How do you compress . . . losslessly?

Hi,
I should know how to do this, but I can't! We make 4 minute programs. We now shoot on Panasonic P2 cards with the HVX200 - mostly in HD. Edits perfectly in Final Cut Pro 7. All works great, overcranking, etc.
So we'd like to give our client a Master in pretty much lossless format as a QT movie. We export the program from FCPro as a Self Contained movie - the HD format is using about 60mbs data rate, our older Standard Definition (shot on Mini DV) exports as SC movies at about 30 mbs. Everything works well and is fine, and the QT exported movies will play fine - so long as the computer has FCPro loaded on it (which means it has already put the DVCPro Codec in the QT folder). If you try to play a self contained exported movie from FCPro - on a Mac that doesn't have FCPro - the movie won't play. Nor can any PC play it (I don't think.) (Because they won't have the DVCPro codec loaded in the QT folder)
So all we want to do is put the SC movie into Compressor (the older, standard definition shows), compress it so I'll end up with a QT movie that everybody (all our clients) can play. I'm not looking to actually "compress" the movie to make it smaller - I just want it "playable" in all computers with QT. So When I compress in Compressor, say, an older DV program, I'll choose 30,000kbps as the rate with full size export, no frames control (as I'm not changing the size or frame rate) -- and here's where the weirdness begins. When Compressor is finished with a 4 minute movie- it plays fine - but NOT at 30 mbs. It fluctuates, but usually plays about 14 mbs or thereabouts! But WHY? I put in 30mbs - but that's not what Compressor does!
To make matters worse - if I compress only a 10 second "test" clip - set it at 30mbs - it'll compress that at about 24 mbs . . . better than 14, but still is ignoring what I tell it. We use one pass (it's faster, and I figure I don't need VBR at these high data rates - could be wrong here. Using h.264 of course. When I compress the HD footage, things seem to work. I can choose 40 mbs, and that's what ompressor does - but with the miniDV Masters - it won't recompress it at 30mbs? I'm also noticing even though I tell Compressor to export at Full Size (720x480) my exported tests are at 655x480?? ***???
Why won't Compressor listen to me!! Grrrrr . . .
Can any of you gurus out there help? I'm simply trying to compress our Self contained exported Masters to QT - not so much to make the files smaller - rather to get them OUT of the DVCPro codecs so they'll play on a computer without FCPro loaded on it.
Wait a minute - I might be getting slightly confused - with the Standard Definition movies shot on MiniDV - perhaps THOSE SC movies can be played by any any machine with QT?
Thanks for any input here!
Larry

Hi Larry,
the Apple ProRes codecs will give you the lossless thing that you wanted.
As you are working with P2 material you can use the Log & Transfer function in FCP to ingest your clips and transcode them into ProRes.
L&T has a setup for ingesting from P2 where you can decide how to transcode your material into: Apple ProRes codec is one of the choice.
You can choose Apple ProRes 422, which will give you good results, keeping the 4:2:2 color space of your source material.
In this way you will be working in a ProRes timeline.
Then you don't need to do any downscaling to SD, just export a self contained QuickTime movie with current settings (no recompressing) and you will get an Apple ProRes encoded QT movie, playable on both Macs and PCs having the QT player installed.
Here you can find more details about these codecs and different professional workflows, including working with P2:

Armando.

I don't believe .tifs are a web compatible format. Two options:
    1. You either have to compress it, where it becomes a .sit  or .zip file that is emailable. Your receiver will need to be able to decompress the file.
    2. Change it to a .jpg or .png file which are emailable.
Like Mr. Perkins says your ISP may limit the size of files that can be emailed.
I don't see where web compatibility relates to this issue in any way.
I'd be shocked if any computer whatever is unable to decompress a zip file.  However, as Mr. Perkins and I have confirmed via testing, the amount of compression can range from negligible to significant, depending on the original TIF file.
As far as changing to JPG or PNG, I don't know if that helps the OP.  The question was specifically related to TIFs.  Personally, I still prefer the MobileMe or Dropbox solution.  The recipient receives exactly what the sender wishes to send and email is not clogged up in any manner.

how do you compress files and folders?

Simply right-click and select "Compress," or navigate in Terminal to the directory containing the file(s) you wish to zip and use the "zip" (no quotes) command. From the terminal you can also use -e to encrypt your archive.

