How do you close a finder window on an iMac running Mountain Lion by double clicking on the top of the window like I can on my Macbook Air?

When I bought my Macbook Air in 2011, ( leopard on purchase - now mountain lion) I discovered how to close open Finder windows by double clicking at the top of the window. I have just bought an iMac (mountain lion) and for the life of me cant find out how to do the same. Finder preferences are no help. Can anyone out there be of some?

I know what you are referring to. In both cases, the window is minimized, but on your MacBook Air, your Finder window is minimized onto the Finder icon, and on the iMac, on the right side of the Dock.
To change this on your iMac, open System Preferences > Dock, and mark "Minimize windows into application icon"

I am a computer tech working for a computer company. We have an iMac here in the store which a customer needs restored to factory defaults.
I have tried the following:
     - Using 'command + r' to format and reinstall mountain lion (it is requesting an apple id that has purchased the mountain lion OS)
     - Using 'option' on boot up, same seneraio
Is their any other way to perform some kind of equavilent procedure that would ready a iMac for re-selling?
It's almost as though I need to purchase a copy of the operating system that has already come preinstalled on this system.
Im not a mac savy user, maybe it's something simple i am missing. Any help with this would be greatly appreiated! Thanks in advance!

You must have the account credentials for the account that was used to purchase Mountain Lion (this iMac was upgraded) presumably the customer.

Boot the iMac, go to Apple>About This Mac>System Report, post the model identifier here (under hardware, 2nd line down)

I have a perfectly-working LW 4/600 with exactly the same issue. They use localtalk - a long obsolete network connection, that doesn't connect to modern networks, and appletalk as the comm protocol.
I think the only choice you have is to use an old powerPC Mac as print server. You tell me which old Mac you have, with a localtalk connector, or that runs OS X 10.4 or earlier (so it speaks appletalk), and I'll tell you how I've done it for the past 11 years or so.
Right now I use a G4 running 10.4.11, plus an etherMac ethernet to localtalk adapter.
Before, I used a PMac 6100 running LPD server software.

Humor me. When you perform copy, do you then establish keyboard focus by clicking the mouse pointer on the destination screen for the paste action -- before keying the paste?
Have you installed any third-party keystroke mapping software that may be getting between the operating system and these two applications?
Under System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard, have you enabled Sticky, Slow, or EEK! Keys?

How do you close an information window when you can't see the close button?

One of my Macs is a trusty old G3 iMac and since version 8 I've had a problem with the information window you get for podcasts when you click on the 'i' button. The window goes to the full screen height, in fact it goes beyond because you can't see the top and button. Therefore I can't close it with the mouse or move it.
I also can't find a keyboard shortcut that will close this window, so I have to exit iTunes and re-start, which on this machine is a slow process.
Anyone help welcome - is there a keyboard shortcut?

...that's the sound of me hitting my head on the keyboard. I never knew about Command-W because, you know, it's only a menu option IN ALL THE APPLICATIONS I JUST LOOKED AT!
Oh well...you learn something every day...and I would like to point out that if you use OSX Leopard's help system and search for "keyboard shortcuts", Command-W isn't mentioned.

How do you PRINT a Finder window list view?

I think a long time ago in OS9, we can open a new (Finder) Window, switch to 'List' view and print the window, so that we can see all the nested folders, etc.
Can we/How do we do this in OS X? Can't seem to find a Print command...

Those who have not experienced the problem will tell you to double tap the home button. I have had the same problem where holding the home button won't bring up Siri and double tapping or single tapping the home button won't close, quit or do anything to the currently running app. I'm sure with enough oft cheese questions an update will be put out.

If you ever need to repair or reformat your hard drive you need one!

If you still have - or can download - the Lion Installer app from the Mac App Store, you'll find an app titled "Install Mac OS Mountain Lion.app" in your Applications folder. If it's not there, and you've already purchased it, just go to the MAS, look under your Purchases tab and download it from there. If you haven't already purchased it, you'll need to do so using your Apple ID.
Once you have the installation app, get a 8GB+ USB flash drive and download DiskMaker X - just plug in the flash drive, start up DiskMaker X and follow the instructions. You'll now have a bootable installation disk.

How to search files on a windows configured external hard disk on macbook air

I am trying to search files on my passport Ultra Western Digital, which is configured for windows and has read only permissions for my macbook air, i am unable to instant search results through finder or spotlight. Is there a way to search them?

Well, to clarify:
I want to find all user text files and mail messages on a Time Machine backup disk that contain the word "escalator".
By user files I mean those in
/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/<username>iMac/*/Macintosh HD/Users
and subdirectories thereof.
I was trying to use the find command, but it was taking a very long time, so I aborted it. I then realized that most of the files have many hard links, and therefore will be searched many times. That, of course, is a great waste.
Is there some way to search each file only once?

This is the procedure for syncing music to the iPad.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Music Tab on the right.
Click on all of the albums or playlists that you want to sync - or the entire library if you like.
Click on the Sync Music Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
iCloud does not transfer the music on the Mac to the iPad unless you download it again on the iPad. iTunes Match may be what you are thinking of and you have to subscribe to that feature for a fee.
You have to sync the music that is already in your iTunes library to the iPad using iTunes. You can turn on Automatic Downloads on both devices for music and when you download music on one device it will download to the other device.
I get the feeling that you have never synced the iPad with iTunes before but you already have content on the iOad and are getting a message that the iPad will be erased if you sync with iTunes. If that is true, you need to transfer all iPad content into iTunes before you sync. This will help you with that.

My Fantom backup drive is failing. I want to copy the time machine contents to a new backup drive and continue on as if nothing has happened. Can I do this and if so how? I have intel iMac running Mountain Lion. Fantom Drive via Firewire 800.

My Fantom backup drive is failing and I have to send it in for warranty repair. Before I do that I want to copy the time machine contents to a new drive and then use it for the backup, continuing on as if nothing had gone wrong with the first drive. Can I do this? Is it as simple as duplicating the first drive and replacing it with the second? New drive arrives Tuesday PM and both drives have dual firewire 800 ports.

I have used the Disk Utility to verify the contents of the backup drive so I don't think I have any corrupt files. The drive just takes a minute or so to spin up to speed. If I turn it off and then back on, it beeps at me for a few seconds and then starts it's slow process of trying to spin. I think it's a power problem not a data problem. I have my fingers crossed that it holds on until Tuesday PM when the new drive arrives. I'm thinking that my two options are to duplicate the bad drive or partition the new drive and put the old backups on one partition and start afresh on the second partition. Any input?
