • Parental Controls - How do I find what apps are starting for an account?

I turned on Parental Controls for my kids and when they log into their accounts they get a series of dialogs saying "You don't have permission to run <APP>, with Done, Always Allow and Allow Once buttons. Things like GoogleUpdater. None of these apps are in their startup list in System Preferences. How can I find what apps are set to startup for each account?

Here's a tip from another user that may help you:
"I was running into the same problem trying to find apps for my daughters Iphone 3g running 4.2.1.  What I did was go to the Itunes store through Itunes on my PC, and then went to the bottom of the main page and clicked "Browse." On the browse page I selected, App Store, Games (category), Kids (subcategory), and then a list of apps appears below.
I sorted by date (oldest to newest) by right-clicking next to "price" and choosing "release date" on the menu that pops up. The date created field will then be showing, which you can click on to sort newest to oldest or oldest to newest.  I downloaded a bunch of free apps starting from the oldest (by name - you don't have much else to go on).  Of the 30 or so I added to my Itunes, about 27 of them were compatible with 4.2.1.
This is defintely not a perfect way of finding apps, but after spending a lot of time searching for a better way this was the best I could come up with."

  • How can you tell what app is using a file?

I have a screenshot that I moved to the trash. I try to empty the trash, but it says the file is in use. Is there any way to tell what app is using it?
    Thanks very much.

There is a shell command (i.e. Unix executable) called fuser.
This program displays a list containing all the process-ids (PIDs) that are accessing a particular file at a given time.
To invoke it you just need to open a terminal window, wait for the command prompt (typically a "$"), then type fuser followed by a space and then drag the file from the finder to said terminal window.
Once the PID list is displayed, you need to look-up the process id (the first column) with the help of activitty monitor to see the name of the app that's accessing the file.
One final warning: make sure activity monitor is displaying "all processes" because the file is not necessarily being accessed by one of your processes.

  • How do you find what files are open?

I have a disk utility that needs to unmount my secondary drive but it is unable to stating there are open files. I know there is a UNIX command that shows what files are open but I can't find the command. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
The command you are after is lsof. Read the manual to find out about the options (there are an awful lot, but most of them you won't need).

  • How do you choose what opens at start up!

I don't know what my son did, but skype, imovie, messenger and iphoto all open when I turn my computer on. How do I shut it off. I know it is something simple. I just don'w know what it is?

    Hi Debbi,
I don't know what my son did...
I suspect the "how" is this: If you click and hold a dock icon, one of the options is "Open at Log-in." It's a shortcut to make it easier to set a startup item. Apparently so easy a child can do it
Remember that kids tend to figure out more than we think. We got our first Mac about 1990 when our son was four, and told him to have us or his sisters start a program for him (no docks back then). Within a few days, I'd find him using the computer when Mom and sisters were out shopping. He proudly announced he'd figured it out! His favorite way to court disaster was to drag everything to the Trash (the old Mac OS had the trash icon always visible on the desktop). I had to drop a tiny locked file in every folder to prevent accidental deletion until that stage passed.
    Merry Christmas!

  • How do you choose what account to send an iMessage from?

I have one account set up on iMessage, but it can accept messages sent to my phone number, email address, plus email aliases.
I want to retain this ability to receive messages on several accounts but I also want to force the system to send messages from my phone number, especially when using Share buttons elsewhere in the operating system.
My default account to send messages from IS my phone number, but every time that I send a file from somewhere else in the OS it sends from my email, so I'm not sure what's going on here.
Does anyone know a fix? Thank you

    HI,
I understood from the first post but was not in a position to actually test it at the time
I went to my Contacts App > My Card and removed the iPhone number.
It syncs via iCloud to the iPhone.
I went to the iMessages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages account and changed the bottom drop down to read "Start From" my iPhone Number.
In iPhoto I highlighted a Pic and then chose the Share Menu > Messages and typed in the iPhone Number.
This meant it should have appeared on the iPhone as a Stand alone iMessages "from Itself" effectively.
However it listed another Address Card that did not have the iPhone Number on it. (only the Apple ID in Use)
As you say, the Share option seems to override the Send From option in Messages itself.
One way it can be done is to disable the Apple ID in the Receive At list which then leaves only the iPhone Number.
This will send by the iPhone number.

  • How do you choose what music goes onto your iPhone?

My iPhone has finally hit capacity, mostly with music.  I don't want to delete things from my library, because my comptuer has plenty of space, but I want to limit what gets sync'd to my iphone.  I.E. There is old music that I don't listen to regularly anymore that I don't want on my iPhone, but I would still like to keep.
I know one option would be to create a playlist and just sync that playlist, but I don't want to have to drag new stuff into a playlist every time (Because I know I will forget.)
Does anyone have any suggestions?  I already have "Convert to 128kbps AAC" selected.

    kevinfromfontana wrote:
I wish there was an option to sync all music EXCEPT what is in a certain playlist.
    Piece o' cake...
Create a regular playlist and name it something like Not on iPhone.
Add songs to it you do not want to sync.
Create a smart playlist named something like Sync to iPhone.
    Match all rules;
    Playlist is Music
Playlist is not Not on iPhone.
    Like this...
Select the iPhone in iTunes and click the Music tab.
Tick Sync music and tick Sync selected playlists, Artists Albums and Genre.
Tick the Sync to iPhone playlist and click OK.
If you want to change what is on the iPhone, simply add/remove items from the Not on iPhone playlist then plug in the iPhone.