  • How can you compress? And WHAT THE HECK IS IT

What does compress do? and how do you do it?

Compressing songs is exactly what it sounds like...making the song file smaller.
To do this, go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Importing. Change your settings to what you want (Apple says an average song is AAC at 128kbps encoding). The higher the bit rate, the better quality of the music. However, this dramatically increases the size of the files, so be careful.
So let's say you decide on AAC at 128kbps (what I suggest). Select a song (or multiple), and then go to Advanced>Convert Selection to AAC. Then you will have a duplicate copy in the Library. Go select one of the copies, right click it, go to Get Info, and see what type of file it is. If it is the old file format, you can remove it from the library. Be sure to keep the new one.
Post back if you need more details/instruction!
    I hope this helps!

  • How do you 'compress' MIDI velocities?

I can't find this anywhere. I assume Logic can do it. I don't mean the transform/velocity limiter in the functions menu; that's something different. Let's say I've got a region with max. velocity 100 and min. velocity 50. I want to change all the velocities so that (in this example) anything near 75 is left more or less as it is and anything near 50 or 100 is given a higher or lower velocity as appropriate.

If forums like this are only going to be used for solving technical problems, aren't they largely pointless?
Yes, I agree, it's obviously better when people can use a place like this to learn to do things better with the software as well as look for troubleshooting help. Totally.
But I've been noticing your posts here and it just reminds me a lot of the attitude I had back when I felt like I was forced to learn DP.. I just saw everything in terms of 'well, in Logic I do x,y and z.. surely there's a way to do the same thing in this st*pid fr*kkin program'.. etc etc.. Up to a point, the comparative approach is useful to get you going, but at the end of the day, putting the time in to study all the boring technical manuals pays off far better than cherry picking for tip after tip. Nobody likes reading manuals.. ok I know one guy who seems to love it but he's quite a particular case, and he's something of a Logic rain man as a result. But in my experience, it's an unavoidable part of getting your skills up to speed. Even if you get serious one-on-one training with a Logic expert, it's still important IMO to absorb the manual over time because you need to pick up the terminology and structure of the program just as much as you need to pick up actual practical technique.
Like I said earlier, once you demystify the terminology and 'philosophy' behind how the program works, you're in a much better place to learn (and retain) things much more quickly and effectively, not to mention having a much better idea of where to look for any given function you may need at some time. With me and ProTools, I remember how lost I felt at first when I had no idea where things were in terms of how the menus were categorized etc. But once I put in some hard, boring yards doing actual tedious study.. it all started to make sense, I knew where stuff was and had a much better overall feeling for how it was organized. From that point on, every time I bothered a ProTools expert friend on ichat asking how you do things, my questions became far more pointed.. he could tell I was no longer stabbing in the dark trying to cludge my way around like a lost Logic user in a ProTools world - he noticed I'd put in the effort and the exchange has been more fruitful ever since. The guy in question, btw, is a producer who works on some of the biggest names in pop music so it was a big priority for me to not strain the friendship by irritating him with noob questions when he knows that I should know better!
In my case, doing some hard work and study at my end (you can find the time to do it even if you are busy) really paid off. Since then my PT expert friend is more than happy to share his expertise with me because he can tell I've done my jedi training, so the spoon-feeding is over.

  • How do you compress into FLV format?

Is there a plug-in for Compressor or do I need to use Episode or Flash 8 Professional? If I need to use another program, which produces the highest quality and smallest files?

    flv, great touble.
Let me start by saying if you need real quality there is only one opcion.
On's 2 VP6 exporter for quicktime, no more options really.
On 2 is the company that develops the codes that Adobe uses flash 87 and above, there are many "options" to generate flvs, but no one can give you total control over the code (guess because of feedbacks).
Adobe Flash 8 and 9, can encode any Qucktime movie to flv with alpha chanel BUT can't do double pass mmmm.... and if you select 700kps as top bit rate, be prepared to get a file with at least 1100 kps, can consider this, serously!
Episode Pro, very expensive, can do double pass, sometimes it dosent respect the limit bitrate, BUT guess what..... can enconde alphan chanel........ come on!
Sorenson Squezze, slow as ****, produce noise in image, deforms the button of the image, most times files encoded with sorenson cant be open with quicktime+perian to test quality. crash all the time....
Other options that does flv can only ofer the old sorenson spraks codec, used in the times of flash 6 and 7, awfull quality.
So, sadly the only real option is to buy, vp6 exporter, can work with compressor and quicktime, also it exports in the formats, flv and swf.....
Why the world had to chosse flv?.....mmmmm

  • How do you purge/compress/shrink the iPhoto11 folder/file size?

