How do you clean a Super Drive?

I upgraded my daughter's Mac Mini 1.66 Intel from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Now she says it tends to eject DVDs. I just ran a test and it played a CD fine. It took two tries for it to read the Leopard install DVD which I tried next. Then I put in a movie and it also played on the second try. I guess we have either a failing drive or the laser that reads the disks is dirty.
What do you use to clean the Super Drive? I might as well clean all of the computer DVDs at home.

After 4 years of pretty intense use my drive stopped burning DVDs but would still burn CDs and play DVDs. I kept getting the same media sense error. I tried cleaning the lens by shooting some compressed air in the slot, running a "cleaner" disc (with the brushes on it), and inserting a slim plastic card covered with a microfiber cloth. None of that worked. So I finally resorted to opening up my MacBook Pro, taking out the drive, and opening it up. All along the way I was blasting with compressed air to remove any dust or hairs I saw. I used a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently wipe the lens and another (unidentified) part that had some dust that wouldn't blow off. I put it all back together and it now burns DVDs again without errors. I am elated that I didn't have to buy a replacement optical drive. If you want to go this route I recommend following the instructions on ifixit.com. They'll show you how to get inside your laptop.

Unless this is a huge application then you may be running your computer with marginal hard drive space already which is dangerous.

  • How do you know a hard drive is bad?

how do you know a hard drive is bad?

From the OS X "Help" system:
Check whether a disk is about to fail
You can check the health of many disks in Disk Utility. Many disks include Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T) hardware, which lets a disk test itself for potential problems.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk in the list at the left.
If you see a message saying the disk has a fatal hardware error, the disk has an irreparable hardware problem that can’t be fixed by Disk Utility or any other utility that repairs software problems. Back up as much of the data on the disk as possible, and then replace the disk.
If you don’t see a message saying the disk has a hardware error but you still have problems with the disk, you can try to repair it with Disk Utility.

Kappy Thanks for help..  I had already tried the Disk Utility but external drive did not show.  What worked was to shut down every thing and shut off power to all.  Disconnect power to the external drive.  Connected power to computer and then restarted the computer.  After the computer was up and running, I reconnected power to external drive and then turn it on.  At this point the external drive returned to my desk top

How do you close a thumb drive that does not show in finder?

What do you mean by "Close?"
    Eject??
If so, you could use Go to Computer to find it if it is not in the Sidebar or on the Desktop. Ctrl-click or Right-click on the drive and choose Eject <diskname>
Or, you could set it to show in the SideBar in the Finder Preferences, SideBar tab. Then, it would have an eject icon next to it in the Sidebar.

How do you clean install CS6 on a new PC Win7 64bit system?
I think I've upgraded all th way from Version 7.

There is no problem. If no previous, activated software is detected on the system, the upgrade installer will simply revert to its secondary mode and request to input the old serial in a second step for verification. Unless you do some exotic crossgrade/ sidegrade stuff, this should work with no problems whatsoever.

how do you clean mac from virus displaying ads?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

How do you clean the leather iPad cover?

I've used my leather iPad cover (black) on three different iPads now - the iPad 2, the iPad 3 and the iPad 4 - over a period of more than two years.  I've never found the need to clean the cover.  If I were to do that, I would probably use a clean microfiber cloth much like the one I would use to clean the iPad's screen.

  • How do you clean up AURORA$ORB$UNAUTHENTICATED in v$session

In 817 when creating a named session using the Enterprise Java Bean API and attempting to authenticate with an invalid password the result is an additional AURORA$ORB$UNAUTHENTICATED username entry in the v$session table. Eventually, as the number of these entries increases, these failures inhibit valid authentications.
How do you clean up these failed authentications?

The best thing you can do is recognize that some client requests cannot be reasonably honored. You're on the right track to keep the answer 'No!' a possibility. 500kb is way too large for a web page.
The cure for this scenario is tinkering with CSS/HTML. Personally, I would use a repeating pattern of synthetic grass with no yard lines. That can get you down to around 20kb. Then I would overlay a PNG8 file with alpha transparency* to render the yard lines. That could be only 100kb. These images can be layered as your background through HTML/CSS.
*Photoshop cannot create PNG8 with alpha transparency. You'd need to make this with Fireworks or use this hack.

Drink the Irish, and as for the cleaning Vodka, buy the absolute cheapest one in the store, the one you wouldn't want to drink.
They all meet FDA standards for human consumption unlike alcohol in the drug store.

  • How Do You Test a Flash Drive for Errors Using OS X?

HI. In Windows there are Flash Drive tester that tests if there's something wrong with the Flash drive's chips. How do you test a flash drive for errors on OS X? I bought the HP v220w which is tiny for a 16GB and it's metal. The whole thing goes into the plug. Design wise, it is great, it's very elegant like a jewelry. Thanks in advance.
    Gbu.

Format it for OS X and run a surface scan on the partition. That should show any hardware problems that don't keep it from working altogether.