  • How do you choose what the stabilizer tracks?

    Hi,
I'm loving the Warp-Stabilizer feature but sometimes it acts a little weird.
My main problem is that it favors the foreground which is usually my subject. So when they shift their weight, bob their head, the stabilizer follows that movement rather than tracking to the background.
Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for working around this? Ideally I would like to pick several points in the background and use them to stabilize the image.
    Thank you,
    Dale

After Effects manages that with more user select options and  better than PPro Warp Stabiliser.

  • How do you know what HDD to get for MacBook?

    Hi,
I've read loads of posts but am really a average Mac user and don't know much about memory/hard drives or any hardware to be honest.
I have a MacBook which I bought in January 2009. It's a 13 inch aluminium one so I think that makes it the late 2008 model as that's all I can find when I'm searching. I bought the 160GB model which I think was a 2 ram.
I now have about 95GB free but software takes ages to load sometimes the icon bounces for a while, software also freezes or lags too.
Does this mean if I get a bigger hard drive these problems will go? I've had it just nearly 3 years and really don't want to buy another one as they're expensive. I took it in to apple and they did a complete refresh or something so it was like new but still after I put all my work back on the memory went down again and problems came back.
I have no idea how to change the hard drive although I can see it when I open the battery cover.
Could anyone help me pick one I just want the most storage I found this link but am confused on which one to pick or if they're any good: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=1657&catid=1660&subid=1667
Do I then have to get RAM too? How do I know it will work and not ruin my laptop?
Don't I have to put the OS back on? I bought the upgrade through the app store as It came with leopard and I got the disk update for snow leopard so which disk do I use?
Also where does my work go, should I move it all onto a USB first then move it to the new one?
I'm sorry I just really can't deal with it slowing down as I have a lot of things open as I'm doing my dissertation, but also don't want to risk losing all my files at this stage as it's my last year at university and don't want to lose any work or files/ software like word etc.
I do use time machine has I bought an external to try get rid of the problem but when I connect the external one in using USB my mac starts to slow down and freeze up anyway.
Sorry if this is a lot and if it's already been asked but I'm just so confused, I asked the apple store if they can do it but they said they can't and to look online and google around.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If that's not a typo and you really do have 95GB free on your 160GB hard disk, it is unlikely that a larger hard drive will noticeably speed up your system. If it was a typo, and you have only 95MB free, then yes, you are extremely short of hard disk space, and a larger hard drive would absolutely help.
Here's a step by step video that shows the process: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcMtKfDIKHY
You need a small phillips screwdriver and a Torx T6 to accomplish the task. Since your old drive still works, you should probably purchase an external USB enclosure for it, and use it to transfer data from your old drive to your new drive before installation. Then you'll have the old drive as an additional external drive for backup or 'testing' OS upgrades.  I use mine to download and install the latest OS X upgrades before installing them on my 'working' machine.
Apple MacBook internal hard drives are usually 5400 rpm. A 7200 rpm drive will give you a slight performance boost, without significantly reducing battery life or increasing noise or heat. Recent floods in Thailand have shut down major hard disk manufacturers and have significantly increased hard drive prices, so if you still have 95GB free, you should wait until prices stabilize in a few months. If you DO need to purchase a drive, a 500GB model is likely to meet your storage needs for a long time. Internal Macbook hard drives need to be 2.5" SATA, and a maximum of 9.5mm in height.  From the vendor you linked to, these drives are listed:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=1657&catid=1660&subid=1667
I haven't tried hybrid or SSD drives, so I won't comment on either of them.
A RAM memory upgrade would be my first recommendation.
Snow Leopard runs quite well on 4GB RAM. Your MacBook unibody (the aluminum one) can use 2GB, or 4GB, RAM modules, up to a total of 8GB. Details here: http://blog.macsales.com/9102-secret-firmware-lets-late-08-macbooks-use-8gb.
It is likely that you currently have two 1GB RAM modules inserted, so purchasing a set of two 2GB modules or two 4GB modules is the best solution. If you intend to upgrade to OS X Lion 10.7 eventually, I'd purchase the 2x4GB=8GB RAM upgrade now, rather than just 4GB. I've purchased several hard disk and RAM upgrades for family Macs from OtherWorldComputing, www.macsales.com. I'm not sure that www.macsales.com sells in the UK.
Macs are finicky about RAM, and you should be certain before purchase that your Apple reseller GUARANTEES it will work reliably or let you return it and get a refund. Even 'name brand' RAM that seemingly meets all the specs is not always reliable.
I'll also mention my experience with the performance of Snow Leopard.  I'm still using Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.7 for performance reasons.
I have a mid-2007 MacBook with 4GB (3GB RAM is the maximum usable on my particular system) RAM and a 500GB 7200 RPM hard drive.
When I updated to 10.6.8 on my 'temporary' drive, I found that Safari browsing was significantly slower with LOTS of beachballs, and overall system performance seemed noticeably slower, so after a week (given time for indexes to update and so on) or so I reinstalled from the Snow Leopard CD (10.6.3) and downloaded the Combo Update to 10.6.7, instead of automatically updating all the way to 10.6.8.
    Hope that helps!
Finally, I'm shocked that an Apple Store would not be more helpful!