How do you purge/compress/shrink the iPhoto11 folder/file size?
I have been using iPhoto since iLife'05 and have always upgraded with each iteration of iLife. Without exception, I had just recently upgraded to iPhoto'11 when iLife'11 came out. Because I have used iPhoto to store all my photos and videos taken over the last 5 years or so, my iPhoto folder/file has become bigger and bigger over time and so I moved it to an external hard-drive. My main iPhoto'11 folder/file has 14,367 photos, 995 videos and is indicated to be 83 GB by iPhoto'11. But "Get Info" in Finder reports a whopping 130 GB.
I started to think that this is getting a little crazy and I had wanted to better manage my photo collection, so I decided to "divide and conquer" this gigantic iPhoto'11 folder/file into several smaller, more manageable sized ones. So I made a duplicate copy of this gigantic iPhoto'11 folder/file onto another external hard-drive, fire-up iPhoto'11 again to delete away almost 80% of the photos and 90% of the videos. Now, my "slimmed-down" iPhoto folder/file has 3,000 photos, 75 videos and is indicated to be 6.8 GB by iPhoto'11. But despite the new "slimmed-down" status, the "Get Info" in Finder reports a still very huge 44 GB. Where did all those bulk come from? I have emptied both the iPhoto'11 Trash Can and Mac OS X Trash Can and these steps did not seemed to change anything at all.
Therefore, I wanted to see what the "Get Info" in Finder will report if I were to delete 99.99% of the photos and video to leave just one (1) photo in iPhoto'11? Guess what is the result? My "One Photo experimental" iPhoto folder/file has 1 photo, 0 videos and is indicated to be 2 MB by iPhoto'11 yet the "Get Info" in Finder reports a mysterious 36.3 GB. There must be something hiding inside!
    Help! What can I do?

I went on to try trashing away some of the folders and files inside and found that I could actually do it quite neatly if I go by the year which the photos are taken. After a lot of trial and error working on duplicate copy of my iPhoto '11 library, I am able to do away with all the clutter within the library and still open it normally.
Now my 44GB obese iPhoto'11 library has been slimmed down to just a little over 7 GB (5 GB as reported by iPhoto'11) and I am just comfortable dealing with 2 GB of "don't-know-what-info" of clutter within the library.
Remember my "One Photo Experimental" iPhoto'11 library that was 36.3 GB? I managed to bring it down to the realistic 22 MB size. This size is still double that of a brand new iPhoto'11 library I created to import 1 photo. However, it sure beat having 36.3 GB of clutter.
So, now what I am gonna do is to "divide and conquer" the duplicate copies of my iPhoto'11 library into smaller sized ones according to their year. But I think I'll still keep the original bloated, gigantic 130 GB intact and continue to feed it with photos and videos until maybe it becomes 1 TB! Yikes!
Anyway, million thanks for your tip and I really appreciate it! Have a Happy holidays!

    Hello,
Yes, add such effects using the insert slots on the track strip.
Click on the slot, choose your plugin from the list. Double click to bring up its control window to set parameters.

  • Does Compressor 4 tell you how long the compression actually took?

I'm new to Compressor and compression in general.
When I "Submit" a video for compression in Compressor 4, it creates an entry in the History window that shows you when the video was submitted for compression.  It also gives an estimated time for completion while the video is being compressed (though it seems to me it fluctuates and can be wildly inaccurate).
I usually leave the computer while the compression is happening.  If it's done when I come back, I don't know how long the compression actually took.  I don't see anything in the entry in the History window that tells me that.  Is there any way to know when exactly the compression completed, or how long it took?
    Thanks

Hi Jd, if you have SUBMITTED a job to a cluster (maintained by Qmaster) [not this computer], the transcode job pushed to Qmaster by compressor.app draws events and conditions in the various log in Qmaster. You can find these logs in your ~/library/application support/apple qmaster/logs for the cluster , theater vice  controller, the transcoder daemons and job controller. These contain the start , end and I believe ELAPSED times for each job . It doesn't accumulate by a BATCH .. I will stand corrected though.
Simply browse these logs this with console.app. U can ofcourse "go troppo" and write some shell, perl or apple script to develop some system management facility records for your clients accounting by doing this... Just parsing the text records...
Anyway I recall, his info u want for JOB COMPLETION (elapsed time) is there despite its coarse data. Sadly I have not found a way to detail the CPU, storage and I/o .. Seems too much to do for my needs.
As u state, the SHARE MONITOR.app is for viewing dynamic job. It's a bit hit and miss when using over a cluster. Since mountain lion, it seems to jam up a,lots and magically ,come back to Liffey after many internal messages (see logs) that it failed on socket x n y ..... Sounds like its in need of some stability and robustness additions.
I've also found for very long and numerous multipass segmented transcodes that share monitor gets over whelmed.... Especially when the share monitor.app UI is utilised to "Expand all"... It gets super busy collecting traffic from Qmaster ..if u are using a cluster.

  • How can you get your iPhone videos to compress to one video instead of 5 different frames?

How can you get your iPhone videos to compree to one video instead of different frames

It sounds like you to 5 separate videos. If you start recording, then stop it, then start it again, you will have 2 videos. Not 1. As for splicing them together, you will need a video editing package for your PC. I don't know if Windows Movie Maker (or whatever they're calling it now) can handle this or not. On a Mac, I'd say just use iMovie.

  • How do you combine audio and video files?

I've brought in a video file and an audio file, but can find no way to specify that they are a single source that should be compressed together.  The documentation was of no use.  How do you identify video and audio files as being one source?
    Thanks!

Semantics, I suppose.  In any case, you do need to go through Premiere Pro if you want AME to do the job.  There are likely other encoders out there which can perform the muxing, though, if you'd rather not go through PP.

  • How do you make a 3d octagon in photoshop cs4 extended?

How do you make a 3d octagon in photoshop cs4 extended that you can map artwork to? I've been searched online for a solution that doesn't involve using a 3D program but can't find anything. Can't you extrude a shape like in Illustrator, or exporta true 3D shape from Illustrator that will work? I'd use Illustrator but the mapping thing is finicky, and doesn't alow wrapping images around angles. (now someones going to say: "Don't mention any other programs in a PHotoshop forum!" Yeah yeah, there should be a forum then about using different Adobe programs together.) End of rant, any suggestions much appreciated.

    Thanks for your prompt response!
    Suggested Bridge Update
It turns out that I got a message that this update had already been installed, which led me to more carefully look at the Bridge window and (finally) see that the Output module had a Quality dropdown: Full, 300 ppi, 150 ppi, 96 ppi and 72 ppi.  Thanks!  I decided to compare the CS4/Bridge results to those I got in CS2 with its convenient File/Automate/PDF Presentation/Multi-Page Document routine that I like.
My project was an 8-page PDF made from scanned pages of handwritten notes into which some fairly small type had been insert using the Photoshop CS2 Type tool.  In Photoshop CS2, I had settled on "medium quality" JPEG compression as giving a "reasonable" file size (about 7 MB) and "very good/excellent" image quality.  I experimented with making the PDF in Bridge, using all five Quality levels.  See table below.  The Bridge "good minus" file was about the same size as the file produced in CS2, which I judged to be "very good/excellent" and slightly better visually than the 300-ppi, 23.5-MB Bridge file.
    Bridge Quality:
    Full
    300 ppi
    150 ppi
    96 ppi
    72 ppi
    File Size:
    25.2 MB
    23.5 MB
    7.6 MB
    3.2 MB
    2.1 MB
    Subjective Quality:
    Very good
    Very good
    Good minus
    Poor
    Useless
I appreciate that you may not be all that interested in these observations, but it seems to me that Adobe has done us no favors in the multi-page PDF department in going from CS2 to CS4!
Install the Old Contact Sheet/Picture Package Plug-Ins
I had already done this some time ago, in order to get in CS4 the File/Automate/Contact Sheet II feature I liked in CS2.  It does not appear to me that this plug-in has anything to do with make multi-page PDF's.  Perhaps I'm missing something.
    Again, thanks for your response!
